Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/560477: 3. To estimate animal populations, biologists count the total number of animals in a small section of a habitat. The total population of animals is directly proportional to the size of the habitat (in acres) polled.
a. Write an equation using only one variable that could be used to solve for the constant of variation k.
b. A biologist counted 12 white tail deer in a 100-acre parcel of land in a nature preserve. Find the constant of variation k.
c. If the entire nature preserve is 2,500 acres, then what is the total white tail deer population in the preserve? Describe how you arrived at your answer.

a. (this counts as an equation in one variable because for any given habitat/population scenario, and are constants.)

b. , -- plug the numbers into the formula in part a.

c. -- use the you calculated in part b.

If a rectangle with perimeter has a length that is units longer (or shorter if ) than times the width, ,

Then knowing that the Perimeter is given by:

,

make the substitution:

Then solve for

Impossible to tell. There are infinite answers to this question as posed. You need an additional constraint such as a fixed radius, a fixed height, or perhaps the requirement to minimize the surface area (i.e., make the can as cheaply as possible.)

The line , is a line where ALL of the ordered pairs have a -coordinate equal to 5, in other words a horizontal line. Horizontal lines have a zero slope. Parallel lines have identical slopes, so any line parallel to a horizontal line has to have a zero slope and will have an equation of the form where is the coordinate of ANY point on that line. Since the desired line contains the point , then an equation that represents this line is

a. use the slope formula:

where and are the coordinates of points P and Q.

b. Presuming you mean "what is AN equation of the line containing the segment PQ", use the point-slope form of an equation of a line:

where are the coordinates of either point P or point Q and is the slope calculated in part a.

c. Use the midpoint formulas:

and

where and are the coordinates of points P and Q. Then the midpoint is the point

d. Again, presuming you mean "AN equation": The perpendicular bisector of PQ is the line perpendicular to PQ that passes through the midpoint. The slope of a line perpendicular to a given line is the negative reciprocal of the slope of the given line. Calculate the negative reciprocal of the slope that you calculated in part a, that is calculate . Then use the point-slope form of an equation of a line to derive the desired equation:

where are the coordinates of the midpoint of segment PQ and is the negative reciprocal of the slope calculated in part a.

20 minutes is hour, so, since Distance = Rate * Time, we can say the distance to work is miles.

Then since Time = Distance / Rate, we can say the time to go miles at 40 miles per hour is hours.

But since hours is minutes, you can caculate the number of minutes it will take.

If the measure of either of the two equal measure sides is a whole number, then the sum of the two equal sides must be an even number. Parallel lines have equal slopes. Perpendicular lines have slopes that are negative reciprocals.

For your part a) note that the given point is on the given line. Therefore the desired equation is identical to the given equation.

For your part b) calculate the negative reciprocal of the slope of the given line, then used the point slope form of an equation of a line to derive the desired equation.

where are the coordinates of the given point and is the given/calculated slope.

Rearrange to put the equation into slope-intercept form, that is: .

For your graphs, you already have one point on each of your lines, namely the given point, so plot that point. Select a small integer value for , substitute that value for into one of your equations, calculate the value of that results, create the point from the value you selected for and the value you calculated for , then plot the point. Draw a line through the two points. Repeat for the other equation.
