You can put this solution on YOUR website!-3x-y=-10...................1
4x-4y=8.....................2
multiply equation 1 by-4
12x+4y=40
add it to 2
16x=48
x=3
plug value of x in 1
-9-y=-10
y=1
(3,1) is the solution
...
if you need to solve by graphing then generate 3 values of y for various values of x for both equations Example
1. (1, 7) (2 ,4)
2.(1-1)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!On the first of three tests, Charlotte scored 72 points. On the third test, her score was one point more than on her second test. Her average on the three tests were 83. What were her scores on the second and third tests?
..
average on 3 tests = 83
so total = 249
..
first = 72
second x
third = x+1
...
x+x+1+72=249
2x+73=249
2x=249-73
2x=176

..
let second be x cm
first = 2x
third = x/2
..
x+2x+(x/2)=5x/2
7x/2=224
multiply by 2
(7x/2)*2 = 224*2
5x=448

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/361944: I just turned 16, and I've been on a homeschooling program for about a year and a half now. I do really well with all of the work except one class! I have always struggled with math, algebra in specific. As of right now I'm a senior and I will graduate in June if I stay on track. Which will be super early for me! My only issue is my algebra class, it's holding me back and may keep me from graduating! =[
Please help me!
As of right now I'm factoring polynomials which hardly makes sense to me!
1. 8x+12y-2x^-3xy
2.9x^-16
3.14x^-7x to the third? Idk how to type powers so I'm using ^ as to the second, and anything else I'm just going to type out...
4. x^-6x-5
5. 4x^-12xy+9y^
Please help me! 1 solutions
Answer 257990 by mananth(12269) on 2010-10-26 10:46:45 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!1. 8x+12y-2x^2-3xy
4(2x+3y)-x(2x+3y)
(2x+3y)(4-x)
2.9x^2-16
difference of two squares
(3x)^2-(4)^2
(3x+4)(3x-4)
3.14x^2-7x^3
7x^2(2-x)
4. x^2-6x-5 ( i think this should be +5) OR this can be solved by quadratic formula.( I have assumed +5)Please check
x^2-5x-x+5
x(x-5)-1(x-5)
(x-5)(x-1)
5. 4x^2-12xy+9y^2
(2x-3y)^2
Please help me!

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/361922: You go to a local mechanic to get your tires changed. The tires cost $300. There is a 6% sales tax, but you get a 10% discount. There is also a $10 non-taxable disposal fee for your old tires, which the mechanic tells you is not subject to discount.
Write a function, t(x) for the total purchase amount after taxes but before discounts and fees.Does it matter whether the mechanic adds the tax first or takes the discount first?
I really need some help with this problem everything I have tried hasn't been right. 1 solutions
Answer 257960 by mananth(12269) on 2010-10-26 09:26:24 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!tyre = $300
let x be the tyre cost
tax = 6%
function with no discount and fees
t(x)= x+0.06x
...
BEFORE DISCOUNT
Price 300 add 6% tax = 318
discount 10% = 31.8
318-31.8=$286.2
..
AFTER DISCOUNT
price = 300
10% discount
price = 300-30=270
270*1.06 =286.2
..
how does it matter ?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!F=(9/5)*C (degrees)+32
plug the value of C in the equation
F=(9/5)*32+32
F=57.6+32
F=89.6 deg
......
ALso what if the temp is -40degreesF, what woulld it be in celsius
-40=(9/5)*C +32
add -32
-40-32= 9/5*c
-72=9/5*c

You can put this solution on YOUR website!write an equation for the line through the point (1,1) and perpendicular to the line 2x+y=9
2x+y=9
add -2x
y=-2x+9
compare this with slope m of y = mx+b
m=-2 the slope
slope of perpendicular line = 1/2

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/361900: The area of a garden is 1920 square feet, and the length of its diagonal is 68 feet. Find the dimensions of the garden. 1 solutions
Answer 257954 by mananth(12269) on 2010-10-26 08:37:53 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!The area of a garden is 1920 square feet, and the length of its diagonal is 68 feet. Find the dimensions of the garden.
..
area = L*W=1920
diagonal = 68
..
L=1920/W
..
use pythagoras theorem
(1920/w)^2+w^2=68^2
3686400 +w^4=4625w^2
w^4-4625^2+3686400=0
use quadratic formula
discriminant = 6605025
x1=(4625+sqrt(6645025))/2
x1=w^2 (taking only positve values of w^2)& rounding off The decimals
x1= 3601.39
Take square root we w=60
length = 1920/60
Length = 30
The dimensions are 60 by 32
