One-half hour after the boat leaves, a second boat leaves Galveston following the first boat. The first boat is traveling at 25 mph, while the second boat travels at 35 mph. How long will it take the second boat to over take the first boat? 1 solutions
Answer 316794 by rwm(914) on 2011-06-17 14:33:36 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!basically the first boat got ahead by 12.5 miles
the second boat gains on the first boat at 10 mph.
how long will it take the second boat to go 12.5 miles gaining at 10 mph
r*t=d
25*(t+1/2)=35t
25t+12.5=35t
12.5=10t
1.25=t

1 solutions
Answer 316622 by rwm(914) on 2011-06-16 16:39:24 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!One problem ata time.
Really? Yes, you are not the only one who wants urgent help.
2x^2+5x-3=0
you want factors of -6 that add up to 5
6 and -1
2x^2+6x-1x-3=0
2x*(x+3)-1*(x+3)=0
(2x-1)*(x+3)=0
x=1/2
x=-3
| Solved by pluggable solver: SOLVE quadratic equation with variable |
Quadratic equation (in our case ) has the following solutons:

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant should not be a negative number.
First, we need to compute the discriminant : .
Discriminant d=49 is greater than zero. That means that there are two solutions: .

Quadratic expression can be factored:

Again, the answer is: 0.5, -3.

Linear-systems/461823: solve by elimination
4x+5y=5
8x+10y=10
Am i suppose to put this into y=mx+b form ? 1 solutions
Answer 316621 by rwm(914) on 2011-06-16 16:32:20 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!no multiply the first by 2 and you will see that it is the same as the second.
They are the same line.
So there are infinite solutions to this .
All x's and y's match.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!Do not submit the same problem in more than one category nor twice in 24 hours.
you are not the only one here.
I saw your problem but bypassed it because it isn't clear what are the numerators and denominators.
We are not mind readers.
Use plenty of parentheses or graphics to clarify.
If you wish to send me the problem with clarifications, I will take a look.

Graphs/461756: Hello,
I'm having difficulties setting up this word problem:
Sam bought 50 stamps at 14 and 22 cents each. He paid the postal clerk
$10.04. How many 22-cent stamps did he buy?
I tried to set the problem up like this:
x+y=50 letting the x=14 and y=22
y=x-50
14x + 22y = 50
14x + 22(50-x)=50
14x + 1100 -22x = 50
-8x = -1050
-8x/-8 = -1050/8
x= 131.25
Not sure where I went wrong. I appreciate any help. Thank you. 1 solutions

Numeric_Fractions/461732: How would you sketch the fraction 12/8?
In the problem we are asked to visually show through a drawing how the fractions 2/3 and 12/8 are equal. Please Help!
I would greatly appreciate it!!! Some of the problems show a context that we could use for our drawings. For example one had Popsicle sticks, marbles, and for this problem we have to make one of our own. I already sketched 2/3 using flowers as the context. 1 solutions
