You can put this solution on YOUR website!It doesn't matter which method you use.
x^2 goes into x^4 --x^2 times
because x^2*x^2=x^4
quotient is x^2-4 with a remainder of 5x-4
so it is x^2-4+(5x-4)/(x^+1)

Linear-equations/290094: What is the inherent meaning and justification of cross-multiplication as it applies to solving an inequality? 1 solutions
Answer 209952 by richwmiller(9135) on 2010-04-08 19:02:41 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Cross multiplication used to be frowned on by teachers because you aren't obviously doing the same thing to both sides.
3/4=x/7
The proper way is to
multiply both sides by 4
3*4/4=x*4/7
3=4x/7
then multiply both sides by 7
3*7=4x*7/7
simplify
3*7=4x
but with cross multiplication we skip the step of showing that we multiply one side by each number.
3/4=x/7
we jump right to the result
3*7=4x
It is shorter and therefore preferred by students.
However there is more chance of errors and not really understanding what you are doing and why.

Length-and-distance/290063: You walk 100 yards due south, then 120 yards due west, and then 20 yards due north. How far are you from your starting point? 1 solutions
Answer 209948 by richwmiller(9135) on 2010-04-08 18:51:15 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!You really should draw a picture of this to understand the problem.

draw a line from B to C to finish the rectangle
a=BC is 120 yards
b=AC 100-20=80 yards
c=AB is the hypotenuse of the triangle ABC
a^2+b^2=c^2
120^2+80^2=c^2
c=40sqrt(13)
c=144.22 yards

Travel_Word_Problems/290075: A passenger jet travels from Los Angeles to Bombay, India, in 22hr. The return flight takes 17h. a. Write an equation that represents the area of the enclosure.
b. if you solved for y, what would be the new equation?
c. If L stands for the ength of the fence, in yards, write an equation that represents the length of fencing that you need,
d. If you substituted your equation from part b into your equation in part c, then L will result in a rational function. Express L as a rational function.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!x=0,y=-2,z=3
add #2 and #3
subtract that result from #1
you should now have just y and z in that equation
multiply #2 by-2
add that to #3
you should have another with just y and z
now you should be able to solve those two for y and z
