You can put this solution on YOUR website!As thorough as Edwin's answer is you don't have time on a test to go through all of that. On a test, you want the quickest solution.
Of course Stan's method is the quickest.
So let's say you didn't know Stan's method (Edwin's method1)
We know we are going to lose time compared to method 1
It only involves a little multiplication and subtraction.
Quickly try 1 for n in each. We see it has to be negative 23
a)38-61=-23
b)61-24=positive so move on.
c)61-84=-23
d) -46
so it is between a and c
try it for n=2 we need positive 38
76-61=15
122-84=38
that settles it
Answer is c

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/309438: I got this equation so far for this problem but I am at a loss on how to solve it. Here is the word problem:
Your business has the copy machine break down. After having it repaired, you receive a bill for a total of $140 for 8 hours of work. The bill is itemized to show that the full-time mechanic was paid $50 and the part-time mechanic was paid $90. There was more than one thing wrong and you opted to have the easy thing fixed by the parttime mechanic who earns $10 less per hour than the full-time mechanic. How many hours did each worker spend fixing the copier?
My equation began with fulltime xt=50 and parttime (x-10)(8t)=90.
How do I solve this equation? 1 solutions
Answer 221336 by richwmiller(9135) on 2010-05-28 16:46:01 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!a+b=8
a=8-b
x*a+y*b=140
a*x=90
b*y=50
y=50/b
x=y-10
x*a+y*b=140
(50/b-10)(8-b)+50=140
b=2
b=20
a+20=8
a=-12 discard
b=20 discard
a+2=8
a=6
a = 6, b = 2, x = 15, y = 25

Linear-systems/309466: Im REALLY stuck on this Algebra Equasion, Please Help Me!!!
I have these 2 formulas
12-x^2 -2xy = 0
...12-y^2 - 2xy = 0
...
for some reason x and y are both 2
how do you get this
i tried and got
y= 6/x -0.5x tried to sub into second one but gets messy any way to do this on a calculator by any chance but i want to know how to do it algebraically hmmmmm........ 1 solutions
Answer 221322 by richwmiller(9135) on 2010-05-28 16:01:15 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!What would happen if you set them equal to each other since they both equal zero
12-x^2 -2xy=12-y^2 - 2xy
add 2xy to both sides
12-x^2=12-y^2
subtract 12
-x^2=-y^2
multiply by -1
x^2=y^2
so we know that x=y
12-x^2-2xy=0
12-x^2-2x^2=0
12-3x^2=0
12=3x^2
4=x^2
x=+-2
solutions are
(2,2)
(-2,-2)
now check them to make sure they both work.

Quadratic equation (in our case ) has the following solutons:

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant should not be a negative number.
First, we need to compute the discriminant : .
Discriminant d=16 is greater than zero. That means that there are two solutions: .

Quadratic expression can be factored:
