horizontal line has zero slope

y = 14

Quadratic-relations-and-conic-sections/583308: We are finding the vertex, focus or directive. Then finding an equation and graphing.
the problem I am having trouble with is
vertex= 0,0
Focus =3,0
so y=-3
here is the formula I get
(y+3)^2=(x-3)^2+(y-0)^2
y^2+6y+9=(x-3)^2+y^2
ans I get is:
y+3/2=1/6(x-3)^2
But the teacher gives us the answers and it is x=1/12y^2
Can someone explain how she got this answer?
Thank you!

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/583198: Question: Use the Rational Zeros Theorem to find all the real zeros of the polynomial function f%28x%29+=+x%5E4+-+x%5E3-6x%5E2%2B4x%2B8. Use the zeros to factor f over the real numbers.
I know the possible factors of the constant are 1, 2, 4, 8, -1, -2, -4, -8. But using the remainder theorem, none of them are actually possible factors (none of those factors have a remainder of 0). But when I graph it on a graphing calculator, there are zeros (x-intercepts). So I'm a little confused here. Thank you.

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/582661: Sorry, but I have to repeat the other question I have put because I need the equation to only use ONE variable, to be able to be solved by hand:
There are three types of bikes. A bicycle, tricycle, and tandem bikes. A bicycle as 2 wheels, 2 pedals, and 1 seat. A tricycle has 3 wheels, 2 pedals, and 1 seat. A tandem bike has 2 wheels, 4 pedals, and 2 seats.
How many of each are there if there are 144 front steering handlebars, 378 pedals, and 320 wheels? How many bicycles, tricycles, and tandem bikes?
Can you tell me the equation to find it? It's been bugging me for a while.
Ex: 2x + 2(320 - x) + ? = # of bikes or something.

Travel_Word_Problems/582597: On a straight inclined track, a ball rolling uphill takes 1.3 seconds to slow down from a velocity of 135 cm/s to a velocity of 65 cm/s. On the same track, how much time would it take a rolling ball with velocity 85 cm/s to reach a velocity of 0? Explain your reasoning. Do not use algebra.
I know that it took 1.3 sec to decrease it's velocity from 135 cm/s to 65 cm/s by 70 cm/s. If it took 1.3 sec for that, would the velocity decrease from 85 cm/s to 0 cm/s at about 2.5 sec, which I believe I'm incorrect on.

Travel_Word_Problems/581695: I'm having trouble understanding the question the book is asking. Please read the following passage and questions. The professor does not lecture and the text isn't helping - Thank you
A car and a truck are at a gas station. At 2:00 the truck starts traveling along the highway at a constant speed of 54mph. A quarter of an hour later, at 2:15, the car starts traveling along the same highway with a constant speed of 60mph. At what time will the car catch up with the truck?
Solve this problem algebraically using the following steps.
A) Let Δt be the number of hours the car travels between leaving the gas station and catching up with the truck. Is Δt the answer? If not, how can you get the answer once you found Δt?
I think Δt would be the answer as Δt equals the time between the car and truck...correct?
B) Write an expression for the car's distance from the gas station Δt hours after the car starts. Explain your reasoning.
C) Write an expression for the truck's distance from the gas station Δt hours after the car starts. Explain your reasoning.
D) Write your equation and tell why you set the two sides equal.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
subtracting 135 ___ 2z^2 + 3z - 135 = 0

the object is to factor the quadratic into two binomials and then apply the zero product rule

finding two factors of -135, that can generate a sum of 3, when one of them is multiplied by 2

-15 and 9 are factors, 9 multiplied by 2 and added to -15 gives us 3

(2z - 15)(z + 9) = 0 ___ zero product states that if the product is zero, any or all of the factors are zero

2z - 15 = 0 ___ 2z = 15 ___ z = 15/2

z + 9 = 0 ___ z = -9

starting from rest, with a uniform acceleration (gravity) ___ 900 = (1/2) * g * t^2

the gravitational acceleration (g) is 9.8 m/s^2 ___ t is in seconds

900 / 4.9 = t^2

use a calculator to find t
