You can put this solution on YOUR website!The speed of the boat in still water is 28 mph. the boat traveled 70 miles per hour downstream in the same amount of time that it took to travel 42 miles upstream. What is the rate of current of the river?
..
let rate of current be x mph
rate of boat in still water = 28mph
..
Upstream rate = 28-x mph
downstream rate = 28+x
..
upstream distance = 42 miles
downstream distance = 70 miles
...
t= d/r
upstream time = downstream time
...
42/(28-x) = 70/x
42x=70(28-x)
42x=1960-70x
42x+70x=1960
112x=1960
/112
x= 1960/112

You can put this solution on YOUR website!If 8/3 of a cetain number is subtracted from eight times the number the result is 128. Find the number.
8x - (8/3)x]= 128
One number is 20 more than a second number. Their sum is twenty six. What are the numbers?
lets second number be x
first number = x+20
x+x+20=26
2x+20 =26
If tem times the smaller of two consectuve integers is added to six times the larger, the result is 118. Find the integers.
..
x, x+1 be the integers
10 times smaller = 10x
6 times larger = =6(x+1)
10x+6(x+1)= 110

You can put this solution on YOUR website!20x-5y=1.2
to simplify , since there is one decimal multiply equation by 10
200x-50y =12
50y = 200x-12
y = 200x/50 -12/50
y = 4x - 6/25

Ed is 30 years younger than double Merlyn and Patrick's combined ages. Precious is 79 years younger than Antonio. The sum of their ages is 271. How old is Precious?
..
let Antonio = x years
Precious = x-79
Antonio = x= 5* age of patrick
Patrick = x/5
..
Patrick = 1/2 age of Merlyn
2*patrick = Merlyn
2x/5= Merlyn
..
Ed = 2*(2x/5 + x/5)-30
Ed = 2*(3x/5)-30
Ed= 6x/5-30
...
now you have all their ages in variables
add them up
x+x-79+x/5 +2x/5 +6x/5-30 =271
2x+x/5 +2x/5+6x/5 = 271+79+30
(10x+x+2x+6x)/5 =380
19x=5*380
x= 5*380/19
x = 100 Antonio's age
Precious = Antonio's age -79
..
100-79 = 21
Precious is 21 years

Geometry_Word_Problems/369880: A tree casts a shadow 180 feet long. Find the height of the tree if the angle of elevation of the sun is 30°. 1 solutions
Answer 263669 by mananth(12270) on 2010-11-12 05:33:47 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Height of tree = x feet
length of shadow = 180 feet
angle of elevation = 30 deg.
..
Tan  = height/shadow
Tan (30)* 180 = height of tree
height of tree = 104 feet ( rounded off)

Geometry_Word_Problems/369984: The length of a room exceeds the width by 5 feet, and the height is 3 feet less than the width. The area of the four walls exceeds the sum fo the areas of ceiling and floor by 240 square feet. Find the dimensions of the room. 1 solutions
Answer 263663 by mananth(12270) on 2010-11-12 05:20:34 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!let width be x
length = x+5
height = x-3
..
Area of 4 walls = 2*LH + 2*WH
= 2*(x-3)(x+5)+2*x*(x-3)
=2(x^2+2x-15)+2x^2-6x
=2x^2+4x-30+2x^2-6x
=4x^2-2x-30
...
Area of ceiling & floor
Area = 2 * LW
Area = 2*x*(x+5)
Area = 2x^2+10x
..
4x^2-2x-30 =2x^2+10x+240
2x^2-12x-270=0
/2
x^2-6x-135=0
x^2-15x+9x-135=0
x(x-15)+9(x-15)=0
(x-15)(x+9)=0
x= 15 feet the width
length = x+5 = 15 +5 = 20 feet
height = x-3 = 15-3 = 12 feet

Travel_Word_Problems/370005: There is a race to a point 3miles away and back. Person A goes 20 mph, Person B goes 16mph. Where do they meet (in feet).
I figured that it took person A .15 hours to the turning point and the Person B had traveled 2.4 miles in that time.
I don't know how to go the rest of the answer....! Help! 1 solutions
Answer 263659 by mananth(12270) on 2010-11-12 05:01:23 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! race distance = 3 & back
A = 20 mph
B= 16 mph
..
A takes 3/20 hour to reach other end
..
By then
B has reached 16*3/20 miles
=12/5 miles
..
at this point of time they are 3-(12/5) miles apart facing each other.
=3/5 miles.
..
Now they are running towards each other
their speeds when added up is 36 mph
..
distance = 3/5 miles
speed = 36 mph
..
time they meet = (3/5) /36
3/5 *1/36
=3/180 hours.
..
in 3/180 hours B will run ( d= rt)
3/180 * 20
=1/3 mile
...
1/3 * 5280 = 1760 feet from the returning end.

Thank you!! 1 solutions
Answer 263655 by mananth(12270) on 2010-11-12 04:26:17 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!1 1/3 = 4/3
..
4/3 * -1/3 *3/4
..
since all are to be multiplied group them in the numerator & denominator
(4*-1*3)/(3*3*4)
-12/36

Answer 263653 by mananth(12270) on 2010-11-12 04:22:27 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!99 on first
85 on second
total of two tests = 184
..
you need average 90 from 3 tests
so total score will be 90*3 = 270
..
you have 184
you require 270 -184 = 86 in the third test

You can put this solution on YOUR website!smaller angle x
larger angle = 3x+8
..
their sum =180
x+3x+8=180
4x+8=180
-8
4x= 172

There is a 30-60-90 triangle with an area of 24 radical 3. What is the perimeter of this triangle, and what are the side lengths? (All in terms of X)
Thanks so much for the help. 1 solutions
Answer 263591 by mananth(12270) on 2010-11-11 21:51:45 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!in a 30-60-90 triangle the legs are x & xsqrt3
the hypotenuse = 2x
..
Area = !/2 * base * height

multiply by 2

divide by sqrt3
x^2= 48
x = 6.92
hypotenuse = 2*6.92= 13.84
second leg = x sqrt*(3)
=6.92*sqrt*(3)
= 11.98
..
perimeter = 11.98+6.92+13.84= 32.74

Travel_Word_Problems/369904: an artic tern flew 11,000 miles in 115 days. How many feet per minute did the bird average?
A sneeze can travel up to 100 mi/h. how many feet per second is this? 1 solutions
Answer 263566 by mananth(12270) on 2010-11-11 20:36:30 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!11,000 miles in 115 days.
..
1 mile = 5280 feet
11000 miles =
11000* 5280 feet
=58080000 feet
...
115 days
115 * 24 = 2760 hours
2760 * 60 = 165,600 minutes
..
feet /min = 58,080,000/165,600
= 350.72 feet/minute
..
sneeze speed = 110 mph
110 miles = 110 * 5280 =580,800 feet
1hour = 3600 seconds
..
feet/second = 580,800/3600
= 161.33 feet/second
