It travels a rate of 60 mi/h. A second truck leaves the same dock an hour later and travels the same route at 75 mi/h. How long will it take the second truck to catch up the first truck? 1 solutions
Answer 209292 by richwmiller(9135) on 2010-04-05 18:09:37 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!you obviously have not looked for similar problems. I already did 2 others today.
the first truck has an hour head start. So he goes 60 miles in that hour.
the second truck gains on the first truck at 15 mph
60/15=4
so it will take 4 hours to catch up.
But they will both get arrested since the national speed limit is still 55.
60*(t+1)=75t
60t+60=75t
60=15t
60/15=t
t= 4hours

Travel_Word_Problems/288779: You are driving from Houston to San Antonio on Interstate 10. You travel half the distance at 50 km/h and the other half at 92 km/h. What is your average speed(km/h)? 1 solutions
Answer 209285 by richwmiller(9135) on 2010-04-05 17:54:17 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!s=distance to San Antonio
50x=s/2
x=s/100
92y=s/2
y=s/184
d/t=r
(total distance)/(total time)=average rate
 =64.79 kph
not (92+50)/2
not 142/2=71
Why? Because he spent more time at 50 kph than at 92 kph

Travel_Word_Problems/288775: Sandy leaves a town traveling in her car at a rate of 45 miles per hour. One hour later, Monica leaves the same town traveling the same route at a rate of 50 miles per hour. How long will it take monica to overtake sandy? 1 solutions
Answer 209270 by richwmiller(9135) on 2010-04-05 16:36:37 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!In the hour head start Sandy went 45 miles.
Monica will be gaining 5 miles an hour
45/5=9
It will take Monica 9 hours without her cell phone to catch up to Sandy.
45*(t+1)=50t
45t+45=50t
45=5t
45/5=t
9=t

Parallelograms/288770: The perimeter of a parallelogram is 54 centimeters. The ratio of the lengths of the sides is 2:7. What are the lengths of the sides? 1 solutions
Answer 209268 by richwmiller(9135) on 2010-04-05 16:31:36 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!2+7=9
9 parts
2w+2l=54
2(w+l)=54
w+l=27
27/9=3
2*3=6
7*3=21
6/21=2/7
6 cm and 21 cm are the lengths.
check
6+6=12
21+21=42
12+42=54
ok

Rate-of-work-word-problems/288771: A father and son are digging a garden that is 7 feet long and 5 feet wide. The father, working alone, can dig the garden in 3 hours. The son can do the job in 4 hours. If they both work together, how long would the two need to complete the task? (Round your answer to the nearest tenth.) 1 solutions
Answer 209265 by richwmiller(9135) on 2010-04-05 16:26:05 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!There is more info than needed. We don't need the measurements of the garden.
x/3+x/4=1
4x+3x=12
7x=12
x=12/7
They can complete the job in 12/7 hours
12/7 = 1 5/7=1hour and 43 minutes= 1.7 hours
Dad will do 4/7 and son will do 3/7 of the job

Numeric_Fractions/288769: how do you simplify 4 times 13 plus 12 divided by 3 1 solutions
Answer 209262 by richwmiller(9135) on 2010-04-05 16:13:21 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Try writing it in math talk.
Use +,-,/ and *
Wrap the different operations in parentheses.
Is it 4 times (13 plus 12)?
or (4 times 13) plus 12?
and what divided by 3? Everything or just the 12? Wrap the numerator in parentheses

Rate-of-work-word-problems/288764: Melanie can paint a certain barn by herself in x days. Her helper Melissa can paint the same barn by herself in 2x days. Write a rational expression for the fraction of the barn that they complete in one day by working together. Evaluate the expression for x=5. 1 solutions
Answer 209257 by richwmiller(9135) on 2010-04-05 16:04:52 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!y/x+y/2x=1
2y+y=2x
3y=2x
y=2x/3
It will take them 2x/3 days together
so in one day they will complete 1/2x/3 or 3/(2x) of the job
y/5+y/10=1
2y+y=10
3y=10
y=10/3
in one day they will complete 1/10/3=1*3/10=3/10 of the job in one day
check
2x/3=10/3
2x=10
x=5
ok

Linear-equations/288740: how do you get the x- intercept of y=5/4x-2..........i got a slope of 5/4 and i got an x-intercept of (4/5,0) the x-intercept doesn't sound right to me can you help me??? thanks 1 solutions
Answer 209250 by richwmiller(9135) on 2010-04-05 15:27:45 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!You are right. It is not (4/5,0)
The x intercept is when y=0
0=5x/4-2
2=5x/4
8=5x
8/5=x
(8/5,0)
Are you sure you want the x intercept and not the y intercept?

Travel_Word_Problems/288624: Bob travels on a train at 80 mph with a 30 minute layover halfway through the 156 mile trip at 8:00a.m. or by car traveling 55 mph at 8:00a.m. traveling 156 miles. Which method of transportation train or car allows Bob to arrive sooner at his destination? 1 solutions
Answer 209196 by richwmiller(9135) on 2010-04-05 09:54:19 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!There really isn't enough info to decide the real answer.
Where is the car? Where is the train station?
by train
80x=156
x=(156/80)*60+30
147 minutes
2 hr 27 minutes
by car
55*t=156
t=156/55)
(156/55)*60=170.1=2 hr 50 minutes
that is only a matter of 23 minutes
How far away is the train station? How would he get there?

Answer 209184 by richwmiller(9135) on 2010-04-05 08:40:31 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!x^2 - 2x =24
x^2-2x-24=0
you want factors of -24 which add up to -2
one will be positive and one negative.
what are the factors of -24
-1 24
-24 1
-2 12
-12 2
-3 8
-8 3
-4 6
-6 4
They begin to repeat.
which of the above factors add up to -2

Exponents/288610: I have a question about the remaining factors.
If you have an equation of x^3+5x^2=2x-8 how do you find the remaining factors, if you know that one factor of the equation is (x+4)?
I tried out some problems, and figured out the remaining factors should be either (x+1),(x-2) or the remaining factors should be: (x-1),(x+2)........or am I wrong completely wrong?
And, could you please show me the way on HOW to figure this out? Thank you 1 solutions
Answer 209176 by richwmiller(9135) on 2010-04-05 08:27:26 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!The equation that you gave us x^3+5x^2=2x-8 does not have (x+4) as a factor.
I suspect you copied something wrong.
My best guess is that it isn't an equation at all and the = should be +
So here it is
(x^3+5x^2+2x-8)/(x+4)=
x^2+x-2=
(x-1)*(x+2)
