Expressions-with-variables/282798: solve for x and y.
1.8x + 1.2y = 4
9x + 6y = 3
i tried to solve this by multiplying the first equation by -5
-5(1.8x + 1.2y) = 4(-5)
-9x - 6y = -20
subtract the 2nd equation from the 1st
-9x - 6y = -20
9x + 6y = 3
I would say that there is no solution to this problem. Is this correct ?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

1.8x + 1.2y = 4
9x + 6y = 3
multiply first by -5
-9x-6y=-20
9x+6y=3
add both equations
0=-17
There are no solutions.
They are parallel
-a/b=slope
-1.8/1.2=-3/2
-9/6=-3/2
The slopes are the same

You can find the square roots of each side.
first we factor the left side.
(x+1)^2=9
x+1=-3
x=-4
x+1=3
x=2
x=(2,-4)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If I buy one pound for 1 dollar, what is the price per pound? 1 Dollar
Now if I buy 2 pounds for a dollar, what is the price per pound? 1/2 dollar
If I buy 5 pounds for 2 dollars what is the price per pound? 2/5 dollar (40 cents) per pound.
so 100 pounds for x dollars is x/100 dollars per pound

Sorry there is not one unique solution.
This is one equation with two variables (unknowns).
To solve we need one equation for each unknown.
To solve an equation means to find the value of the variables.
Now it appears that you don't really want to solve the equations but you want to know if the lines are parallel or perpendicular or neither.
What is the full original problem as given by the teacher or the book?
1/2x - y/3 = 2
4/3x + 2y = 6
They are not parallel. They do cross at x = 13/54, y = 3/13
Now the question is whether they are perpendicular.
For that we do need the slopes
we can find the slope when the equation is in the form y=mx+b
or while it is the standard form ax+by+c=0
They are both in standard form
first a=1/2 and b=-1/3
-a/b
-1/2/-1/3=-1/2*-3=3/2=slope
second
a=4/3 and b=2
-a/b=
-4/3/2=-4/3*1/2=-2/3 =slope
-2/3*3/2=-1
They are perpendicular since the product of the slopes is -1.

Solved by pluggable solver: SOLVE quadratic equation with variable
Quadratic equation ax%5E2%2Bbx%2Bc=0 (in our case 19x%5E2%2B-7x%2B5+=+0) has the following solutons:

x%5B12%5D+=+%28b%2B-sqrt%28+b%5E2-4ac+%29%29%2F2%5Ca

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant b%5E2-4ac should not be a negative number.

First, we need to compute the discriminant b%5E2-4ac: b%5E2-4ac=%28-7%29%5E2-4%2A19%2A5=-331.

The discriminant -331 is less than zero. That means that there are no solutions among real numbers.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(n^2+8n+15)/(n^2-25)=(n+5)*(n+3)/(n+5)*(n-5)=
(n+3)/(n-5)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(x+7)^2=169
we are dealing with length so we need real roots
x+7=13
x=6
check
(6+7)^2=169
ok

Did this one a few days ago.
Odd integers between 10 and 20 are 11,13,15,17,19
so possible groups are
11,13,15
13,15,17
15,17,19
15 is not prime so can't be second nor third
that leaves only 15,17 19
so 15+17=32

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
4x/10=3y/10
multiply by ten
4x=3y
we want to know x/y
x/y=3/4=.75=75%
