If you go 24 miles in 2 hours, you are going 12 miles per hour. Since that is downstream, the rate of the boat and the rate of the current are in the same direction, and the two rates add. The other direction, 24 miles in 3 hours is 8 miles per hour, but the current subtracts from the rate of the boat. Altogether you get:

Let the direction of travel for the initial leg of the trip be . Then the direction of travel for the return leg is . The vector sum of the two opposing vectors is the difference of the magnitudes in the direction of the greater magnitude, i.e. 20 mph @ .

The average speed is the total distance traveled divided by the total travel time. The time for the outward leg is:

hours.

Where the one-way distance is

The time for the return leg is:

The sum of these times is the total travel time:

a. Either use the formula for the horizontal ( in this case) coordinate of the vertex of the parabola, namely or set the first derivative equal to zero and solve for the same value to get the time that the ball reaches its maximum height. Then evaluate the function at that value to find the value of the maximum height.

b. Set the function equal to 0 and then solve the quadratic equation. Discard the negative root.

The first thing to do is to see if the relationship is linear. Use the slope formula and any two pairs of the first three (x, y) ordered pairs.

where and are the coordinates of the given points.

Same slope, so the points are collinear, so the function is linear.

Since it is a linear function the function can be written in the form

Substitute values:

Since we already know the slope:

So

Now all you need to do is substitute the values of x for which you have no y value and do the arithmetic.

The way you worded the question it could be either way. If balloon size is a function of amount of helium, balloon size is dependent on the independent amount of helium, whereas if the amount of helium is a function of balloon size, then the amount of helium is dependent on the independent balloon size. If you already have a graph, the one on the vertical axis is dependent on the variable on the horizontal axis.
