Let represent the number of video games. Let represent the number of pinball games. Since we want the number of each to be equal:

Since video games cost 3 and pinball costs 2 and we have 30 total:

Substitute in place of (or vice versa if you like) and then solve the single variable equation.

Surface-area/517408: what is the lateral surface area of a cube whose side length is 2.5?

The lateral surface area of a cube is the total surface area, that is the area of all six sides added together less the top and bottom. So the lateral surface area is 4 times the area of one side.

First perform using FOIL: remembering that

Then do

Now you have:

To rationalize the denominator, multiply the whole fraction by 1 in the form of the conjugate of the denominator divided by itself. Remember that if you have a number , then its conjugate is and that the product of two conjugates is the difference of two squares, so

With careful arithmetic you will get an integer denominator that can be divided into each of the resulting coefficients in the numerator. Remember that 8.5 is the same as 17/2.

The multiplicative inverse of a number is a number such that . Clearly, .

So what must you multiply by -1 in order to achieve a result of 1?

By the way, the multiplicative inverse of a number is also referred to as the reciprocal of a number. The process is fairly straight-forward. Turn the number into a fraction (if it is an integer, make it a fraction with a denominator of 1), and then turn the fraction upside down. If you recall when you learned how to divide fractions ("invert and multiply") you were simply being taught that to divide, you multiply by the reciprocal or multiplicative inverse.

The sum of the measures of any two sides of a triangle must be STRICTLY greater than the measure of the third side. But hence no triangle.

Geometry_proofs/517366: GIVEN:
triangle ABC has vertices A(2,1) B(7,4) and C(4,-1)
triangle DEF has vertices D(-3,1) E(0,-4) and F(-5,-1)
PROVE:
triangle ABC is congruent to triangle DEF
(it is a 7 step proof)
I understand that I need to utilize the distance formula to prove corresponding sides congruent, then use the SSS (side side side) postulate to prove the triangles congruent, but I do not understand how to fit this into seven steps. I also don't know whether to use properties of equality or not to justify my equations, but that would make the proof far too long.
-thanks for the help.

Six uses of the distance formula (one for each side of each of the triangles) that is six steps. Then the one step to demonstrate SSS. QED.

It depends. Since you didn't use any parentheses, it is impossible to tell whether you meant:

for which you should have written 7 - (1/6)x = (10/3)x

or

for which you should have written 7 - 1/(6x) = 10/(3x)

The two equations have very different solution sets.

It is something squared then a minus sign and then something squared, like this: . Be careful though, the "something squared" might not necessarily look like something squared. For example: could be the difference of two squares if you let and . So really it is the difference of any two expressions, i.e. expression minus expression, where each of the two expressions can reasonably be considered to be the square of some other expression.

I'm presuming you mean:

(Note: ^ does NOT mean "squared", it means "raised to the power of" the expression following the ^. If you meant as I suspect, then you needed to have written x^2 - 75 = 0)

This is nothing more than the difference of two squares. But 75 is not a perfect square, you complain. Well, yes it is, sort of. It is the perfect square of , right?

So re-write the equation:

Or better yet, recognize that and then write:

Then follow the conjugate factors of the difference of two squares pattern, i.e. , to factor your LHS:

And then just apply the Zero Product Rule.

When you want to find the domain of a function, start with the set of real numbers. Then find any possible values of the independent variable (that is the in most cases, and indeed in this case) that make the function undefined. If the function contains rational expressions (that is, fractions), any value of the independent variable that would make any denominator in the function be equal to zero must be excluded from the domain.

So set each of your denominators equal to zero and solve for the values that must be excluded. The your domain is the set of real numbers excluding those values.
