Answer 264184 by nyc_function(2733) About Me  on 2010-11-14 00:20:03 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You are almost correct.

The answer is 32 for b.

The distance from A to E = E to C.

1/2b + 1 = b - 15

b = 32

Now that we know b, we must plug that into the equation to find the distance from A to E.

AE = EC

If EC = 32 - 15 or 17, then AE must be 17 also.

Trigonometry-basics/368413: What is the solution for the exact value of cos195 degrees?
1 solutions

Answer 262547 by nyc_function(2733) About Me  on 2010-11-09 13:03:36 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Find the exact value of cos195 degrees.

The key is to write 195 degrees as the sum or difference of two numbers whose sine and cosine are known.

cos195 = cos(45 + 150).

NOTE: 45 + 150 = 195.

We need to use the sum formula for cosine.

We use this: cos(A + B) = cosAcosB - sinAsinB

Let A = 45 and B = 150

cos(45 + 150) = cos45cos150 - sin45sin150

If you memorized the unit circle (as you should to make your trig life easier), you will know the following:

cos45 = sqrt[2]/2

cos150 = -sqrt[3]/2

sin45 = sqrt[2]

sin150 = 1/2

cos(45 + 150) = sqrt[2]/2 * -sqrt[3]/2 - sqrt[2]/2 * 1/2

cos(45 + 150) = (-sqrt[6] - sqrt[2])/4

So, the exact value of cos195 degrees is (-sqrt[6] - sqrt[2])/4

Numeric_Fractions/368412: 16/x=58%, What is X equal to?
1 solutions

Answer 262544 by nyc_function(2733) About Me  on 2010-11-09 12:47:46 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The first thing to do is change 58% to a decimal.

So, 58% = 0.58
The equation now looks like this:

(16/x) = 58

To remove the fraction, multiply both sides of the equation by x.

This will produce 16 = 0.58x as you know.

We now divide 16 by 0.58 to find x.

16/0.58 = x

27.5862069 = x

We can round off 27.5862069 to the nearest tenths to get 27.6 = x.

Linear-equations/368408: Can someone help me find the domain for g(x)=6/2-5x

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
g(x)= 6/2-5x
To domain of g(x) will be the answer(s) for x that do not make the denominator zero.

To find the domain, set 2 - 5x = 0 and solve for x.

2 - 5x = 0

-5x = -2

x = -2/-5

x = 2/5

DOMAIN = ALL REAL NUMBERS except that x CANNOT be 2/5.

Done!

NOTE: If x = 2/5 here, it will create a zero in the denominator, which is undefined since there is no such thing as division by zero.

log_10 (6x - 3) = 4

(1) Rewrite the equation in exponential form.

10 is raised to the 4th power and (6x - 3) moves to the right side of the equation.

10^4 = 6x - 3

(2) We now solve equation for x.

10,000 = 6x - 3

10,000 + 3 = 6x

10003 = 6x

(3) We now divide 10003 by 6 to find x.

10003/6 = x

1667.17 = x

Trigonometry-basics/368400: From a point on level ground 60 feet from the base of a tree, the angle between the ground and the line of sight to the top of the tree is 42 degrees, how tall is the tree to the nearest foot?

Answer 262535 by nyc_function(2733) About Me  on 2010-11-09 12:08:59 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
To find the height of the tree, we use the tangent function from trigonometry.

The point which is 60 feet away from the base of the tree and the line of sight create a right triangle for us.

tangent = opposite side of triangle divided by the adjacent side of triangle.

Let h = height of tree

tan42 = h/60

tan42(60) = h

54.02424266 = h

To nearest foot, the tree is 54 feet.

test/368119: 8+(-3)

Answer 262332 by nyc_function(2733) About Me  on 2010-11-08 20:00:30 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
To solve, you need to know the rules for addition of signed numbers.

When adding two numbers with different signs, subtract and include the sign of the bigger number with your answer.

8 + (-3) = 8 minus 3, which is 5.

The reason why the answer is 5 and not -5 is because 8 is BIGGER than -3.
By the way, you need to memorize the rules of signed numbers because you will see and use them all the time in math. Students who do not take time out to memorize these signs will have a hard time in algebra and beyond.

One day, you will get stuff like 8x + (-3x) which of course = 5x. You need to know the rules of signed numbers to solve such questions.

Triangles/368088: volume of a right circular cone,slove for h

Answer 262316 by nyc_function(2733) About Me  on 2010-11-08 19:25:55 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The volume of a right circular cone is calculated using the following formula: V = 1/3πr^2h.

We need to solve for h. To solve for a variable means to isolate the variable.

V = 1/3πr^2h

We first multiply both sides by 3.

After doing so, we get: 3V = πr^2h.

We now divide both sides by πr^2 to solve for h.

3V/πr^2 = h

Nice work! Now divide every term by -1.

Where is -1? It is indicated by the negative in front of y.

In other words, -y means -1 times y.

The same is true for any variable. If there is a negative sign in front of a variable, it is considered to be -1 times the variable.

Back to your question.

-y = (3/4)x - 5

y = (-3/4)x + 5
