You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Lets name the equation
2x-y=4 ----------- 1
6x+3y=-18 ----------- 2
---------------------------
From equation 1
y=2x-4 ----------- 3
---------------------------
Subsititue equation 3 into equation 2
6x+3(2x-4)=-18
6x+6x-12=-18
12x=-6
x=-1%2F2
---------------------------
Subsititue x into equation 3
y=2%28-1%2F2%29-4
=-1-4
=-5

Linear-equations/107419: How do I solve by elimination: X-4Y=-23
2X+3Y=9
1 solutions

Answer 78211 by mathnoob(8) About Me  on 2007-11-01 05:58:59 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
multiply first equation by 2
2x-8y=-46
(2x+3y)-(2x-8y)=9-(-46)
2x+3y-2x+8y=55
11y=55
y=5
sub y into the first equation in your question we get
x-4(5)=-23
x-20=-23
x=-3
