Finance/461380: Is there such a symbol as an upside down question mark? Used maybe in loans or mortage or interest. And so, what is it used for? Can you provide an example?
Thanks,
Remi 1 solutions
Answer 316409 by richard1234(5390) on 2011-06-15 15:41:53 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Loans can be considered "upside down" but I rarely see upside down question marks used to describe them (you should Google it). The only use I have seen from an upside down question mark is when one is asking a question in Spanish. But yes, there is such a symbol as an upside down question mark.

Probability-and-statistics/461206: Twenty seven students averaged 70 on their midterm. Could 15 of them score above 90? Explain 1 solutions
Answer 316403 by richard1234(5390) on 2011-06-15 15:03:09 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! If 27 students averaged 70, then the total score is 27*70 = 1890. If 15 of them score above 90, this total score must be at least 1350. It is possible for the other 12 to score below 540, so 15 of them scoring above 90 is a possibility.

Graphs/461084: I need to create an equation of a nonlinear function. I don't know what this is. Can you please give me an example? Thanks so much. 1 solutions
Answer 316316 by richard1234(5390) on 2011-06-15 00:36:37 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!A nonlinear equation is not necessarily something raised to a power; it is simply an equation that is not represented by a line.
In addition to polynomial curves, the following functions are non-linear:
Trigonometric function
f(x) = sin(x)
f(x) = tan(x)
Logarithmic or exponential function
f(x) = ln x
Of course there are countless other examples.

Pythagorean-theorem/461155: GIVEN A TRIANGLE ABC WHERE THE VALUE OF BC^2 =370 UNITS AC^2 =74 AND AB^2=116 CALCULATE THE AREA OF A TRIANGLE /
HINT; 370=9^2+17^2,74 = 5^2+7^2 AND 116 =4^2+10^2 1 solutions
Answer 316310 by richard1234(5390) on 2011-06-15 00:24:00 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Please refrain from caps lock...it gives the impression you are shouting your question.
We could attempt to find one of the angles using the law of cosines, then find the area using two sides and the in-between angle. However, this gets ugly, plus there is a way to take advantage of the "hint."
We can plot the triangle on a Cartesian plane instead, such that it satisfies the requirements:
We see that, from the Pythagorean theorem, AC^2 = 7^2 + 5^2, etc.
To find the area of ABC, create a rectangle with sides parallel to the axes and with diagonal BC:
Next, we just subtract off areas from the big triangle. The area (denote by [ABC]) of triangle ABC is:
The coordinates are all lattice points, so the areas are easy to evaluate.

Graphs/461147: How do you graph a function (hyperbola, ellipse, rational etc.) without using a graphing calculator? 1 solutions
Answer 316301 by richard1234(5390) on 2011-06-14 23:34:37 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!First determine whether the function is a hyperbola or ellipse or step value function or whatever it could be. Then, find any distinguishing points on the function (for a polynomial it could be max. or min values, for a rational function it could be asymptotes, for an ellipse it could be points on the major/minor axes, etc.). If you are graphing a rational function with multiple asymptotes, it helps to know whether the asymptote is reached from the bottom or top (it might help to know how to find limits first). For an ellipse or circle, know the center and radius or axes.

Rational-functions/460833: what are radical expressions? What is the process we follow when adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing radical expressions? In your answer, demonstrate the process for each one with your own example 1 solutions
Answer 316298 by richard1234(5390) on 2011-06-14 23:26:56 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Radical expressions are pretty self-explanatory, expressions with radicals in them. The process is quite similar to adding other things, but you have to make sure you add like terms and know when to simplify such an expression. For example,
(I picked an example that would use all four arithmetic operations and would simplify easily).
We multiply to get which is equal to . The quantity is equal to . Thus the entire expression is equal to
(all terms are like so we add their coefficients).

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/460217: Short Answer. The length of the side of a rectangular desk is given by x - 4y cm. The length of the front is given by x + 4y cm. What is an algebraic expression for the area of the top of the rectangular desk? Include correct units as part of your answer. 1 solutions
Answer 316294 by richard1234(5390) on 2011-06-14 23:17:10 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Area = length*width = (x-4y)(x+4y). This resembles the difference of two squares so we conclude that the area is x^2 - 16y^2 square cm.

