This one needs a convenient substitution. Let

Factors:

Hence

and

Factor the sum of two cubes:

So

or

Use the quadratic formula:

Summarizing so far we have three roots: but only one of them is real.

Now all you have left to do is to solve by factoring the difference of two cubes and then applying the quadratic formula to the quadratic factor and taking the real root directly from the linear factor. Sum and Difference of Cubes Discard any complex roots.

12 is 1/2 of what was left before the last step, so just before the last step, 24

24 is 3/2 of what was left before the next to the last step, so 36

36 times 4/3 is 48

and

48 times 5/4 is 60

Something is very wrong with the way you stated your problem. The degree measure of any of the angles of an equilateral triangle is . So how could the degree measures of your three angles be equal to three different expressions? would have to have a different value in each of the expressions. Be that as it may, whether an equilateral triangle has sides that measure 3 Angstroms or 3 light-years, the angles are still exactly , hence knowing the measure of the angles tells you nothing about the measure of the sides.

That would depend on the circumstances under which you determined that M is in fact the midpoint of AB.

Is it a given fact?

Is it a midpoint because the coordinates of M are the average of the corresponding coordinates of A and B?

Were you told that some segment containing M is a bisector of AB?

I can't possibly guess what your figure looks like or what other information you have. So I can't help you, and, given the paucity of information provided, I would wager a goodly sum that no one else can either.

Sorry, the answer cannot be derived from the given information. There is no way to determine the actual shape of the triangle end of your prism. It is certainly not equilateral, but it could be isosceles with legs measuring (which gives a lateral surface area of about 128 sq cm or a total surface area of roughly 143 sq cm) or a right triangle with a short leg of 3 and hypotenuse (which gives a lateral surface area of about 138 sq cm or a total surface area of roughly 153 sq cm), or some other non-standard shape.

Answer 247511 by solver91311(16872) About Me  on 2010-09-21 12:06:29 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Start with either one of your equations.

Step 1. Pick a value for x. It can be anything you like, but 0, 1, or some other small integer usually works well and makes the arithmetic easier.

Step 2. Substitute that value in place of x in your equation. Do the arithmetic and determine the value of y that results.

Step 3. Take the value of x that you selected for step 1 and the value of y that you calculated in step 2 and form an ordered pair (x,y).

Step 4. Plot the ordered pair from Step 3 on your graph. Remember that the x value is the distance right or left along the horizontal axis and the y value is the distance up or down along the vertical axis.

Step 5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 with a different value for x.

Step 6. Draw a line across your graph that passes through the two points that you plotted.

Step 7. Repeat steps 1 through 6 using the other equation.

The point where the lines intersect is the solution, because the coordinates of that point will satisfy (read: make true) both of your equations. You need to determine, by inspection of the graph, what the coordinates of that point are and report your answer as an ordered pair, (x,y), using those coordinates. To check your answer, you should substitute this set of coordinates into each of your original equations and verify that you have a true statement for each of the equations.

If both lines graph to the same line, then the solution set is infinite, i.e. every ordered pair that satisfies one equation will satisfy the other. If the lines are parallel, then the solution set is empty.

A consistent system has at least one solution.

An inconsistent system has no solutions.

An independent system has exactly one solution.

A dependent system has infinitely many solutions.

Therefore a system can be either consistent and independent, consistent and dependent, or inconsistent.
