Linear_Algebra/252519: Can someone please point me in the right direction with this experiment. Probabilities and Binomial Experiments.
U.S. Population by Region. The U.S. population by region (in millions) for selected years is given in the table. Find the probability that a U.S. resident selected at random satisfies the following:
a.) lived in the West in 1997.
b.) lived in the Midwest in 1995.
c.) lived in the Northwest or Midwest in 1997.
d.) lived in the South or West in 1997.
e.) What are the odds that a randomly selected U.S. resident in 2000 was not from the South?
REGION 1995 1997 2000
Northwest 51.4 51.6 53.6
Midwest 61.8 62.5 64.4
South 91.8 94.2 100.2
West 57.7 59.4 63.2
(Answers) a. .222 b. .235 c. .426 d. .574 e. 302 to 167

Answer 184491 by richwmiller(9143) on 2009-12-29 01:43:14 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!the first thing to do is finish the table with totals for us population for each year in question
REGION 1995 1997 2000
Northwest 51.4 51.6 53.6
Midwest 61.8 62.5 64.4
South 91.8 94.2 100.2
West 57.7 59.4 63.2
sum(1995)=51.4+61.8+91.8+57.7
sum(1997)=51.6+62.5+94.2+59.4=267.7
sum(2000)=53.6+64.4+100.2+63.2
a) lived in west in 1997
59.4/267.7=.2219=.222
so the part over the whole= probability

Coordinate-system/252502: Solve the following system of equations algebraically:
2y = 8 − x
y − 2x = −1
1 solutions
Answer 184487 by richwmiller(9143) on 2009-12-29 00:55:29 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!put the two equations in the same order
2y=8-x
y=2x-1
y=-1+2x (A)
2y=8-x (B)
multiply (A) by 2
2y=-2+4x (C)
2y=8-x (B)
2y=2+4x (c)
subtract C from B
0=6-3x
subtract 6 from both sides
6=3x
divide both sides by -3
2=x
substitute 2 for x in any equation
2y=8-x
2y=8-(2)
2y=8-2
2y=6
y=3
x=2
check
y=2x-1
3=2(2)-1
3=3
ok

Linear_Algebra/252517: Please help. I cannot figure just what formula to use.
(Using Nonlinear Systems) Solving problems using a System of of Equation in two variables.
Unknown numbers. Find two numbers whose sum is 10 and whose squares differ by 20.
Answer( 6 and 4) 1 solutions
Answer 184476 by richwmiller(9143) on 2009-12-29 00:09:37 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!there is no formula but we must make two equations with two unknowns
let n and m be the two numbers
n+m=10
n^2-m^2=20
n=10-m
substitute
(10-m)^2-m^2=20
100-20m+m^2-m^2=20
fortunately the squared variables are cancelled out
80-20m=0
80=20m
4=m
n=10-m
n=10-4=6

Graphs/252516: How do i simplify and solve this equation 6-2x=5x-9x+10 1 solutions
Answer 184475 by richwmiller(9143) on 2009-12-29 00:03:38 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!the goal is to get all numbers on one side and all letters (x in this case ) on the other.
We do that by adding to both sides or subtracting from both sides or dividing both sides or multiplying both sides.
but first we combine terms on each side.
so we combine terms on the right side
5x-9x=-4x
so now we have
6-2x=-4x+10
we want all numbers on the right and all letters on the left
so what do we do to remove numbers from the left
we subtract 6 because 6-6=0
so -2x=-4x+4
we want x on the left so we add 4x to both sides because -4x+4x=0
2x=4
divide by 2
x=2
now we check
if the number on the right equals the number on the left then x does = 2
6-2x=5x-9x+10
6-2(2)=5*2-9*2+10
6-4=10-18+10
2=20-18
2=2
ok

Unit_Conversion_Word_Problems/252494: If the dimensions of a cube of sample are 3 inches * 6 inches * 1 foot, what's the volume of that cube in cubic centimeters? Give your answer in scientific notation. 1 solutions
Answer 184460 by richwmiller(9143) on 2009-12-28 20:03:33 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!A cube has all sides equal.
What are these dimensions you speak of?
No. I didn't answer your question because your question makes no sense.
You have three dimensions which are not equal and say that they are dimensions of a cube.
That can't be because a cube has all sides equal
A cube can't have height, width and length different.
A cube has height, width and length that are all the same.
So your question is messed up.
You might as well ask me for the corners of a circle.
They don't exist.
And your cube is not a cube.

Geometry_proofs/252485: please i need help on proofs, i don't understand anything about it...thank you!! 1 solutions
Answer 184427 by richwmiller(9143) on 2009-12-28 16:50:39 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!proofs are logic and reasoning
proofs start with what you know and reason to something you didn't know.
we often start with definitions
based on the information we know and the definition we can assume other info.sometimes it is better to start with the thing to be proven and work backwards.

Rate-of-work-word-problems/252467: First I just hope I'm in the right section, I have been trying to figure out how to solve this problem but I just can't come up with the right formula.
An office has an old copying machine and a new one. Working together it takes both machines 6 hours to make all the copies of the annual financial report. Working alone the old machine takes 15 hours longer than the new machine. How long would it take the new machine to make all the copies working alone? 1 solutions
Answer 184395 by richwmiller(9143) on 2009-12-28 13:58:09 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!I moved the problem to word problems rate of work.
What do we know?
old machine takes x+15
in one hour old machine takes 1/(x+15)
new machine takes x hours
in one hour the new machine takes 1/(x)
o=6 and n=6
together they take 6 hours
n/x+o/(x+15)=1
6/x+6/(x+15)=1
x=8.10= new machine alone
x+15=23.1 old machine alone

Geometry_Word_Problems/252465: the height of a over sized container is 3m. Its diameter is 2m.What is its area?(A)16m2(B)12m2 (C)18m2 (D)25m2 1 solutions
Answer 184379 by richwmiller(9143) on 2009-12-28 12:41:18 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Assuming this a cylindrical container, we can calculate the area.
radius =1 meter
2*pi*r*h=surface area without ends =2*3.14*1*3=18.84 m^2
2*pi*r*h+2*(pi*r*r)
2*3.14*1*3+2*3.14*1*1
(2*3.14*1)*(3+1)=25.12m^2

x+36.4-.65x=44.8
.35x+36.4=44.8
.35x=8.4
multiply by 100 to remove decimals
35x=840
x=24 grams of pure silver are added to 32 grams of 65% silver
check
1*24+.65(32)=56*.80

for example 18/37=.486486486486
before you convert 1 3/7 convert to an improper fraction 10/7 which equals 1.4285
I will leave the others as an exercize for you
