Quadratic-relations-and-conic-sections/451902: Find equation for the ellipse that shares a vertex and focus with the parabola x^2 + y = 100 and has its other focus at the origin?
I know what the shape of the two figures together would look like, and i found that 2C is 100, since that is the distance between foci. From that I determined that 2b - c = 100. What I don't get is how to find a and b. Thanks very much!

Answer 310708 by robertb(4012) About Me  on 2011-05-19 22:24:23 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You say that the ellipse shares a vertex (the point (0, 100)) and a focus with the parabola x%5E2+%2B+y+=+100, or y+=+-x%5E2+%2B+100, or 4%2A%281%2F4%29%2A%28y+-+100%29+=+-%28x-0%29%5E2. Hence for the parabola, the distance from the vertex to the focus is 1/4. Also, one focus of the ellipse must be (0, 399/4). It was given that the other focus of the ellipse is (0,0) (the origin). The center of the ellipse is then the point (0, 399/8). So
c+=+399%2F4+-+399%2F8+=+399%2F8, and a+=+100+-+399%2F8+=+401%2F8.
Then b%5E2+=+a%5E2+-+c%5E2+=+25
Then the standard equation is
x%5E2%2F%28401%2F8%29%5E2+%2B+%28y+-+399%2F8%29%5E2%2F25+=+1, or
%2864x%5E2%29%2F160801+%2B+%28y-399%2F8%29%5E2%2F25+=+1.

1%2Fa+%2B+1%2Fb+=+23%2F318
1%2Fb+%2B+1%2Fc+=+5%2F66
1%2Fa+%2B+1%2Fc+=+23%2F396
Subtracting the 2nd equation from the 1st, we get 1%2Fa+-+1%2Fc+=+-2%2F583.
Adding the previous equation to the 3rd equation gives 2%2Fa+=+1147%2F20988.
==> a%2F2+=+20988%2F1147 ==> a+=+41976%2F1147+=+36%26684%2F1147 hours.
You can now get the values for b and c.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Considering only the highest powers for the numerator and denominator, the function is reduced to %283x%29%2Fx+=+3. Letting x approach infinity, f(x) then approaches 3, and hence the horizontal asymptote is y = 3.
The vertical asymptote is where x + 4 = 0, or x = -4, which is the equation of the vertical asymptote itself.

Considering only the highest power for the numerator and denominator, the function is reduced to x%2Fx%5E2+=+1%2Fx. Letting x approach infinity, the limit of g(x) is 0. Hence the horizontal asymptote is y = 0.
The vertical asymptotes are exactly x = 2 and x = -2.

Quadratic_Equations/4812: why do you factor a quadratic equation before you solve?

Answer 310498 by robertb(4012) About Me  on 2011-05-19 02:56:38 (Show Source):

Because you want to take advantage of the Zero-Product property, which says a*b = 0 implies either a = 0 or b = 0. Factoring a quadratic expression involves reversing the distributive property of multiplication over addition, the result being the product of two linear factors.

using the Pythagorean theorem, we get %28x%2B4%29%5E2+%2B+%28x%2B7%29%5E2+=+%283x%29%5E2
<==> x%5E2+%2B+8x+%2B+16+%2B+x%5E2+%2B+14x+%2B+49+=+9x%5E2
<==> 7x%5E2+-22x+-+65+=+0
<==> (7x + 13)(x-5) = 0
==> x = 5
The perimeter is x+4 +x+7 + 3x = 5x + 11
Hence the perimeter is 5*5 + 11 = 25 + 11 = 36.
(We cannot accept the other x-value -13/7 for an apparent reason.)
