Rate-of-work-word-problems/236071: Maria, an experienced shipping clerk, can fill a certain order in 6 hours. Bill, a new clerk, needs 11 hours to do the same job. Working together, how long will it take them to fill the order? 1 solutions
Answer 173825 by scott8148(6628) on 2009-11-06 23:29:07 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!their combined time determines the fraction of the job each one does
___ the fractions add to one (the whole job)
(x / 6) + (x / 11) = 1
11x + 6x = 66
x = 66 / 16 = 4.125

Sequences-and-series/236027: Find the annual rate of growth on an account that was worth $1000 in 1996 and was worth $1400 in 1999.
I have tried like this: 1996-1999 is 3 years, and it had raised $400
400/1000 x 100= 40% which means it has raised 40% in 3 years, so is the answer 40/3= 13.33% per year????
Please tell me if i'm right or wrong. Thanks very much! 1 solutions

Problems-with-consecutive-odd-even-integers/235767: The product of two consecutive intergers is 19 more than their sum. find the numbers.
This is the equation I came up with = x(x+2)=(x+x+2+19),but it works out to x to the second power minus 21. how do I factor it out? 1 solutions
Answer 173585 by scott8148(6628) on 2009-11-05 22:14:08 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!"The product of two consecutive intergers" ___ x(x+1)
"is" ___ =
"19 more than" ___ + 19
"their sum" ___ x + x+1
x(x+1) = x + x+1 + 19
x^2 + x = 2x + 20
x^2 - x - 20 = 0
(x + 4)(x - 5) = 0

Linear_Equations_And_Systems_Word_Problems/235318: Hello, I was helping my aunt with some of the problems she had with inequalities before i stumbled upon this. Its been years since I last took algebra, so please help me out with this.
1. In 2002, a one year old Acura was worth $18,249, with a depreciation of $1903 per year. A year old Subaru sedan was worth about $14,564 with a depreciation of $1225 per year.
(a) Let V be the value in $ of the Acura at t years since 2002, find an equation of a model to describe the data.
(b) Let V be the value in $ of the Subaru car at t years since 2002, find an equation of a model to describe the data.
(c) Use substitution or elimination to predict when the two cars will have the same value. What is that value.
Thanks. 1 solutions
Answer 173384 by scott8148(6628) on 2009-11-04 23:41:06 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!(a) V = 18249 - 1903t
(b) V = 14564 - 1225t
(c) substituting ___ 18249 - 1903t = 14564 - 1225t
adding 1903t-14564 ___ 3685 = 678t
dividing by 678 ___ t = 3685 / 678 = 5.435 (approx) ___ about 5 1/2 yrs from 2002
substituting ___ V = 18249 - 1903 (3685 / 678) = 7906

The hudson river flows at a rate of 3 miles per hour. A patrol boat travels 60 miles upriver, and returns in a total time of 9 hours. What is the speed of the boat in still water? 1 solutions
Answer 173119 by scott8148(6628) on 2009-11-03 22:02:36 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!time = distance / rate ___ let x ="speed in still water"
[60 / (x - 3)] + [60 / (x + 3)] = 9
multiplying by (x - 3)(x + 3) ___ 60x - 180 + 60 x + 180 = 9x^2 - 81
0 = 9x^2 - 120x - 81
0 = 3x^2 - 40x - 27
discriminant = (-40)^2 - (4 * 3 * (-27)) = 160 + 324

Expressions-with-variables/233993: Nicole has 20 coins in nickels, dimes, and quarters. She has 6 more quarters than nickels and $3.30 in all. How many nickels does she have? How many dimes? How many quarters? 1 solutions
Answer 172616 by scott8148(6628) on 2009-11-02 01:01:39 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!"20 coins in nickels, dimes, and quarters" ___ n + d + q = 20 ___ d = 20 - n - q
"6 more quarters than nickels" ___ q = n + 6
"$3.30 in all" ___ 5n + 10d + 25q = 330
substituting ___ d = 20 - n - n - 6 = 14 - 2n
substituting ___ 5n + 10(14 - 2n) + 25(n + 6) = 330
___ 5n + 140 - 20n + 25n + 150 = 330
___ 10n = 40 ___ n = 4
substituting ___ q = 4 + 6 = 10
substituting ___ d = 20 - 4 - 10 = 6
