Percentage-and-ratio-word-problems/220420: Hi - I got the answer to this by working it out but I cannot get to an equation. Can you help me?
A class has a boy-girl ratio of 5:3. Three more girls join the class, changing the ratio of 10:7. How many students are now in the class?
By trying and just plugging in numbers I got 30 and 18 plus 3 more, so now the total is 51 - but I'm not sure how to set it up as a problem!
Thank you! 1 solutions

You can put this solution on YOUR website!b / g = 5 / 3
"cross" multiplying ___ 3b = 5g ___ 6b = 10g
b / (g+3) = 10 / 7
7b = 10g + 30
substituting ___ 7b = 6b + 30 ___ b = 30
substituting ___ 3(30) = 5g ___ 90 = 5g ___ 18 = g
original class is 48 (30 + 18) ___ new class is 51 (48 + 3)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!when the line crosses the x-axis (x-intercept), the value of y is zero
so just substitute
0 = 0.8x - 5
5 = 0.8x
6.25 = x
x-intercept is (6.25, 0)

Linear-equations/219868: Find the slope of the line that goes through the given points.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, I'm having a lot of trouble grasping this. 1 solutions
Answer 165243 by scott8148(6628) on 2009-09-30 20:01:46 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!the slope is the ratio of the change in the y-value to the change in the x-value
you can start at either point, but you must measure the x and y changes in the SAME direction
the y-value changes from -2 to -6, so the change is -4
the x-value changes from 3 to -1, so the change is also -4
the slope (usually denoted as m) is the y-change divided by the x-change
m = (-1) / (-1) = 1

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/217965: Please help me, I do not understand this question:
In a motorcycle race, one lap is 650m. Genna starts off 4s after Tom does, but drives 5m/s faster and finishes 2.5s sooner than he does.
a) Find the speed of each driver
b) Find the time taken by each of them to cover the distance
Ans: Tom: 20.0m/s, 32.5s Genna: 25.0m/s, 26s
I read somewhere that Genna's time is t-6.5s. Why is that? She finished 2.5s sooner, not 4 + 2.5

I have tried switching the x's for y. I get stuck at this step of the problem:
{(xy)-(2x)} / 3
I've looked online for inverse help, but nothing makes sense! Everyone just says switch the x for y.
Thanks 1 solutions
Answer 164234 by scott8148(6628) on 2009-09-27 19:07:23 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!switching x and y ___ x = (3y) / (y - 2)
dividing by x and multiplying by (y - 2) ___ y - 2 = 3y / x
dividing by y ___ 1 - (2 / y) = 3 / x
adding 1 (or x/x) ___ -2 / y = (3 + x) / x
take inverse and multiply by -2 ___ y = -2x / (3 + x)
the domain is all real numbers EXCEPT -3

You can put this solution on YOUR website!the sides are all whole numbers (so M must also be a whole number)
the smallest (non-zero) whole number is 1
in a triangle, the sum of any two sides must be greater than the third side; otherwise the triangle doesn't "close up"
so 3 is the smallest possible value for M ___ with a side of 1
M=4 doesn't close ___ 1+1 is NOT greater than 2
M=5 ; 2, 2, 1
M=6 ; 3, 2, 1 doesn't close ___ but 2, 2, 2 works
M=7 ; 3, 3, 1
M=8 ; 4, 3, 1 doesn't close ___ but 3, 3, 2 works
it looks like:
___ if M is odd, then the shortest side is 1
___ if M is even (except for 4), then the shortest side is 2
