system of equations means more than one equation with the same variables.
There are three common ways of solving them.
graphing
substitution (find the value of one in terms of the other and substitute that for the one.) Sounds worse than it is.
elimination (adding , multiplying them )

Parallelograms/255640: If you have a parallelogram with two lines bisecting. with m+9.1 on one half of the bisector and 4k-3.5 on the other side. and on the other line there is 2.6k and m. How do you solve this without having to deal with 2 variables?

Answer 187873 by richwmiller(9144) About Me  on 2010-01-11 11:27:22 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let's look at what we know before we panic.
Since the line bisects it creates two equal parts.
m+9.1=4k-3.5
oh no we have one equation with two variables.
Stay calm; we aren't finished yet.
2.6k=m
Oh now we have two equations with two variables. So we can solve the two equations and find out where they intersect.
Well, look at that m=2.6k
We can substitute 2.6k for m in the first equation.
2.6k+9.1=4k-3.5
We now have one equation with one variable.
Panic attack avoided.
k=9
2.6k=m
2.6*(9)=m
23.4 = m
We can check.
23.4+9.1=4(9)-3.5
32.5=32.5
ok

Very interesting problem. Easy solution.
%28x%5E10%2Ay%5E%28-8%29%29%5E%28-3%29
The important thing to remember is negative exponent means the reciprocal.
3%5E%28-3%29 = 1%2F%283%5E3%29

1%2F3%5E%28-3%29 = 1%2F%281%2F%283%5E3%29%29=3%5E3
We have reciprocals of reciprocals in your problem.
%28x%5E2%29%5E5=x%5E10

so
%28x%5E10%2Ay%5E%28-8%29%29%5E%28-3%29=
1%2F%28x%5E10%2Ay%5E%28-8%29%29%5E3=
1%2F%28x%5E10%2Fy%5E%288%29%29%5E3=

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/255555: According to Bruce Harrell, CPA, the
federal income tax for a class C corporation is found by
solving a linear equation. The reason for the equation is that
the amount x of federal tax is deducted before the state tax
is figured, and the amount of state tax is deducted before
the federal tax is figured. To find the amount of federal tax
for a corporation with a taxable income of $200,000, for
which the federal tax rate is 25% and the state tax rate is
10%, Bruce must solve
x=0.25[200,000-0.10(200,000-x)]

I only buy spearmint candy canes now.
p+c=25
p*1+c*1.3=28
c=10 p=15
15+13=28

You can expect that the numerator is going to factor out to (x^2-2) or (x^2+2)
(x^4-8x^2+12)/(x^2-2)=(x^2-6)(x^2-2)/(x^2-2)=x^2-6

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/255505: (x^9+x^8)(x^9+x^8-x^7)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
multiply x^9 by the three terms
x^9*x^9+x^9*x^8-x^9*x^7
multiply x^8 by the three terms
x^8*x^9+x^8*x^8-x^*8*x^7

x^9*x^9+x^9*x^8-x^9*x^7+x^8*x^9+x^8*x^8-x^*8*x^7
now combine like terms
x^18+x^17-x^16+x^17+x^16-x^15
x^18+2x^17-x^15 or
factored x^15(x^3+2x^2-1)

2^3=8
2^2=4
2^1=2
2^3/2^1=2^2
8/2=4
what did I do with the exponents I subtracted them
to divide two like terms to powers
subtract he powers
v^9/v^5=v^4

you want to divide by 7x
14 is 7*2
35 is 7*5
7x*(2x^6-5x^2+5)/7x=2x^6-5x^2+5

It has to be less than 30 minutes since Arthur can do it alone in 30 minutes.
and Bonnie in 40 minutes so they should be able to do it in abt 17 minutes.
2x+1.5x+1x=1 hour
4.5x=60
x=60/4.5=600/45=13 minutes 20 seconds