Probability-and-statistics/460400: I have my Algebra 1 Exam. Its worth 70% of my grade, 50 questions. If my total average for the year is a C- , is it possible that if i do good on the exam it will be raised to a C? If so , what would i have to get on the exam? I need a 75 percent or higher average in the class. My grades were : C- , C- , D , and now im at A D+ 1 solutions
Answer 316293 by richard1234(5390) on 2011-06-14 23:16:09 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! You're a little unclear, is your year-to-date average a C- or a D+?
Regardless, if the test accounts for 70% of your final grade, that's a huge chunk. Even a grade of 80% should raise your overall grade to a 75%. Aim for a higher percentage grade to be safe.

Linear_Equations_And_Systems_Word_Problems/461134: Consider the system y=a and x=b where a and b are real numbers. Is this system dependent or independent? Is it consistent or inconsistent? Describe the system. If it is consistent, what is the solution? 1 solutions
Answer 316292 by richard1234(5390) on 2011-06-14 23:11:52 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!I am not entirely familiar with the vocabulary since I never learned what dependent, consistent meant in my algebra class (nor did we ever use them in pre-calculus or calculus classes) even though I knew exactly how to solve such systems and identify which ones had solutions. I'll leave it up to you to classify the system.
However, we know that the two lines must intersect at exactly one point. The line y = a is horizontal, x = b is vertical, and they will intersect at the point x = b, y = a, or (b,a) as an ordered pair.

Volume/460918: What happens to the volume of the confined gas when the pressure is reduced 3 times? 1 solutions
Answer 316291 by richard1234(5390) on 2011-06-14 23:05:42 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! If "3 times" is taken to mean "reduced by a factor of 3", then by Boyle's law (pressure and volume are inversely proportional), the volume would be increased by a factor of 3.

Travel_Word_Problems/460734: A block is placed on an inclined plane. The acceleration of gravity is 9.8 m/s^2. A 26 N force is required to push the block up the incline with constant velocity. What is the height of the block? Answer in units of N.
Mu=0.19
Angle= 21 degrees 1 solutions
Answer 316290 by richard1234(5390) on 2011-06-14 23:04:16 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!I presume you mean "weight" instead of "height" because I don't think it's possible to find the height. Also, the weight, not the height, has units N.
Assuming is the coefficient of kinetic friction, we can find the force of friction:
) (F_n is the normal force).
However, we know that the frictional force must be 26 newtons; this is because "constant velocity" implies zero net force, so a 26 N pushing force must be counteracted by a 26 N frictional force. Also, if we were to label the components of the normal force, we will see that the normal force is equal to the weight times the cosine of the angle of the ramp. Hence,

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/461087: The formula to find the sum of the first n whole number is
sum = (n^2 + n)/2
In order to encourage students to show up early to a school dance, the dance committee decides to charge less for those who come to the dance early. Their plan is to charge the first student to arrive 1 penny. The second student through the door is charged 2 pennies; the third student through the door is charged 3 pennies, and so on. How much money, in total, would be paid by the first 150 students? 1 solutions
Answer 316288 by richard1234(5390) on 2011-06-14 22:51:17 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Pretty cheap school dance, even for 600 students.
1 + 2 + ... + 150 = 150(151)/2 = 11325. This is the number of cents, so the dollar amount is $113.25.

Probability-and-statistics/461124: you randomly select a card from a 52-card deck. What is the probability that the card is either an 8 or black? 1 solutions
Answer 316287 by richard1234(5390) on 2011-06-14 22:49:49 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!I'll assume that the card can be an 8, a black, or both.
There are 26 black cards and four 8's in a standard deck. Using Inclusion-Exclusion principle, the number of cards that are black and/or an 8 is 26 + 4 - 2 (2 being the number of black 8's) = 28. Hence the probability is 28/52 = 7/13.
If we do not want black 8's, we simply subtract off the two black 8's, leaving 26 cards out of 52. The probability in this case would be 26/52 = 1/2.

test/461045: how do you simplify radical expresions? are there certain rules to follow for each of the numbers? how do you you work a problem such as - (check) 20 + 2 (check) 18 ? 1 solutions
Answer 316286 by richard1234(5390) on 2011-06-14 22:45:47 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Denote the square root by sqrt(x), "check" is too ambiguous.
To simplify square roots, you have to factor perfect squares out. To factor
 ,
we see that the largest perfect square divisor of 20 is 4, and for 18, it is 9. So,
Now we split the 4 and the 5, as well as the 9 and the 2.
