Pythagorean-theorem/554914: the area of a square is 81 square centimeters, find the length of the diagonal.
1 solutions

Answer 361551 by nyc_function(2733) About Me  on 2012-01-09 21:18:15 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The area of a square = side times side.

In short, A = s times s or s^2

81 = s^2

Taking the square root of both sides, we get s = 9cm.

To find the diagonal, we use the Pathygorean Theorem.
Let d = the diagonal representing the hypotenuse of the right triangle formed by two sides of the square and the diagonal.

(side)^2 + (side)^2 = (diagonal)^2

9^2 + 9^2 = d^2

81 + 81 = d^2

162 = d^2

Taking the square root of both sides, we get d = sqrt{162}.

The length of the diagonal is the square root of 162
written as sqrt{162}.

Linear-equations/554813: what is the slope for (-12, 9) (-12, -6)
1 solutions

Answer 361491 by nyc_function(2733) About Me  on 2012-01-09 19:22:04 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
m = (-6-9)/(-12-(-12)

m = -15/0

Let m = slope

Since we cannot divide by zero, then the answer is UNDEFINED SLOPE.

This means, the slope DOES NOT EXIST for the given two points.

The line that connects the two given points is surely a vertical line for the slope of vertical lines does not exist. The line that connects these two points is the line x = -12, which is a vertical line.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A = (h/2)(B + b)
Let B = 15
Let b = 7

As you can see, more information is needed. I need to know the value of A in order to find h (our height).
You did not provide the area of the isoceles trapazoid. So, it is impossible to find the height without knowing the value of A.

Geometry_Word_Problems/554731: find the area of a circle with a radius of 4 1/2 inches. Round your answer to the nearest hundredth
1 solutions

Answer 361477 by nyc_function(2733) About Me  on 2012-01-09 18:33:12 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A = pi(r^2)

4 1/2 can be written as an improper fraction 9/2.

So, let r = 9/2

A = pi(9/2)^2

Let pi = 3.14

A = 3.14(9/2)^2

A = 3.14(81/4)

A = 3.14(20.25)

A = 63.585in^2

We now round to the nearest hundredths AKA second decimal place.

A = 63.59in^2

Surface-area/554724: What is the awnser to this question?: l=12inches, w=4inches? Lenght and with. I have to find the perimeter and the area of the rectangle or square with the given demensions. Explain how u got it please.
1 solutions

Answer 361469 by nyc_function(2733) About Me  on 2012-01-09 18:14:54 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Use the following two formulas:
For area use: A = Length times width
For perimeter use: P = 2(length) + 2(width)

L = 12, W = 4

A = 12 times 4

A = 48in^2

The area is 48 squared inches.

==============================
P = 2(12) + 2(4)

P = 24 + 8

P = 32 inches

The perimeter is 32 inches.

The figure given is a rectangle not a square.

Functions/553484: Find the domain of the function g(x)=3/10-7x
1 solutions

Answer 360883 by nyc_function(2733) About Me  on 2012-01-06 12:05:44 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
To find domain for g(x), set denominator to zero and solve for x.

10 - 7x = 0

-7x = -10

x = -10/-7

x = 10/7

DOMAIN = ALL REAL NUMBERS EXCEPT THAT X CANNOT EQUAL 10/7.

WHY CAN'T X = 10/7 HERE?

If x is replaced by the fraction 10/7, division by zero is made.

Since division by zero does not exist, x CANNOT BE 10/7.

Radicals/553504: Meteorologists can approximate the duration of a storm by using the formula T=.07D^3/2, where T is the time in hours that a storm of diameter D (in miles) lasts.
The National Weather Service reports that a storm 4 miles in diameter is headed toward New Haven. How long can the residents espect the storm to last?
1 solutions

Answer 360880 by nyc_function(2733) About Me  on 2012-01-06 11:59:11 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let D = 4 in the equation and solve for T.

