You can put this solution on YOUR website!Again no idea what you mean by "two order system"
j=m+5 and
2(j+10)-(m+10)=35 and
j+10=2m
j=20
m=15
We can solve by just using the first and last equations.
j=m+5
j+10=2m
m+5+10=2m
m+15=2m
15=m
j=20
Just for fun lets check using the unused equation
2(j+10)-(m+10)=35
2(30)-25=35
60-25=35
35=35
ok

Linear_Algebra/258778: 2x-4y=6
2x+y=1
my teacher said to solve this by using substitution but i keep getting the worng answer, help plz :)! 1 solutions
Answer 190489 by richwmiller(9143) on 2010-01-20 10:23:35 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!So what did you try?
What did you get?
2x-4y=6
2x+y=1
Substitution might be the harder way to solve this
Elimination would be
Subtract the two and get
-5y=5
y=-1
2x-1=1
2x=2
x=1
However we will do it by substitution.
Solve the second for y
y=1-2x
Substitute 1-2x for y in the first
2x-4(1-2x)=6
2x-4+8x=6
10x =10
x=1
y=1-2(1)
y=1-2
y=-1

Answer 190487 by richwmiller(9143) on 2010-01-20 10:17:05 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!p*c=180 and
(p-6)(c+1.5)=180
p=30 planned to go
c=6 original cost per person
p-6=24 went on trip
c+1.50=7.50 cost per person on trip

Now for your attempt
(4x+2y+z=7)4
2x+2y-4z=28
_____________
2x+2y=-4
16x+8y+28
(4x+2y+z=7) *4

| Solved by pluggable solver: Factoring using the AC method (Factor by Grouping) |
In order to factor , first multiply the leading coefficient 6 and the last term 3 to get 18. Now we need to ask ourselves: What two numbers multiply to 18 and add to -7? Lets find out by listing all of the possible factors of 18
Factors:
1,2,3,6,9,18,
-1,-2,-3,-6,-9,-18, List the negative factors as well. This will allow us to find all possible combinations
These factors pair up to multiply to 18.
1*18=18
2*9=18
3*6=18
(-1)*(-18)=18
(-2)*(-9)=18
(-3)*(-6)=18
note: remember two negative numbers multiplied together make a positive number
Now which of these pairs add to -7? Lets make a table of all of the pairs of factors we multiplied and see which two numbers add to -7
| First Number | | | Second Number | | | Sum | | 1 | | | 18 | || | 1+18=19 | | 2 | | | 9 | || | 2+9=11 | | 3 | | | 6 | || | 3+6=9 | | -1 | | | -18 | || | -1+(-18)=-19 | | -2 | | | -9 | || | -2+(-9)=-11 | | -3 | | | -6 | || | -3+(-6)=-9 |
None of these factors add to -7. So the quadratic cannot be factored. | |

Travel_Word_Problems/258414: Hello, This comes from Algebra and Trigonometry 4th edition book.I can't figure the formula needed when I don't have the speed of something already.
A Leisure Time Cruise riverboat travels 46 km downstream in 2 hr. It travels 51 km upstream in 3 hr. Find the speed of the boat and the speed of the plane.
Thank you for your help! 1 solutions
Answer 190228 by richwmiller(9143) on 2010-01-19 12:03:45 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!speed * time =distance
also written as r*t=d
We know the time and the distance
Surely, if I told you that I went 60 miles in one hour you would say that I went 60 mph.
x*1=60
x=60
or if I told you that I went 120 miles in 2 hours you would know I went 60 mph.
x*2=120
x=60 again
But something is wrong with your problem.
It says"Find the speed of the boat and the speed of the plane. "
There is no plane mentioned.
r*2=46
r=? You can solve this!
and the other
r*3=51
r=51/3=?
so it should current not plane the current is 3
20+3=23
20-3=17

Linear_Algebra/258389: Determine the shortest distance from (9,5) to 5x + 3y =15 1 solutions
Answer 190225 by richwmiller(9143) on 2010-01-19 11:36:33 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!I had to think a second about this one.
They are asking for the equation that for the line which passes through (9,5) and is perpendicular to 5x + 3y =15.
Then we need the intersection of the two lines and then the distance from the intersection to (9,5)
so find the slope of 5x + 3y =15
3y=15-5x
y=15/3-5x/3
m=-5/3
perpendicular slope would be 3/5
5=3/5(9)+b
25=27+5b
-2=5b
-2/5=b
y=3/5x-2/5
5x + 3y =15
5y=3x-2 and
3x-2=5y
3x-5y=2
5x+3y=15
9x-15y=6
25x+15y=75
34x=81
x = 81/34, y = 35/34
(9,5)
(81/34,35/34)
a^2+b^2=c^2
sqrt((9-81/34)^2 +(5-35/34)^2)=
7.7 units
Here are some other ways to do it. Some much shorter.

Money_Word_Problems/258380: On the first day, Joe joined a secret club as its only member. Each day after that, one more member joined than on the previous day. What was the membership of the club after 40 days?
((( I did this: 40 multiplied by 2 ; because it says each day after one more member joined than on the previous. So then I got 80 and added joe and got 81???))) 1 solutions

You can put this solution on YOUR website!day joined membership
0 0 0
1 1 1
2 2 3
3 3 6
4 4 10
5 5 15
6 6 21
7 7 28
8 8 36
9 9 45
10 10 55
11 11 66
12 12 78
13 13 91
The new total is the previous total plus the new day
#8 is 36 which is 1/2*8*9
#10 is 55 which is 1/2*10*11=55
#12 78 1/2 12*13=6*13
total = day*day+1*1/2
It also works with odd numbers
#11 11*12*1/2=66
so we have
t=d*(d+1)*1/2
t=40*41*1/2
t=20*41=820 after 40 days

You can put this solution on YOUR website!We jus t have to note the changes
-5+8-4
=-9+8=
=-1
There is one less on the books for the class than at the beginning.
-5+8=+3
But since 4 never showed, there are three more in class than at the beginning
