Answer 261104 by nyc_function(2733) on 2010-11-04 23:48:45 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! You must write until the prove is stated entirely. Of course, your teacher may accept a short or long prove but either way, you must keep on writing until the prove is stated completely or else you have nothing but words and/or math symbols.

Trigonometry-basics/364398: I was helping a friend with her trig homework and we both got stuck on this one problem. It has to do with solving a trigonometric equation. We know we have to use an identity, but we just haven't found the right one to make it easy. Here is the problem:
Solve for x, where x is greater than or equal to zero, but less than or equal to 2 pi.
sin(x) + (square root of 3)cos(x)= -1
I tried several identities and tried to find a double or half angle formula that might help, but I just haven't been able to get one to work...everytime I replace something with an identity, I make it larger and more complex, I'm not simplifying anything. 1 solutions

You can put this solution on YOUR website!sin(x) + (square root of 3)cos(x) = -1
Add 1 to both sides.
sin(x) + (square root of 3)cos(x) + 1 = 0
Did you try the quadratic formula?
Let a = 1, b = sqrt[3] and c = 1
Using the quadratic formula I got:
x = (-sqrt[3] + i)/2
AND
x = (-sqrt[3] - i)/2

Rational-functions/363196: Simplify the rational expression over

1 solutions
Answer 259001 by nyc_function(2733) on 2010-10-28 17:41:46 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Factor the top and bottom and then reduce the fraction as needed.
4x^2 - 36 becomes (2x - 6)(2x + 6).
2x - 6 becomes 2(x - 3) and 2x + 6 becomes 2(x + 3).
The numerator becomes [4(x - 3)(x + 3)].
x^2 + 10x + 21 becomes [(x + 3)(x + 7)] = the denominator.
Our fraction now looks like this:
[4(x - 3)(x + 3)]/[(x + 3)(x + 7)]
What do you think we need to do now?
We need to cancel out common terms on the top and bottom.
I see that (x + 3) is found on the top and bottom. So, we cancel out (x + 3) on the top and bottom.
The answer is: 4(x - 3)/(x + 7).

Travel_Word_Problems/363253: it takes ypur bus 1/2 hr to get you to school which is 2 miles away. how far would a round trip be in yards? 1 solutions
Answer 258998 by nyc_function(2733) on 2010-10-28 17:32:25 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Going to school takes 30 minutes and the school is 2 miles away.
Returning from school takes 30 minutes and the school is still 2 miles away.
A round trip totals 4 miles in this case.
The question is: How many yards in 4 miles?
There are 5280 feet in one mile.
For 4 miles, there are 5280 x 4 or 21,120 feet.
There are 3 feet in one yard.
So, 21,120 feet divided by 3 feet = 7040 yards.
There are 7040 yards in 4 miles.
