1 solutions

Answer 42134 by scoop(27) About Me  on 2006-11-13 18:45:44 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
use distribtion to get rid of brackets;
3x-20-4x=x+8
combine like terms
-x-20=x+8
get all variables to one side
-x-x=8+20
-2x=28
divide both sides by -2
x=-14

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
2a-6=-a
isolate your variable
-6=-a-2a
-6=-3a
divide both sides by -3
a=2

Linear-equations/61199: 4X - y = -3
y = 4x + 3
1 solutions

Answer 42132 by scoop(27) About Me  on 2006-11-13 18:37:18 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
you are given what the y variable is, so just plug it in and solve:
4x-(4x+3)=-3
4x-4x-3=-3
0-3=-3
-3=-3
x=-3
y=-9

Inequalities/61226: what is 3x-4(5+x)=x+8
1 solutions

Answer 42131 by scoop(27) About Me  on 2006-11-13 18:27:41 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
use the distribution method
3x-20-4x=x+8
combine like terms
3x-4x-20=x+8
-x-20=x+8
get variables on one side
-20=2x+8
-20-8=2x
-28=2x
divide both sides by 2
x=-14
if you plug -14 in for all of your x variables you will see that it checks

Equations/56405: Please help me solve this equation: 5(2y-1)=3(y-4)
Thank you.
1 solutions

Answer 38263 by scoop(27) About Me  on 2006-10-15 15:23:15 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
5(2y-1)=3(y-4)
10y-5=3y-12 add 5 to both sides
10y=3y-12+5
10y=3y-7 subtract 3y from both sides
7y=-7
y=-1 plug in for variable and you will see that it is correct!

Linear-systems/56376: solve the system
3x+4y=40
x-2y=0
1 solutions

Answer 38234 by scoop(27) About Me  on 2006-10-15 13:09:00 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
3x+4y=40
x-2y=0
I would use the elimination method and get rid of the y variable:
3x+4y=40
(2)x-2y=0 leaving you with 2x-4y=0
then you simply add equations
3x+4y=40
2x-4y=0
5x=40 divide both sides by 5
x=8
to check...substitute 8 in expression for x
3(8)+4y=40
24+4y=40
4y=40-24
4y=16
y=4
24+16=40
8-8=0
you are correct!!!

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/56355: Can you help me with solving a rational equation? The problem is:
x^2/x+4 + 8x+16/x+4. I could not find any problems like this worked on this site. Thanks.
1 solutions

Answer 38218 by scoop(27) About Me  on 2006-10-15 11:27:21 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
This one is pretty easy, because you already have a common denominator:
x^2/(x+4)+8x+16/(X+4)
so you simply add your numerators
x^2+8x+16 and keep your denominator to get:
x^2+8x+16/(x+4), then factor numerator to get:
(x+4)(x+4) all over (x+4)
cancel out one in the numerator and one in the denominator which leaves you with:
(X+4) AS YOUR ANSWER

Linear-systems/52247: This question is from textbook
solve each sytem by graphing.
x + y = 6
x - y = 2
1 solutions

Answer 34805 by scoop(27) About Me  on 2006-09-14 15:09:15 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You can use the elimination method since the y's both cancel each other out leaving you with
2x=8
x=4 then substitute the x value into your equation to get y:
4+y=6
-4 on both sides
y=2 then substitute both variables for a check
your answer is (4,2)

Equations/51998: tutor please help me solve for 5-(x-6)=4
Travis
1 solutions

Answer 34801 by scoop(27) About Me  on 2006-09-14 14:57:22 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
5-(x-6)=4
5-x+6=4
5-x+6-6=4-6
5-x=-2
-5+5-x=2-5
-x=-3 divide both sides by negative (because x can not be neg.)
x=3/2

Expressions-with-variables/51831: 3x-y=5

You can solve this by using the addition method, because you have two like variables ( the negative and positive y cancel out) leaving you with:
5x=5 divide both sides by 5 leaving you with:
x=1

Distributive-associative-commutative-properties/26724: Please help me solve this equation: 2=n-(2n+3). I need to find the value of n. The book has the answer in the back for reference but I keep coming up with the wrong answer. This is the solution I got:
2=n-(2n+3)
2=n-2n+3
2=1n+3
-3=1n-3
-1/1=1n/1 n=1

1 solutions

Answer 21874 by scoop(27) About Me  on 2006-05-01 08:22:15 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
2=n-(2n+3)=
2=n-2n-3(the negative in front of parenthesis, changes all signs)
then add 3 to both sides
2+3=n-2n-3+3
5=n-2n
5=-n
divide bothe sides by the negative
n=-5
If you replace the n with a negative 5 you wll see that this works!!

Distributive-associative-commutative-properties/27089: Please help me solve the problem: (3w + 7)(2w - 5)
1 solutions

Answer 21872 by scoop(27) About Me  on 2006-05-01 08:09:52 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Use the foil method:
(3w+7)(2w-5)=
(F) 3w*2w=6w^2
(O) 3w*-5+=-15w
(I) 7*2w= 14w
(L) 7*-5=-35 so
6w^2-15w+14w-35
combine like terms
6w^2-w-35

Signed-numbers/11209: Please help me solve this problem: ((( 3 more than twice a number is 2 ))) I have to write this as an algebraic expression or equation.
1 solutions

Answer 21639 by scoop(27) About Me  on 2006-04-29 10:15:45 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The number will be x
So three more than twice a number is
2x+3=2
then subtract the three from both sides to get like terms
2x=2-3
2x=-1
divide both sides by the 2 to get x by itself
x=-1/2 (your answer)
to check this answer multiply
2(-1/2) +3 =2
-2/2 +3=2
-1+3=2

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/35294: I NEED HELP FACTORING:
X^2 - 6X + 5
1 solutions

Answer 21499 by scoop(27) About Me  on 2006-04-28 14:57:43 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Start off by factoring the x^2, knowing that the factors of 6 are either 5,1 or 3,2 (you will use 5,1 because they add up to 6) then you have to play with your signs, but since you need a positive 5, you will use two negative terms.
(x-5)(x-1)
Then to check yourself
Foil:
x^2-1x-5x+5=
combine like terms:
x^2-6x+5
