Numbers_Word_Problems/209245: A group of teenagers wanted to hire a small bus for their prom and they split the $600 total cost equally. If they had had 5 fewer people, each person would have paid $10 more. How many teenagers were there and how much did they each pay? 1 solutions
Answer 158175 by scott8148(6628) on 2009-08-28 09:38:20 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!let t = number of teens
"they split the $600 total cost equally" ___ 600 / t
" If they had had 5 fewer people, each person would have paid $10 more" ___ 600/(t - 5) = (600/t) + 10
multiplying by t(t-5) ___ 600t = 600t - 3000 + 10t^2 - 50t
subtracting 600t and dividing by 10 ___ 0 = t^2 - 5t - 300
factoring ___ 0 = (t + 15)(t - 20)
t + 15 = 0 ___ t = -15 ___ negative number not realistic
t - 20 = 0 ___ t = 20
substituting ___ $600 / 20 = $30

Linear-equations/209099: This question is from textbook
I have to put this in general form. But I am totally confused. I have no idea where A,B, and C come from. Please help me! I would really appreciate it!
General Form - Ax+By+C=0
Point (0,-2) Slope m=3 When I put this in general form from slope intercept form I got the right answer:
y=3x-2
minus y on each side
3x-y-2
However on the next one Point (2,-3) Slope m=-(1/2) I did the same thing and it was wrong please help.
y=-(1/2)x-2
-(1/2)x-y-2=0
I got the exact opposite of the right answer.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!the side length of a FINISHED square is 5 3/4 ___ but that is after you have turned over a 5/8 edge on EACH side
the starting side length must be 5 3/4 + 5/8 + 5/8 or 7 inches
b. one square is 7 x 7 and you need 48 ___ 7 x 7 x 48 = ?
c. the fabric is wide enough for 5 WHOLE squares ___ 36 / 7 = 5 1/7
___ you need 48 squares ___ there are 5 in a row, so you need 10 rows ___ because 9 is not enough 9 x 5 = 45
___ 10 rows of 7 inch squares is 70 inches ___ 10 x 7 = 70
d. the fabric is one inch wider than the 5 squares per row
___ so there is a strip of "extra" material one inch wide and 70 inches long ___ 1 x 70 = 70 square inches
___ also, only 3 squares are cut from the 10th row ___ this leaves 2 squares of "extra" material ___ 2 x 7 x 7 = 98 square inches
___ so the square inches of left over fabric is ___ 70 + 98 = ?

the perpendicular line must be horizontal and of the form y=?
this means A and B have the same y-coordinate (1)
x=2 is the bisector of AB so the distance from A to x=2 is the same as the distance from x=2 to B
___ 2 - -4 = ? - 2 ___ 6 = 8 - 2 ___ so the x-coordinate of B is 8
point B is (8,1)
