Surface-area/284644: Hi, my question is that what is the surface area of a box five feet long, three feet wide, and seven feet high? 1 solutions
Answer 206495 by richwmiller(9132) on 2010-03-23 21:26:01 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!how would you find any surface area? How about the surface area of rectangle?
A box has 6 surfaces.
top bottom are the same
the ends are the same
and the sides are the same.
so that is three different surfaces twice each

You can put this solution on YOUR website!It is matter of testing them
better your time than mine.
just plug in the given x's and y's and see if the results fit the inequality
if they do then they are part of the solution set.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!This problem has nothing to do with consecutive numbers little to do with numbers at all.
It is not a word problem and it is written poorly. Rewrite with many parentheses. It could have a million different meanings

Triangles/284564: One angle of a triangle is a right angle. The third angle is three times the smallest angle. what are their measures?
I have tried setting up an equation:
180= 90 + 3x + x
--------
-90
90= 3x + x
-------
3
30= x
but it didn't work because if this answer is substituted back in it doesn't work. I'm not sure if i just solved the equation wrong or if it is the wrong equation all together.
If you can help me it will be greatly appreshiated:) 1 solutions

You can put this solution on YOUR website!You were good up to
90=3x+x
you divided the 90 by 3 and 3x by 3 but you forgot the other x
anyways it was the wrong move
90=3x+x
add 3x+x to get 4x
90=4x
now divide by 4

You can put this solution on YOUR website!plug 3 in for x and find y
plug 4 in for x and find y
plug 1 in for x and find y
you actually only need two points to find your line so the third point is to check that you did all three correctly.

Rate-of-work-word-problems/284590: John can type 2/3 of a manuscript in 12 hours. If Laura and John work together, they can type the entire manuscript in 2 hours. If Laura worked alone, how long would it take her to type the manuscript? 1 solutions
Answer 206467 by richwmiller(9132) on 2010-03-23 20:18:08 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!John is obviously not much of a typist and should just hire Laura to do it.
John will take 18 hours to type the thing by himself.
2/18+2/L=1
2L+36=18L
36=16L
9=4L
9/4=L
2 1/4=L
2.25=L
1/9+2/2.25=1
1/9+8/9=1
Laura does 8/9 of the work and John does 1/9 and most of his is probably errors.
Laura can do it alone in 2 hours 15 minutes.

Solve the problem.
After two years on the job, an engineer's salary was $45,000. After seven years on the job, her salary was $60,000. Let y represent her salary after x years on the job. Percentage-and-ratio-word-problems/284538: Hello! I would really like if you could help me with this problem. We have to turn 34/42 into a decimal then into a percent. I tried to multiply 42(the denominator) till i got 100, but 42 doesn't go into 100 so i tried multiplying till i got a number that can go into 200 300 400... but 42 doesn't go into those numbers either. Can you help? thanks for reading this -S 1 solutions
Answer 206439 by richwmiller(9132) on 2010-03-23 18:18:30 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!to get the decimal you divide 42 into 34 and no it doesn't go evenly
you could reduce 34/42=17/21 to make it a little easier (but not much) to divide 21 into 17
then take that decimal and multiply it by 100 to get percent.
it should be at least .xxx places

Linear-equations/284532: this is a question in my 8th grade Pre algebra class that i don't understand: If an athlete runs 1 mile in 6 minutes, 2 miles in 12 minutes, and 3 miles in 18 minutes. Does the athlete run at a linear rate? Explain your reasoning. 1 solutions
Answer 206437 by richwmiller(9132) on 2010-03-23 18:13:14 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!first you have to understand what linear rate means.
Linear means it make a line.
If you plot (1,6) (2,12) (3,18) will it make a line.
Try it.
the formula for a line is y=mx+b
in this case b=0
and m =6
y=6x
try them
6=6*1
12=6*2
18=6*3
so yes it is linear

Money_Word_Problems/284400: The revenue achieved by selling x graphing calculators is figured to be x(32-0.2x) dollars. The cost of each calculator is $16. How many graphing calculators must be sold to make a profit (revenue - cost) of at least $307.20? 1 solutions
Answer 206385 by richwmiller(9132) on 2010-03-23 12:59:09 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!revenue-cost=profit
x(32-.2x)-16x=307.20
x=32 and 48
the max will be at 40
There is obviously something wrong with the formula if the same profit is made at 32 and 48 pieces
