Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/337440: Casey and Chris want to design an open topped box having a square base and a surface area of 108 square inches. What dimensions would the box of greatest volume have?
1 solutions

Answer 241835 by mananth(12269) About Me  on 2010-08-31 20:38:39 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
square box top open
so the surface area will be 5 times the area of each face.
since the box is open at top only 5 sides.
let lebgth be x
area of 1 face of the box = x^2
5x^2 = total area.
5x^2=108
x^2= 108/5
x^2= 21.6
take sqrt
x= sqrt 21.6
4.65 inches is the side of the box

1 solutions

Answer 241833 by mananth(12269) About Me  on 2010-08-31 20:28:13 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(1)Luke has $5 more then Sam
if sam has $x
luke = x+5
(2)Together they have $73
x+x+5 =73
2x+5=73
add -5 to both sides
2x+5-5=73-5
2x=68
divide by 2
2x/2 = 68/2
x= 34
Sam has $34
Luke has x+5
= 34+5=39
how much money does each have?
(1)there were 12 people on the jury
(2)there were 4 more men then women
how many men where there?
let women be x
men = x+4
x+x+4=12
2x+4 =12
2x=8
x=4 women
(1)lee bycycled 3km farther than wing
(2)the sum of the distances they biked was 25km
how far did each bicyclist go?
wing bikes x km
lee bikes x+3 km
x+x+3=25
2x+3 = 25-3
add -3
2x=22
divide by 2
x=11 wing
lee = 14 km

Answer 241574 by mananth(12269) About Me  on 2010-08-31 05:45:49 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let the width be x
the length will be 1.5x
..
Side Margin = 0.5 inch. 1 " total
Top margin 1 " bottom 1" = 2 inches.
Printing area = (x-1)(1.5x-2)=51
1.5x^2-2x-1.5x+2=51
1.5x^2-3.5x+2=51
multiply by 2
3x^2-7x+4=102
3x^2-7x-98=0
3x^2-21+14x-98=0
3x(x-7)+14(x-7)=0
(x-7)(3x+14)
x= 7 ignore -14/3
printing dimensions = 7" & 10.5 "

James = 2x
..
12 years ago their ages were
andy x-12
James 2x-12
..
2x-12= 3(x-12)
2x-12 = 3x -36
add 12
2x-12+12 = 3x-36+12
2x= 3x-24
add -3x
2x-3x= -3x+3x-24
-x = -24
divide by 1
x=24
Andy's age
James age = 48

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let train B meet train A at x miles distance
during that time train A travels x-12 miles
because it was 12 minutes early at the station.
In12 minutes it travels 12 miles. ( 60 mph)
x/70 = x-12/60
60x= 70(x-12)
60x= 70x-840
add 840 to both sides
60x+840=70x+840-840
60x+840 =70x
add -60x
60x-60x+840 = 70x -60x
10x =840
divide by 10
x= 84
..
train B speed = 70 mph
distance = 84 miles
time taken = 84/70 =1.2 hours 1 hour 12 minutes
train B will catch up with train A at 4:39 pm

Each Morning Jarilyn runs a total distance of 42 city blocks and always chooses a rectangular running path. This morning her rectangular path was twice as long as it was wide. How many blocks long and how many blocks wide was this mornings rectangular path?
..
Let width of area covering 42 blocks be x
length = 2*x = 2x.
..
He runs round the 42 blocks in rectangular path.
Perimeter = 42 blocks
Perimeter P = 2*(L+W)
2*(x+2x)=42
2*3x=42
6x=42
divide by 6
6x/6 = 42/6
x= 7 blocks width
length = 2*x = 2*7 =14 blocks

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
since the cars are travelling in same direction Car 1 gains 10 km every hour.
in 1/4 hour it will gain 10/(1/4)= 2.5 km.
..
Let car 1 travel x km at speed of 65 km/h
car2 will travel x-2.5 km in the same time
..
time = distance /speed
..
x/65 = (x-2.5)/55
55x=65(x-2.5)
55x=65x-162.5
add -65x
55x-65x=65x-65x-162.5
-10x=-162.5
divide by -10
x= -162.5/-10
x=16.25 km. the distance car 1 has to travel to be 15 minutes ahead.

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/336981: Hi, my name is Whitney and I have the answer to my math question, I just can't figure out how to get there. Here's the problem:
%284%29%2F%283-x%29+%2B+%282x%29%2F%28x-3%29
I understand that I need to find the least common denominator so I multiply (4)/(3-x) by (x-3)/(x-3) and (2x)/(x-3) by (3-x)/(3-x), after that, I am missing something. I end up with 2(5x-6-x^2)/(3-x)(x-3) and I don't see any way to factor it further. I am clearly wrong since the answer is suppose to be 2(x-2)/(x-3). Any help and explanation of what I'm not getting would be very appreciated.

Let $ x be the new policies
$26250 -x will be the renewals.
..
12% on new
3 % on renewal.
Amount received = $1350

0.12x+0.03(26250-x)= 1350
0.12x+787.5-0.03x = 1350
0.09x = 1350-787.5
0.09x = 562.5
