Rectangles/286079: How do I measure the area of a rectangle 400 inches squared?

1 solutions

Answer 207429 by richwmiller(9144) About Me  on 2010-03-28 11:36:35 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
area=400 in^2
L*W=400
We can't know both length and width for sure.
WE can find values that work.
20*20 is a square with area 400
10*40 is a rectangle with area 400
2*200 is a rectangle with area 400

Age_Word_Problems/285999: Cathy has six pairs of black socks and six pairs of white socks in her drawer.In complete darkness, and without looking, how many socks must she take from the drawer in order to be sure to get a pair tha match?
1 solutions

Answer 207413 by richwmiller(9144) About Me  on 2010-03-28 09:24:09 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Well this is an interesting problem because Cathy has to turn on the lights eventually to find out if she actually has a pair of socks or not.
6 pair of white=12 white
6 pair black=12 black
if she pulls one white then one black she doesn't have a pair.
if she pulls one black and then one white she does not have a pair.
but the next sock will make a pair either a black pair or white pair.
But what good will it do her since she most likely has only two feet and will have three socks.
So after she has the three socks she has to turn on the lights to see which two actually do match.

5 x and 13 is a classic 5,12,13 right triangle.
but we aren't told where the right angle is
the legs might be 5 and 13.
we aren't told where angle L is either.
So there isn't enough info to pin it down though I am betting on 5,12,13
Since there is right angles we can pin it down to a few sides.
5^2+13^2=h^2
25+169=h^2
194=h^2
h=sqrt(194)=abt 13.9
so we could use sin cos and tan to find angle L if we knew where it was.

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/285968: I am still very confused on how to simplify rational expressions: This is the problem I am working on

Answer 207359 by richwmiller(9144) About Me  on 2010-03-27 20:37:49 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The best way to write this for us is
(x-4)/(x^2-3x-4)
This way clarifies for us exactly what is the numerator and what is the denominator
To make it look nice surround it by 3 { and 3}
%28x-4%29%2F%28x%5E2-3x-4%29
My guess just looking at it would be that x-4 might be a factor of (x^2-3x-4)
so we are looking for factors of -4 which add up to -3,
-4 and 1 work
(x-4)*(x+1)= (x^2-3x-4)
(x-4)/(x^2-3x-4) =
(x-4)/x-4)*(x+1)=
1/x+1

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/285958: I do not get how to Simplify the rational expression.
This is the problem I am working on: x+4/x^2+2x-8
The answers must be A. 1/x-2, B. 4/x+2, C. x-2 or D. x/x-2
I am pretty sure it can't be D but other than that I am lost on how to simplify the expression.

You need to either divide (x-2) or (x+4) into x^2+2x-8
or factor x^2+2x-8
we are looking for factors of -8 which add up +2
4 -2 fit the bill
(x+4)/(x^2+2x-8)=(x+4)/(x+4)(x-2)=1/(x-2)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x^2 -5x -3 =0
x^2 -5x =3
(5/2)^2=25/4
3=12/4
x^2-5x+25/4=3+25/4
(x-5/2)^2=37/4
x=5/2-sqrt(37/4)
x=5/2+sqrt(37/4)
c=1/2(5-sqrt(37))
d=1/2(5+sqrt(37))
Solved by pluggable solver: SOLVE quadratic equation with variable
Quadratic equation ax%5E2%2Bbx%2Bc=0 (in our case 1x%5E2%2B-5x%2B-3+=+0) has the following solutons:

x%5B12%5D+=+%28b%2B-sqrt%28+b%5E2-4ac+%29%29%2F2%5Ca

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant b%5E2-4ac should not be a negative number.

First, we need to compute the discriminant b%5E2-4ac: b%5E2-4ac=%28-5%29%5E2-4%2A1%2A-3=37.

Discriminant d=37 is greater than zero. That means that there are two solutions: +x%5B12%5D+=+%28--5%2B-sqrt%28+37+%29%29%2F2%5Ca.

x%5B1%5D+=+%28-%28-5%29%2Bsqrt%28+37+%29%29%2F2%5C1+=+5.54138126514911
x%5B2%5D+=+%28-%28-5%29-sqrt%28+37+%29%29%2F2%5C1+=+-0.54138126514911

Quadratic expression 1x%5E2%2B-5x%2B-3 can be factored:
1x%5E2%2B-5x%2B-3+=+1%28x-5.54138126514911%29%2A%28x--0.54138126514911%29
Again, the answer is: 5.54138126514911, -0.54138126514911. Here's your graph:
graph%28+500%2C+500%2C+-10%2C+10%2C+-20%2C+20%2C+1%2Ax%5E2%2B-5%2Ax%2B-3+%29

let's call the roots c and d
so the new equation will have x^2 and y^2 as there roots
(a-c^2)*(b-d^2)=0
ab-bc^2-ad^2+c^2d^2=0
plug these in .
c=1/2(5-sqrt(37))
d=1/2(5+sqrt(37))

That's funny. she won't be paying any interest and won't be paying back the $5000 either. Don't do business with relatives.

At least you found the right category!
Did you look for similar problems or a lesson?
what letters should we use for jet and wind?
(j+w)*t=2500
(j-w)*t=1900
Knock yourself out.
j=450
we could solve both equations for t and set them equal.
(j+w)*t=2500
(j-w)*t=1900
t=2500/(450+w)
t=1900/(450-w)
2500/(450+w)=1900/(450-w)
w=675/11= abt 61.36
