Graphs/94770: Find the equation of the line passing throgh the point (32,11) and perpendicular to th line 8x+y=32. Write you answer in slope intercept form.
Can anyone explain this...greatly appreciated. 1 solutions
Answer 69070 by scott8148(6628) on 2007-08-28 16:54:33 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!rewriting in slope-intercept form gives y=-8x+32, so the slope of this line is -8
perpendicular lines have slopes that are negative reciprocals, so the slope of the new line is 1/8
using point-slope form gives (y-11)=(1/8)(x-32) ... y-11=(1/8)x-4 ... y=(1/8)x+7

I don't understand? please anyone help. thanks 1 solutions
Answer 69066 by scott8148(6628) on 2007-08-28 16:45:27 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!solving the system means finding values for x and y that work in both equations
x-7y=56+y ... x=56+8y ... multiplying the second equation by 100 gives 9y=3x-78
substituting gives 9y=3(56+8y)-78 ... 9y=168+24y-78 ... -15y=90 ... y=-6
x=56+8(-6) ... x=56-48 ... x=8

logarithm/94815: I am currently enrolled in a General Chemistry course at a community college. I should apparently already know logarithms, but I don't. Please help!
The problem is as follows...
The pK_a_ of a solution is defined by the equation: pK_a_ = -logK_a_
Where: K_a_ = acid dissociation constant
Use the rules for logarithms and exponents to solve for K_a_ in terms of pK_a_.
(a.) K_a_ = _____________
(b.) If pK_a_ = 1.64 then K_a_ = ________________
I have been able to solve problem a. K_a_ = 10^-pK_a_^
However, I cannot figure out how to get the answer to problem b.
I know that the correct answer is 2.29E-2 but I can't figure out how they get that answer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!your solution to a. has an extra exponentiation symbol at the end, maybe this is why you can't get b.
K_a_=10^(-pK_a_) ... K_a_=10^(-1.64) ... K_a_=.0229 or 2.29E-2

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/93974: I do not get how to do this nor which of the two formulas below that it needs to be done in. I tried it in both, and could not get it to work as I thought it would.
In 1975 the population of the Earth was approximately 4 billion and doubling every 35 years. The formula for the population P in year Y for this doubling rate is P (in billions) = 4 ∙2^((y-1975)/35)
The U.S. population in 1990 was approximately 250 million, and the average growth rate for the past 30 years gives a doubling time of 66 years. The above formula for the United States then becomes
P (in millions) = 250 ∙2^((y-1990)/66)
#82. Social science. What will the population of the United States be in 2025 if this growth rate continues?

If sin A < 0 and tan A < 0, then A is in what quadrant? Can someone help me out? 1 solutions
Answer 68352 by scott8148(6628) on 2007-08-22 17:17:11 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!"All Students Take Calculus" ... this "memory crutch" tells you which trig functions (sin, cos, tan) are >=0 in each quadrant
all in the first, sin in the second, tan in the third, and cos in the fourth
so A is in the fourth quadrant

expressions/93220: hi there,
I am trying to simplify the following expression
s=u.(v-u)/a + 1/2a((v-u)/a)^2
it should end up as v^2=u^2+2as
please help beacuse I cant seam to get it to come out, I have expanded the brackets but still no joy.
thankyou 1 solutions
Answer 67872 by scott8148(6628) on 2007-08-18 21:39:05 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!start by multiplying by 2a ... 2as=2u(v-u)+a^2((v-u)/a)^2 ... the a^2 cancels leaving 2as=2u(v-u)+(v-u)^2
expanding gives 2as=2uv-2u^2+v^2-2uv+u^2 ... collecting terms gives 2as=-u^2+v^2 ... adding u^2 gives u^2+2as=v^2
it helps to know the answer, but the first step of multiplying by 2a would be done anyway to eliminate the fractions

Answer 67780 by scott8148(6628) on 2007-08-17 16:55:27 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!let x=vertex angle
the angles of a triangle (ANY TRIANGLE) sum to 180 degrees ... the 2 base angles of an isoceles triangle are equal
so, ((x/2)+16)+((x/2)+16)+x=180 ... 2x+32=180 ... 2x=148 ... x=74
