Functions/356157: Volume. An open box is constructed from a square 10-inch piece of cardboard by cutting squares of length x inches out of each corner and folding the sides up. Express the volume of the box as a function of x, and state the domain.
1 solutions

Answer 254237 by mananth(12270) About Me  on 2010-10-14 00:22:29 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the cardboard = 10 by 10
x is cut off from corner
so the length of the box will be 10-2x
the width also will be 10-2x
the height = x
...
Volume V = (10-2x)^2*x
V=(100-40x+4x^2)*2x
V= 8x^3-80x^2+200x

a boat goes 14 km/h in still water. The boat is paddled 6 km downstream in a river in the same time it takes to go 3 km upstream. What is the speed of the river?
...
speed in still water = 14 km/h
speed of current be x
..
speed downstream = x+14
spped upstream = 14-x
...
Time = distance /speed
time upstream = 3/(14-x)
speed downstream = 6/x+14
..
the times are same
3/(14-x) =6/(x+14)
3(x+14)=6(14-x)
3x+42=84-6x
9x=84-42

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Find the sum of two consecutive positive even integers such that the square of the smaller is 4 more than 10 times the larger.
..
let the numbers be x & x+2
the square of the smaller = x^2
10 times larger = 10(x+2)
4 more
10(x+2)+4
x^2=10(x+2)+4
x^2=10x+20+4
x^2=10x+24
x^2-10x-24=0
x^2-12x+2x-24=0
x(x-12)+2(x-12)=0
(x-12)(x+2)
so the number is x=12 which is positive
the other number =12+2= 14
12+14=26 their sum

A passenger train's speed is 60 miles per hour, and a freight train's speed is 40 miles per hour. The passenger train travels the same distance in 1.5h less time than the freight train. How long does each train take to make the trip.
passenger train speed = 60 mph
freight train speed = 40 mph
..
let freight train take x hours
the passenger train will take x-1.5 hours
..
the distance they travel is the same
...
distance = speed * time
...
passenger train distance = 60*(x-1.5)
freight train distance = 40x
..
40x=60(x-1.5)
40x=60x-90
60x-40x=90
20x=90
/20
x=90/20
x=4.5
freight train 4.5 hours
passenger train 4.5-1.5 = 3 hours

2)Why is commutative law used? How should I know when to use it? Why are they switched? How should I know on my own when to switch them? The book shows the first step goes to (4y+3xy^2) (4y-3xy^2). I do not understand that at all.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(4y+3xy^2) (4y-3xy^2)
to put in simple terms you have to multiply each term in one bracket with the other terms in the second bracket.
...
4y(4y-3xy^2)+3xy^2(4y-3xy^2)
now you have to multiply the term outside the bracket with the terms in the bracket.( distributive law)
...
4y*4y-4y*3xy^2+3xy^2*4y-3xy^2*3xy^2
16y^2-12xy^3+12xy^3-9x^2y^4
16y^2-9x^2y^4
