1.8x + 1.2y = 4
9x + 6y = 3
i tried to solve this by multiplying the first equation by -5
-5(1.8x + 1.2y) = 4(-5)
-9x - 6y = -20
subtract the 2nd equation from the 1st
-9x - 6y = -20
9x + 6y = 3
I would say that there is no solution to this problem. Is this correct ? 1 solutions
Answer 205307 by richwmiller(9132) on 2010-03-19 10:05:50 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1.8x + 1.2y = 4
9x + 6y = 3
multiply first by -5
-9x-6y=-20
9x+6y=3
add both equations
0=-17
There are no solutions.
They are parallel
-a/b=slope
-1.8/1.2=-3/2
-9/6=-3/2
The slopes are the same

If a wholesaler buys 100 pounds of shrimp for x dollars, then what is the price per pound? 1 solutions
Answer 205263 by richwmiller(9132) on 2010-03-18 23:00:59 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!If I buy one pound for 1 dollar, what is the price per pound? 1 Dollar
Now if I buy 2 pounds for a dollar, what is the price per pound? 1/2 dollar
If I buy 5 pounds for 2 dollars what is the price per pound? 2/5 dollar (40 cents) per pound.
so 100 pounds for x dollars is x/100 dollars per pound

Linear-systems/282696: Please help me get started solving this equation:
4/3x + 2y = 6
I know you need to get a common denominator but I am not sure how this works with a fraction like 4/3x involved.... 1 solutions
Answer 205248 by richwmiller(9132) on 2010-03-18 22:29:13 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Sorry there is not one unique solution.
This is one equation with two variables (unknowns).
To solve we need one equation for each unknown.
To solve an equation means to find the value of the variables.
Now it appears that you don't really want to solve the equations but you want to know if the lines are parallel or perpendicular or neither.
What is the full original problem as given by the teacher or the book?
1/2x - y/3 = 2
4/3x + 2y = 6
They are not parallel. They do cross at x = 13/54, y = 3/13
Now the question is whether they are perpendicular.
For that we do need the slopes
we can find the slope when the equation is in the form y=mx+b
or while it is the standard form ax+by+c=0
They are both in standard form
first a=1/2 and b=-1/3
-a/b
-1/2/-1/3=-1/2*-3=3/2=slope
second
a=4/3 and b=2
-a/b=
-4/3/2=-4/3*1/2=-2/3 =slope
-2/3*3/2=-1
They are perpendicular since the product of the slopes is -1.

Linear-equations/282706: If i needed 2 points to be in Y intercept form, what would the answer be for (-5,2) and (4,1)?
y=mx+b should bt the form. Thanks. 1 solutions
Answer 205238 by richwmiller(9132) on 2010-03-18 22:12:43 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Your problem makes no sense.
Perhaps you mean
"If I have two points (-5,2) and (4,1), what is an equation in slope intercept form y=mx+b?"
y-y=m(x-x)
2-1=m(4-(-5))
1=m*9
m=1/9
y=mx+b
1=1/9*4+b
1=4/9+b
5/9=b
y=x/9+5/9

how do you solve this equation (4t-3)/5-(4-2t)/3=1 ?
3(4t-3)/15-5(4-2t)/15=1
NOT 12t-9-20+8t=15 because -5*-2t=+10t

If you can please guide me step by step what to do to solve this problem
I would really appreciated. 1 solutions
Answer 205181 by richwmiller(9132) on 2010-03-18 17:57:18 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Did this one a few days ago.
Odd integers between 10 and 20 are 11,13,15,17,19
so possible groups are
11,13,15
13,15,17
15,17,19
15 is not prime so can't be second nor third
that leaves only 15,17 19
so 15+17=32
