test/551139: The tens digit of a certain two digit number is two more than the units digit. The original number is 18 more than the number formed by interchanging the digits. What is the original number? Please help me solve this!!!! 1 solutions
Answer 359459 by richwmiller(9144) on 2011-12-30 17:34:48 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!x=2+y
10x+y=18+10y+x which reduces to
y=x-2 which is equivalent to x=2+y
so any x (tens digit) that is 2 more than y (units digit) will work
97=79+18
86=68+18
75=57+18
64=46+18
53=35+18
42=24+18
31=13+18

Geometry_Word_Problems/549622: freddy the cat is stuck in a tree, his owner has a ladder that that is 20 feet long. If the owner places the ladder 3 feet away from the tree, how high up is freddy? 1 solutions
Answer 357914 by richwmiller(9144) on 2011-12-21 16:38:41 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!not enough info.
We don't know if the ladder is too short, just reaches or is too long.
Assuming that it just reaches,20 is the hypotenuse and 3 is one side.
3^2+a^2=20^2
9+a^2=400
a^2=391
a=sqrt(391)
a=19.77

Graphs/549235: find an equation of a line in standard form that has x intercept 6 and y intercept 4 1 solutions
Answer 357548 by richwmiller(9144) on 2011-12-19 22:40:07 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!x intercept means y=0 and here x=6 point (6,0)
y intercept means x=0 and here y=4 point (0,4)
find the equation of a line with these two points.
I hope you see that mananth's answer is wrong.
y=mx+b
m=-2/3 is correct but we already know that y=4 is the y intercept not -4
so
y=-2x/3+4 not -4

Rectangles/547712: how many rectangles can you make with a perimeter of 12 sq cm? and the area of each 1 solutions
Answer 356561 by richwmiller(9144) on 2011-12-15 10:48:18 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!There are no rectangles with a perimeter of 12 sq cm because perimeters are not measured in square units.
If the perimeter were 12 cm, the answer would be an infinite number of rectangles can have a perimeter of 12 cm. and the area would be Area=L*W while 2L+2W=12.

Quadratic_Equations/544108: Use the quadratic formula to solve the equation.
5x^2 + 12x + 3 = 0
here is what I have tried
5x^2+12x=-3
12/2 = 6^2 = 36
5x^2+12x+36=-3+36
5x^2+12x+36=33
factor
5(x+6)(x+6)=33
5(x+6)^2=33
5x+180=33
5x=-147
5x/5=-147/5