T = 0.07D^(3/2)

T = 0.07(4)^(3/2)

T = 0.07(sqrt4{4})^3

T = 0.07 times (2)^3

T = 0.07 times 8

T = 0.56

We now convert 0.56 to time in hours.

0.56 times 60 minutes in one hour = 33.6 minutes.

Now, multiply 0.6 (which is the decimal part of 33.6) times 60 = 36 seconds.

Final answer for T = 0.0 hours, 33 minutes and 36 seconds.

Greatest Common Factor: The highest number that divides exactly into two or more numbers. It is the "greatest" thing for simplifying fractions!
What is the BIGGEST number that evenly divides 54 and 96?

How about 6?

54/6 = 9

96/6 = 16

Yes, that's correct.

The least common multiple (LCM) of two numbers is the smallest number (not including zero) that is a multiple of both.

Multiples of 3O: 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210

Multiples of 42: 42, 84, 126, 168, 210

On the list provided, what number is found in both?

The number 210 is found in both.

Then 210 is the LCM.

x^6 - 9y^2 factors out to be (x^3 - 3y)(x^3 + 3y).

If you multiply (x^3 - 3y) by (x^3 + 3y), it will take you back to the given problem. This is how we know when the answer is correct in terms of factoring.
Factoring is the opposite of multiplication.

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/553499: Mrs. Hill is 33 years older than her son. In 4 years she will be four times as old as her son. How old is each?
I am not sure how to define all this to actually get the answer. what i have so far is x= son. so the equation I have so far is 33+x; 4+x+4x
1 solutions

Answer 360870 by nyc_function(2733) About Me  on 2012-01-06 11:18:23 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let her son be s years old. She is s + 33 years old.
In four years time this becomes s + 4 and s + 37.
so, 4(s + 4) = s + 37
=> 4s + 16 = s + 37
=> 3s = 21
so, s = 7
i.e. their ages are 7 and 40.

test/553498: 5=a+4/3 solve for a ... I know the answer but I'm not sure how to set up the equation to show the answer a: 11
1 solutions

Answer 360868 by nyc_function(2733) About Me  on 2012-01-06 11:07:12 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Any letter by itself is divided by 1.
In other words, a is really a/1. So, a/1 = a because ANYTHING divided by 1 equal ANYTHING. Understand?

This does not change your equation.

The equation 5 = a/1 + 4/3 is EXACTLY the same as 5 = a + 4/3.

Multiply every term on both sides of the equation by 3. This will remove the fraction on the right side.

5 times 3 = a/1 times 3 + (4/3) times 3

15 = 3a + 4

15 - 4 = 3a

11 = 3a

We now divide 11 by 3 to find a.

11/3 = a
The correct answer is not 11 but the improper fraction 11/3.
So, a = 11/3 is the answer.
Understand?

Linear-equations/553495: How do you solve the equation 17 divided by 35 = - x
1 solutions

Answer 360867 by nyc_function(2733) About Me  on 2012-01-06 10:59:20 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
We have 17/35 = -x

Remember that any letter standing alone, for lack of a better word, has a factor of 1 next to it. In other words and for your question, -x is really -1 times x. Did you know that?

We multiply both sides of the equation by 35 as step one.

35 times (17/35) = -x times 35

17 = -35x

To find x, we now simply divide 17 by -35 (our step two).

17/-35 = x

-17/35 = x

Did you follow?
Are you still confused?
If so, write back....

test/553494: A parallelogram has an area of 6x^2+11x-10 and a base of 2x+5. what is the height?

Triangles/551748: Is it possible for a triangle to have side lengths of 19 cm, 13 cm , and 7 cm? why?
1 solutions

Answer 359869 by nyc_function(2733) About Me  on 2012-01-02 11:48:40 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
It is not possible to have a right triangle with the given sides where 19 represents the hypotenuse.
The reason is that in this case the sum of the squares of sides 7 and 13 DOES NOT equal the hypotenuse 19 squared.

LOOK:

7^2 + 13^2 = 19^2

49 + 169 = 361

218 DOES NOT EQUAL 361.

Understand?
