The second alloy has 52%, 20% and 28% Aluminum, Copper, and Cadmium respectively. The Aluminum, Copper, and Cadmium content of the third alloy is 61%, 12% and 27% respectively. How much of each alloy must be mixed to produce 1000 Lbs of alloy with the following content of 50.2% Aluminum, 23.8% Copper and 26% Cadmium? I am completely stumped on how to figure this one out. Can someone help Please? 1 solutions
Answer 368040 by scott8148(6628) on 2012-02-11 14:37:59 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!let x = amount of 1st alloy , y = amount of 2nd alloy , and z = amount of 3rd alloy
you are given the amounts of the components in the final alloy
___ Al = (50.2%)(1000) = 502 lb
___ Cu = (23.8%)(1000) = 238 lb
___ Cd = (26%)(1000) = 260 lb
.4x + .52y + .61z = 502
.38x + .2y + .12z = 238
.22x + .28y + .27z = 260
solve the system of equations to find the amounts of the three alloys

Rate-of-work-word-problems/570872: Two cylindrical cans have the same volume. The height of one can is triple the height of the other. If the radius of the narrower can is 12 units, how many units are in the length of the radius of the wider can. I drew a picture to represent the 2 cans. I know that volume of can a=volume of can b. I know the height of can a=3b. I know the radius of can a is 12 units. I know the volume of a cylinder is pi (r)squared (h). I don't know what to do next. 1 solutions

Graphs/570735: I've been trying to help my daughter, but it's been too long since I've done any algebra. She is currently in graphs, but this does not seem to fit. Anyway, here is the question posed.
A rectangular hole 2cm wide and x cm long is cut in a rectangular sheet of metal 7/2cm wide and y cm long. The length of the hole is 1 cm less than the length of the metal sheet. After the hole is cut, the area of the remaining metal is 11cm squared. Find the length of the hole and the length of the metal sheet.
I'm math stupid and having a difficult time trying to find help.
Thank you for any suggestions,

Answer 367746 by scott8148(6628) on 2012-02-09 22:28:53 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!"The length of the hole is 1 cm less than the length of the metal sheet" ___ x + 1 = y
"After the hole is cut, the area of the remaining metal is 11cm squared" ___ (2*x) + 11 = (7/2)*y
substituting ___ 2x + 11 = (7/2)(x + 1) ___ 2x + 11 = (7/2)x + (7/2) ___ 4x + 22 = 7x + 7
solve for x, then substitute back to find y

Triangles/570626: How do you find the area of a triangle with the sides 33,30 and 23. (I can NOT use Herons formula or the law of sine or cosines to find it btw. Its an extra credit problem and I need help : / 1 solutions
Answer 367742 by scott8148(6628) on 2012-02-09 22:18:50 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!use the longest side as the base
the altitude (h) divides the triangle into two right triangles; a, h, 30 and b, h ,23
a + b = 33
a^2 + h^2 = 30^2
b^2 + h^2 = 23^3
three equations, three unknowns
subtracting 2nd and 3rd equations ___ a^2 - b^2 = 30^2 - 23^2 ___ (a + b)(a - b) = 371
dividing by 1st equation ___ a - b = 371 / 33
adding 1st equation ___ a - b + a + b = 33 + (371 / 33) ___ 2a = 1460 / 33
solve for a, then substitute back to find h

Word_Problems_With_Coins/567635: Hi I am trying to help my daughter with her math homework and I know the answer to the question but I am really not sure how I came up with it. Here is the question.
Victor has 8 coins. He has 2 fewer dimes than nickels, and one more penny than nickels. How much money does he have?
In my head I figured out that there is going to be 1 dime, 3 nickels, and 4 pennies and that would of course equal 29 cents. Unfortunately we have to explain our answer and show the work and that is where I am stuck.
Thanks for your help! 1 solutions
Answer 366651 by scott8148(6628) on 2012-02-04 11:15:17 (Show Source):
