Equations/261931: I am trying to help my son with his homework and am stuck!
We need to find the solution for this problem:
2/c^2-2c + 1/2-c=1 1 solutions
Answer 193028 by richwmiller(9135) on 2010-01-27 18:07:27 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Please verify that is what it should be.
It is possible but unlikely that is the true equation
It is unusual to have c^2 in the denominator and it is also unusual to have -2c and -c in the same equation.
This equation will involve c^3 and have one real solution and two imaginary (complex) solutions.

1) bx - cx = -c How do I solve these? Thanks a lot!!!
2) 2/5 (x + 1) = g 1 solutions
Answer 193012 by richwmiller(9135) on 2010-01-27 17:35:30 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!1)
Can't be solved because there are three variables and only one equation.
We could solve for one of the variable in terms of another but you didn't ask for
that.
2)
Similar problem here two variables and only one equation.

Geometry_proofs/261883: The Question says:
Given: segment AB is parallel to segment DC;
segment BC is parallel to segment AE
Prove: BC/EA = BD/EB
I dont understand how to do proofs 1 solutions
Answer 193006 by richwmiller(9135) on 2010-01-27 17:21:45 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!You are going to have a fun time in Geometry if you don't know how to do proofs.
BTW one of the reasons for teaching geometry is to develop your ability to think logically. You have to learn how to think to do proofs.
Start with what you know and move on to what you didn't know step by step.
If you can't follow what I am saying there is not much point in explaining the problem.
I assume you are in the second semester of geometry now. It is a bit late to say you don't get proofs.
You have to bring together everything you should have learned about parallel lines and proportions.
I suspect there was a drawing that you neglected to mention.

Length-and-distance/261899: how do i do this and what is the answer? how many 3/4 foot pieces of string can be cut from a piece of string 4 1/2 feet long 1 solutions
Answer 192990 by richwmiller(9135) on 2010-01-27 16:55:40 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!remember that dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal
lets convert 4 1/2 to an improper fraction.9/2
9/2*4/3=3*2=6
We also could have used decimals.
4.5/.75
2*.75=1.5
6*.75=4.5

Linear-equations/261893: Write an equation in standard form using only integers for the line described.
A line parallel to 5x-7y=35 (6,1)
(the correct answer is 5x-7y=23) 1 solutions
Answer 192977 by richwmiller(9135) on 2010-01-27 16:37:45 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!5x-7y=23 is only one of many possible answers.
5x-7y=35
-7y=-5x+35
y=-5x/-7-5
y=5x/7-5
slope is 5/7
y=mx+b
1=5/7*6+b
1=30/7+b
1-30/7=b
-23/7=b
y=5x/7=23/7
We must use integers not fractions
7y=5x-23
23=5x-7y
5x-7y=23

Circles/261886: A light in a parking lot illuminates a circular area 15 meters across. What is the area of the parking lot covered by the light?
A=pie * r^
A=3.14(7.5)
A=23.55 sq. meters
Is this right? 1 solutions
Answer 192970 by richwmiller(9135) on 2010-01-27 16:22:16 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!You are making the same mistakes as last time plus one new one!
^ doesn't mean square
^2 is squared
^3 is cubed
^4 is to the fourth power
3.14 *7.5*7.5
This time you forgot to square the 7.5
which you should have written 3.14*7.5^2
and once again it is pi not pie!
so no it is not right!
3.14 *7.5*7.5
not 3.14 *7.5
You did learn to square the meters this time.

4*32=128. He can't afford a shirt that costs $32 on his salary. No wonder his mother takes half. He doesn't know how to shop!

Almost.
pi*r^2
not apple pie
and 3.14*10.5^2 not 3.14*10.5
also 3.14*10.5^2=346.2 ft^2 not feet
