Travel_Word_Problems/456093: The speed of a stream is 4 miles per hour. If a boat travels 46 miles downstream in the same amount of time it takes to travel 123 miles upstream, what is the speed of the boat in still water? 1 solutions
Answer 313088 by richwmiller(9135) on 2011-05-31 22:47:53 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!r*t=d
I think you have up and downstream reversed
downstream is with the current
but it can't be.
(r-4)*t=46
(r+4)*t=123
r = 676/77, t = 77/8
r=8.77922, t=9.625

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/456068: 3/c-4 = c-1/c-4
Please solve that rational equation using cross multiplication and lowest common denominator...
I see that c-4 is the common denominator but do you still have to multiply by c-4? 1 solutions
Answer 313069 by richwmiller(9135) on 2011-05-31 21:46:23 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!No need to cross multiply.
It is like having 3/x=(c-1)/x
so 3=c-1
c=4
but c cannot equal 4 since it would make c-4=0
and we can't define division by zero
so there is no solution.

Answer 312961 by richwmiller(9135) on 2011-05-31 15:03:02 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!r*t=d
r*x=59
(r-5)*y=17
x+y=4
three equations three unknowns
discard negative answers
r = 1/2 (24+sqrt(281)), x = -2/5 (sqrt(281)-24), y = 2/5 (sqrt(281)-14)
x=2.89478, y=1.10522
r=20.3815 first part
r=15.3815 second part

You can put this solution on YOUR website!m=12b
m=6s
a=b+s
f=4a
m=f
Not enough info to pin it down to only one answer.
in terms of a
b = a/3, f = 4a, m = 4a, s = (2a)/3
in terms of b
a = 3b, f = 12b, m = 12b, s = 2b
If brother is 6 then
You are 18
father is 72
mother is 72
sister is 12
If brother is 2 then
You are 6
father is 24
mother is 24
sister is 4
