This involves a lot of grunt work.
x-3.1y=8.8 and 9x-9y=-37
x=8.8+3.1y
9x-9y=-37
Plug that in for x and have fun.
x=-10.2593, y=-6.14815

Let's call her investment x.
5% of x is $110
.05*x=110
5x/100=110
x/20=110
x=20*110
I will leave the final multiplication for you.
Why should I have all the fun?

Divisibility_and_Prime_Numbers/305634: What is the reasoning behind the division of fractions? For example, what does it mean to divide 1/2 by 2/3? Note: I'm not looking for the algorithm or the rule for generating the correct answer but rather the explanation of what it means.

Well let's take a slightly different problem that can be easily expressed in decimal format.
1/2 divided by 3/4
.50/.75
multiply by 100
50/75
factor out 25
2/3
What just happened.
We want to know how many times 3/4 can go into 1/2
Well it can't go a complete time because 3/4 is larger than 1/2
the ratio holds true for 50/75
How many times can 75 go into 50 it can't one whole time. It can go 2/3 of 1 time?
But what is interesting to me about this problem and yours is how we resolve the problem using fractions.
(1/2)/(2/3)=1/2*3/2=/3/4
and
(1/2) /(3/4) = 1/2*4/3=4/6=2/3 as we learned before.
We used the reciprocals to multiply rather than divide.

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/305461: Please help me solve this word problem. I am very confused and it is a new topic. If you could not only give me an answer, but also include steps it would be greatly appreciated.
Boat x sails due south from a pier. Boat Y sails due west from the same pier at the same time. Both sail at a constant speed. Boat x is sailing 2 miles per hour faster than Boat y. After one hour they are 8 miles apart. What is the speed of boat x in miles per hour?

Word problems are meant to confuse you.
Who in their right mind could imagine that a math student would be able to read and do math?
If one boat goes south and another boat goes west, how could you figure out the distance between them?
look at a map. or draw n on the top of your paper. s on the bottom w on the left side and e on the right side
start in the middle. draw a line going west
go back the starting point in the middle. draw a line going south.
now connect the two end points. label that part 8
What did you draw ? a circle, rectangle or triangle?
What is special about it?
look at the angle in the middle.
What is the formula for distance?
rate (speed) times time =distance
r*t=d
time we are told is one hour
t=1
boat x is going x mph for one hour
boat y is going y mph for 1 hour
x=y+2
distance =1*(y+2)
distance =1*y
y^2+(y+2)^2=8^2
why?
y is the speed of boat y
y+2 is the speed of boat x
You will solve the equation for y but the question asks for x so add 2 to y to get x
Have fun.

Probability-and-statistics/305429: 3. You are visiting Dad’s Root Beer Plant in Oakland. In the past, the equipment was assumed to be not working properly if the cans were over-filled or under-filled. You observe the machine filling 9 bottles and collected the data. You are 95% sure that the machine is filling the bottles correctly. The amount dispersed is assumed to be normally distributed: (T-test)
