Word_Problems_With_Coins/250009: Penny collected some change in preparation for a garage sale. She collected two more nickles than twice the number of dimes and eight fewer quarters than twice the number of nickles. If the value of the quarters was $1.60 greater than four times the value of the nickles and dimes together, what was the total value of the change that Penny collected? 1 solutions
Answer 182016 by richwmiller(9135) on 2009-12-14 22:18:05 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!the hard part of these coin problems is setting up the equations
for every variable (unknown) we need another equation
so if we have 3 unknowns we need 3 equations
let n= nickels
q=quarters
d=dimes
n=2d+2
2n-8=q
25q=160+4(5n+10d)
let me know what you get

Numbers_Word_Problems/250011: You use a garden hose to fill a swimming pool at a constant rate. The pool is empty when you begin to fill it. The pool contains 15 gallons of water after 5 minutes. After 30 minutes, the pool contains 90 gallons of water. Write an equation that gives the volume (in gallons) of water in the pool as a function of the number of minutes since you began filling it. Explain how you can find the time it takes to put 150 gallons of water in the pool. 1 solutions

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/250004: Factor 3z^2+14z +8
I have tried this repeatedly and I keep coming up with an answer that is exactly like the problem
1 solutions
Answer 181998 by richwmiller(9135) on 2009-12-14 21:44:10 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!there are several ways to look at this but the simplest is to factor
with 3z as the beginning of one of the factors
we need to come up with 14 and 8 using 3
what are factors of 8 which can combine with 3 to make 14
4*2=8 and 3*4+2=14
let's try (3z+4)(z+2)
that gives us 8 but not the 14 but only 10
let's try (3z+2)(z+4) yes (3*4) +2=14 and 2*4=8

a-1.2b=-3
0.2b+0.6a=12 1 solutions
Answer 181982 by richwmiller(9135) on 2009-12-14 21:28:04 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!a-1.2b=-3
0.2b+0.6a=12
we have two linear equation which form lines on a graph with two variables
we can then solve for the two variables by elimination or substitution.
we will substitute
a-1.2b=-3
add 1.2b to both sides
a=1.2b-3
Substitute 1.2b-3 for a in the second equation.
0.2b+0.6(1.2b-3)=12
expand and solve for b
.2b+.6*1.2b-.6*3=12
add .6*3 to both sides
.2b+.6*1.2b=.6*3+12

Linear-equations/249996: Here is another one I don't understand it say to translate to an algebraic expression, the product of 29% and some number the translation is ? it also says make the percentage a decimal and use q to represent some number
What exactly are they asking? Thank You 1 solutions
Answer 181977 by richwmiller(9135) on 2009-12-14 21:21:24 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Let q=some number
We want 29% of q
29%=29/100=.29 which is the decimal for 29%
Product means two quantities multiplied together.
the two quantities are .29 and q
So we want .29q which is an algebraic expression of 29% of q
Algebraic expression means it is written with a variable in this case q
if we set it equal to something then the expression becomes an equation.
If I said that .29q =58 then we would have an equation.

Linear-equations/249992: This says find the slope if it exists
x=-6
m=? it has to be an integer or simplified fraction
or undefined
Can someone help me with this? 1 solutions
Answer 181973 by richwmiller(9135) on 2009-12-14 21:15:01 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!if x=-6
slope is y1-y2 over x1-x2
but if the difference in x is also zero then the slope is undefined and the line is vertical.
if you look at a graph of the line where x is always -6 then you see that y can be anything but x is always -6-- a vertical line

Linear_Equations_And_Systems_Word_Problems/249982: In an election A got 400 more votes than B. If 1/8 of the votes for A had gone to B, B would have had 500 more votes than A. In the original election how many votes did A and B get? 1 solutions
Answer 181969 by richwmiller(9135) on 2009-12-14 21:09:05 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!a=b+400
a+b=x
a-1a/8+500=b+a/8
substitute a+b for x
a-a/8+500=b+a/8
substitute b+400 for a
b+400-(b+400)/(8)+500=b+(b+400)/8
factor
(1/8)*(-b-400)+b+900=b+(1/8)*(b+400)
expand out terms
b7/8+850=9b/8+50
get b on one side
and numbers on other
800=2b/8
800=b/4
3200=b
a=3200+400=3600
a+b=6800
3600/8=450
check
if 450 votes for a became 450 for b
then
3650 for b
3150 would be for a
500 more for b
ok

Proportions/249966: I need help trying to figure this problem out....3/4=x/x+3
4X=3(x+3) right???
this is where i am stumped 1 solutions
Answer 181961 by richwmiller(9135) on 2009-12-14 20:30:02 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Is it 3/4=(x)/(x+3) ?
if so yes you can get 4x=3(x+3)
now divide by 4 (both sides)
x=3(x+3)/4
expand 3(x+3)
x=3x/4+9/4
remember 1x=4x/4
Now get all variables (x)on one side and all constants on the other.

Pythagorean-theorem/249806: Below is a homework problem in which I would greatly appreciate your help in showing me the steps to complete this problem correctly. Though the answer was provided in the book,I would like to know how to do it on my own. Thank you for your patience and assistance.
Use trigonometric ratios to find the unknown sides and angles in the following right triangle. Do not use a calculator.
x =
y =
θ =
The triangle presented for the problem has the following already revealed: 60 degrees, 7 (on the side opposite the smaller angle). The rest is up to us to find. I hope I provided enough information given that the right triangle would not paste into the question box.
