Linear-systems/255664: what is a system equation and how do you solve? 1 solutions
Answer 187878 by richwmiller(9144) on 2010-01-11 11:33:58 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!system of equations means more than one equation with the same variables.
There are three common ways of solving them.
graphing
substitution (find the value of one in terms of the other and substitute that for the one.) Sounds worse than it is.
elimination (adding , multiplying them )

Parallelograms/255640: If you have a parallelogram with two lines bisecting. with m+9.1 on one half of the bisector and 4k-3.5 on the other side. and on the other line there is 2.6k and m. How do you solve this without having to deal with 2 variables? 1 solutions
Answer 187873 by richwmiller(9144) on 2010-01-11 11:27:22 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Let's look at what we know before we panic.
Since the line bisects it creates two equal parts.
m+9.1=4k-3.5
oh no we have one equation with two variables.
Stay calm; we aren't finished yet.
2.6k=m
Oh now we have two equations with two variables. So we can solve the two equations and find out where they intersect.
Well, look at that m=2.6k
We can substitute 2.6k for m in the first equation.
2.6k+9.1=4k-3.5
We now have one equation with one variable.
Panic attack avoided.
k=9
2.6k=m
2.6*(9)=m
23.4 = m
We can check.
23.4+9.1=4(9)-3.5
32.5=32.5
ok

Percentage-and-ratio-word-problems/250092: The will of an eccentric millionaire reads as follows: "I leave 4/17 of my estate to my son, 7/13 of the remainder to my wife, 2/3 of this remainder to my daughter, and the remaining $2 million to my dog." What was the total amount of the estate? 1 solutions
Answer 187816 by richwmiller(9144) on 2010-01-11 07:57:28 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!w=a+b+c+2 000 000
a=4w/17
b=7/13*(17w/17-4w/17)=7/13*13w/17=7w/17
c=2/3(w-4w/17-7w/17)=2/3*(w-11w/17)=2/3*6w/17=4w/17
w=4w/17+7w/17+4w/17+2,000,000
w=15w/17+2 000 000
2w/17=2 000 000
2w=34 000 000
w=$17,000,000

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/255555: According to Bruce Harrell, CPA, the
federal income tax for a class C corporation is found by
solving a linear equation. The reason for the equation is that
the amount x of federal tax is deducted before the state tax
is figured, and the amount of state tax is deducted before
the federal tax is figured. To find the amount of federal tax
for a corporation with a taxable income of $200,000, for
which the federal tax rate is 25% and the state tax rate is
10%, Bruce must solve
x=0.25[200,000-0.10(200,000-x)] 1 solutions

You can put this solution on YOUR website!For one thing you won't solve it as it is.
You copied wrong.
I am guessing it should be 2y+5x=12
Depends on the calculator read your manual.

Numbers_Word_Problems/255560: Choose the number that does not follow the pattern
40, 140, 239, 340
The answer is 239. Why? How do you solve this? 1 solutions
Answer 187782 by richwmiller(9144) on 2010-01-10 23:17:34 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!the pattern should be add 100
40, 140, 240, 340.
All the others end in 40
the difference between 40 and 140 is 100
the difference between 140 and 340 is 200
A lot of discovering patterns is luck but you also have to be open to patterns

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/255422: Two angles are complementary. The sum of the measure of the first angle and one-forth the second angle is 64.5 degree. Find the measures of the angles.
What is the measure of the smaller angle?
What is the measure of the other angle? 1 solutions
Answer 187751 by richwmiller(9144) on 2010-01-10 21:12:54 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!a+b=90
a+b/4=64.5
a=90-b
a=64.5-b/4
set the a's equal
90-b=64.5-b/4
35.5=3b/4
142=3b
142/3=b
34=b smaller angle
56=a larger angle
check
56+34/4=64.5
34/4=8.5
34=34

Answer 187749 by richwmiller(9144) on 2010-01-10 20:59:34 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!quadratic equation model
f(x)=ax^2+bx+c
plug in the values of to find ab and c
f(-2)=8
a(-2)^2+b(-2)+c=8
4a-2b-4=8
4a-2b=12
f(0)=-4
a(0)+b*0+c=-4
c=-4
f(4)=68
a(4)^2+b(4)-4=68
16a+4b=72
4a-2b=12
multiply the second by 2
16a+4b=72
