Quadratic_Equations/367255: I've been trying to solve this problem for a while now and no matter what I do I can't get the answers to check. Here's the problem: Joe has a collection of nickels and dimes that is worth $6.20. If the number of dimes was doubled and nickels were decreased by 37, the value of the coins would be worth $4.20. How many nickels and dimes do you have? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for the help!

Geometry_Word_Problems/366869: Two students are using a measuring tape to find the length of a room.The tape reads 13 ft 6.25 inches.However, the student at one end is holding the tape 9 in. higher than the student at the other end. What is the difference between their measurement and the true length?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the tape is the hypotenuse of a right triangle , while the 9 in and the true length are the two sides

(13 ft 6.25 in)^2 = (t)^2 + (9 in)^2

162.25^2 = t^2 + 9^2 ___ t^2 = 162.25^2 - 9^2 ___ t = sqrt(162.25^2 - 81)

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/366394: The figure shows a lever system, similar to a seesaw that you might find in a childrenÂ’s playground. For the system to balance, the product of the weight and its distance from the fulcrum must be the same on each side; that is,
w1x1 = w2x2This equation is called the law of the lever.

A plank 35 ft long rests on top of a flat-roofed building, with 5 ft of the plank projecting over the edge, as shown in the figure. A worker weighing 245 lb sits on one end of the plank. What is the largest weight that can be hung on the projecting end of the plank if it is to remain in balance?

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/366402: Next-door neighbors Bob and Jim use hoses from both houses to fill Bob's swimming pool. They know that it takes 16 h using both hoses. They also know that Bob's hose, used alone, takes 50% less time than Jim's hose alone. How much time is required to fill the pool by each hose alone?

Answer 261097 by scott8148(6628) About Me  on 2010-11-04 23:23:30 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Bob's hose takes half the time , so it fills twice as fast

in the 16 hrs it takes to fill the pool , Bob's hose fills 2/3 of the pool and Jim's hose fills 1/3

16 hrs to fill 1/3 means 48 hrs to fill 3/3 (the whole pool)

Bob's hose takes half that time or 24 hrs

Expressions-with-variables/366196: I need to write an equation and then solve using the substitution method. I am confused on writing the equation.

Now, the question. The sales representative later indicates that there are three times as many homes available with the second floor plan than the first. Write an equation that illustrates this situation.

Linear_Equations_And_Systems_Word_Problems/365772: I am working on Systems of Equations.
Jackie bought some stamps for $15.16. Some were 26 cent stamps and soe were 41 cent stamps. She bought 41 stamps in all. How many of each stamp did she buy?
I have defined variables as: a=# of 26 cent stamps and b=# of 41 cent stamps
I have written out the two equations (i believe they are right but they may be the reason I can't figure out the problem): .26a+.41b=15.16
a+b=41
I have multiplied the first one by 100 to eliminate the decimals, but as I go through the problem using elimination ( that is what I was directed to use my my teacher) I end up with decimals and that can't be right as you can't have 2.121212121 stamps...
Hopefully you can help me, it would be much appreciated and thank-you. :)

Graphs/365269: Here is my question. Solve and graph.
6-2x >= 12 and 4x - 5 > 15

which I thought it would be:
x/x <=3
x/-3<=x<5
x/x>5

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(x/3) + (x/4) + (x/5) + 8 + 5 = x

multiplying by 60 (LCD) ___ 20x + 15x + 12x + 480 + 300 = 60x

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a^2 + 15^2 = (a - 13)^2 + 24^2

a^2 + 225 = a^2 - 26a + 169 + 576 ___ 26a = 520 ___ a = 20

the two sides of the triangle are 15 and 20
___(looks like a 3-4-5 triangle) so the hypotenuse (ladder) is ?

Probability-and-statistics/364102: A machine has four components, A, B, C, and D, set up in such a manner that all four parts must work for the the machine to work properly. Assume the probability of one part working does not depend on the functionality of any of the other parts. Also assume that the probabilities of the individual parts working are P(A)=P(B)=0.93, P(C)=0.99, and P(D)=0.95. Find the probability that at least one of the four parts will work.

the probability that at least one part will work is equal to ONE minus "the probability that NONE of the parts work"

P = 1 - [(1 - .93)(1 - .93)(1 - .99)(1 - .95)]

Quadratic_Equations/363129: Create the quadratic equation in the form y=ax^2+bx+c using the point (0,2) as one point and the point (9,-8) as the vertex. Enter the a,b, and c values as common fractions in reduced form.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
using the vertex form ___ y = a(x - 9)^2 - 8

substituting ___ 2 = a(0 - 9)^2 - 8 ___ 10 = 81a ___ 10/81 = a

expanding ___ y = (10/81)x^2 - (20/9)x + 2

Numbers_Word_Problems/362903: I came across a problem today in my Algebra 2 Book that I am not sure how to approach. I know sum means addition, but what does coefficient supposed to mean in this problem? Would doing 4x+4y be a step in the right direction? I am expected to know this for the upcoming quiz, and any help on this will be very much appreciated. My problem is not knowing what it is asking exactly.
problem:
Rick's typing speed in WPM(words per minute) equals the sum of the coefficients of the 5 terms of (x+y)4. How many words per minute can Rick type?

help is appreciated,

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
there seems to be an exponentiation sign missing

the problem is to expand the binomial (x + y)^4
___ then add (sum) the coefficients of the terms to find Rick's typing speed

you are only interested in the numerical value of the coefficients

use Pascal's Triangle or the binomial theorem
