I just answered this exact question not ten minutes ago. Here it is again if you missed it the first time.

If A can do a job in x time periods, then A can do of the job in 1 time period. Likewise, if B can do the same job in y time periods, then B can do of the job in 1 time period.

So, working together, they can do

of the job in 1 time period.

Therefore, they can do the whole job in:

time periods.

That depends. If the points K, L, and M are collinear and L is between K and M, then the measure of KL plus the measure of LM is equal to the measure of KM. Just set the sum of the first two expressions equal to the third and solve for . If they are in some other order, then it is the two short pieces add up to the long piece. If they are not collinear, you don't have enough information to solve the problem.

This sort of thing is why the instructions for posting tell you to describe your problem completely so that we can understand it.

Divide 7 by 18 on your calculator. You get 0.38888888888888888888888888888889, which really means that it is 0.38 followed by repeated 8s forever. Since writing that many digits is not only impractical but impossible, we have a shorthand notation.

is only approximate (very, very close, but still approximate)

But if you say

which means zero point three followed by an infinity of eights, we now have a manageable and exact representation.

If you have a decimal fraction that has a group of digits that repeat, you run the line over the entire group that repeats. For example:

but we can write:

Again, notice the assertion of exactness.

2(t-1)/6 - 2 = t+2/6
I first multplied both sides by 6/1
and that left me with 2(t-1)-2=t+2
then distributed,
2t-2-2=t+2
then add 4 to both sides
2t=t+6
then subtract t from both sides
t=6

Pick any three negative values that you like for and then substitute each of those values into the function. Use your calculator in each case to determine the value of the function for that input value of . Then, in each case, plot the resulting point represented by the ordered pair consisting of the selected value for and the calculated value of the function.

Repeat the above process for and for three selected positive values for .

Once you have all 7 points plotted, draw a smooth curve through the points.

The graph should appear asymptotic to the -axis.

Your question doesn't make a great deal of sense. How long will it take the boys (emphasis on the plural) to run 1/5 mile -- simple: as long as it takes the slower one to run 1/5 of a mile. If both of the boys are going to run 1/5 of a mile, it doesn't matter how long it takes Ben to go that distance, because the overall elapsed time is going to be paced by Noah.

On the other hand, if you meant that the boys are going to run 1/5 mile in tandem, as in a relay race situation, you didn't bother to share what portion of the distance Ben is going to cover and which portion Noah is going to cover. One possibility is that they will split the distance equally, but nothing in your problem statement would allow such an assumption as being more likely than any other division of the labor.

And please don't write back to tell me "that's all it says in my assignment sheet/book/whatever" I don't care about that. If what you wrote is all the information you have, then you need to go and get more information from your instructor or from further reading in your text.

The first thing to do is draw yourself a sketch. You end up with a right triangle with the line from Karen's house to Dan's house being the hypotenuse and the restaurant at the right angle vertex.

Then there are two ways to go about this. You can do it the easy way in your head if you say the hypotenuse is 10 and if the triangle were a 3-4-5 right triangle, the two legs would be 6 and 8. And since 6 and 8 differ by 2, Karen's house is 8 miles from the restaurant.

Or you can do it the hard way.

Let represent the distance from Karen's house to the restaurant. Then the distance from Dan's house to the restaurant is

Then Pythagoras:

You can take it from here. Toss the extraneous negative root.

Step 1: Determine the slope of the graph of the given equation. You can proceed either of two ways. 1: Solve the equation for in terms of everything else, which is to say, put it into slope-intercept form . Then determine the slope by inspection of the coefficient on . OR 2: Divide the coefficient on by the coefficient on and then take the additive inverse of that fraction.

Step 2: Determine the slope of the desired line which is equal to the slope calculated in step 1 because:

Step 3: Use the point-slope form of an equation of a line to write your desired equation:

where are the coordinates of the given point and is the slope determined in Step 2.

Note that what you asked to be done cannot technically be done. You asked to write the equation of a line. You cannot write the equation of a line because there are an infinite number of representations of any given line. Therefore you can only write an equation of a line.
