Travel_Word_Problems/349531: Two boats leave the dock at the same time going in the same direction.
The first boat travels at 35 mph. If the boats are 5 miles apart after 10 hours what is the speed of the second boat? 1 solutions
Answer 249817 by mananth(12270) on 2010-09-28 23:14:53 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Boat A 35 mph
After 10 hours boat A travels 35*10 = 350 miles.
..
the difference between them after 10 hours = 5 miles.
SO either the boat B will be 355 miles or 345 miles from starting point.
Since we do not know which one is faster
..
speed of B = 345/10 OR 355/10
speed = 34.5 mph OR 35.5 mph

Rational-functions/349516: Hi I'm not sure how to solve this problem and I have looked in my book and can't find similar problems.
1 1 5
____ - ___ = ___
4x-12 x^2-9 x-3
Note: (X^2) is x squared minus 9. I tried to make these look like fractions but it should read; 1 over 4x minus 12 minus 1 over x squared minus nine equals 5 over x minus three.
Thank You!!!! 1 solutions

#19 The product of 10, and a number decreased by 5, is 200.
#20 Twelve subtracted by twice a number is four less than the same number

Answer 249793 by mananth(12270) on 2010-09-28 22:31:43 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Eight times the sum of two and some number is 120
8(n+2)=120
The product of 10, and a number decreased by 5, is 200.
10n-5 =200
Twelve subtracted by twice a number is four less than the same number
2n-12 = n-4

Linear_Equations_And_Systems_Word_Problems/349443: Imogene's car traveled 280 mi averaging a certain speed. If the car had gone 5 mph faster, the trip would have taken 1 hour less. Find the average speed.
i let r= rate of average speed
i let r+5= rate could have been 1 hour less
280/r + 280/(r+5)= 280/r + 280/(r+5) 1 solutions
Answer 249766 by mananth(12270) on 2010-09-28 20:51:52 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Imogene's car traveled 280 mi averaging a certain speed. If the car had gone 5 mph faster, the trip would have taken 1 hour less. Find the average speed.
..
let rate be x
if rate is increase by 5 the new rate = x+5 mph
Distance = 280 miles
...
Time taken by old rate - time taken by new rate =1
...
280/x-280/(x+5)=1
280(x+5)-280x /x(x+5) =1
280x+1400-280x=x(x+5)
1400 = x^2+5x
x^2+5x-1400=0
x^2++40x-35x-1400=0
x(x+40)-35(x+40)=0
(x+40)(x-35)=0
So x = 35 mph the original rate

Linear-equations/349438: write an equation of the line containg the given point and parallel to the given line..
(6,-1); 4x-(-5y)=6
4x minus negative 5y = 6 1 solutions
Answer 249764 by mananth(12270) on 2010-09-28 20:44:11 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!(6,-1); 4x-(-5y)=6
4x-(-5y)=6
4x+5y=6
5y=-4x+6
y=-4x/5 +6/5
slope = -4/5
...
slope of line parallel to this line will also be -4/5
..
it passes through (6,-1)
plug values of x,y,m to find b in equation y = mx+b
-1=-4/5 * 6 +b
-1=-24/5 +b
-1+24/5=b
(-5+24)/5 =b
b=19/5
The equation is
y = -4x/5 + 19/5

Equations/349430: If the length of a rectangle is 3 yards more than twice its width, and the perimeter of the rectangle is 36 yards, find the dimensions of the rectangle 1 solutions
Answer 249759 by mananth(12270) on 2010-09-28 20:34:44 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!let width be x
length = 2x+3
..
Perimeter = 2(L+W)
2*(x+2x+3)=36
2(3x+3)=36
6x+6=36
6x=30
x= 5 yards the width
2x+3 = 10+3 = 13 yards the length

Travel_Word_Problems/349092: A car leaves manila, heading toward a resort, at an average speed of 60 miles per hour. On a parrallel track, another car leaves Manila a half hour later and travels at an average speed of 90 miles per hour. At what points will car B pass A? 1 solutions
Answer 249523 by mananth(12270) on 2010-09-28 09:15:42 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Car A 60 mph
Car B 90 mph
..
Car B catches up 30 mph
..
Car B leaves 1/2 later.
By that time car A has traveled 1/2 * 60 = 30 miles.
...
time = distance / speed
time = 30/30 = 1 hour.

Expressions-with-variables/349062: Find a two digit number such that the tens digit exceeds the unit digit by 3 and the number is 4 less than the sum of the squares of its digits. 1 solutions
Answer 249503 by mananth(12270) on 2010-09-28 06:29:01 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!let units digit be y
ten's digit be x
...
x=y+3
x-y=3
...
10x+y= x^2+y^2-4
x^2+y^2-y-10x-4 =0
plug value of x
(y+3)^2+y^2-y-10(y+3)-4=0
y^2+6y+9+y^2-y-10y-30-4=0
2y^2-5y-25=0
2y^2-10y+5y-25=0
2y(y-5)+5(y-5)=0
(2y+5)(y-5)=0
y=5
x=8
the number is 85

Word_Problems_With_Coins/349034: i have 30 coins in my pocket, some dimes, twice as many nickels, and the rest quareters. the total value is $5.30. how many dimes do i have? 1 solutions
Answer 249502 by mananth(12270) on 2010-09-28 06:21:07 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!dimes=x
nickels=2x
quarters = 30-(x+2x)
=30-3x.
..
10x+5*2x+25(30-3x)=530
10x+10x+750-75x=530
-55x=530-750
-55x=-220
x=4 dimes
nickels = 2*4 =8
quarters = 30-3*4= 18
...
4*10+8*5+18*25=530
