You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Gerald runs at a speed of 3km/hr
John has a speed of 4km/hr,
in how many hrs. will they be 14 km apart
..
they are running in opposite directions
add up speeds
4+3=7 km/hr
..
distance = 14 km
...
t= d/r
t= 14/7
t= 2
After 2 hours they will be 14 km apart

Travel_Word_Problems/380152: two cars start from points 420 miles apart and travel toward each other. They meet after 3. 5hours. Find the average speed of each car if one travels 30 mph slower than the other

Answer 269815 by mananth(12270) About Me  on 2010-12-03 00:47:50 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Distance = 420 miles
..
speed of 1 car = x
speed of other car = x-30
...
time they meet = 3.5 hours
...
since they are travelling towards each other add up the speeds
x+x-30= 2x-30
..
t= d/r
3.5=420/(2x-30)
multiply by (2x-30)
3.5(2x-30)=420
7x-105=420
+105
7x=420+105
7x=525
/7
x=75 mph ....speed of one car
speed of other car = 75 -30 = 45 mph

A chemist needs 12 liters of a 40% alcohol solution. She must mix a 20% solution and a 50% solution. How many liters of each well be required to obtain what she needs?
...
20% solution .............x liters
50% solution.............12-x liters
40%.......................12 liters (requirement)
...
I have not converted the percentage to 0.2,0.5,0.4.as generally done.
Even if we convert it, we again multiply by 100 for easy calculation
..
20*x+50*(12-x)=40*12
20x+600-50x=480
20x-50x=480-600
-30x=-120
/-30
x= 4 liters 20% solution
12-x = 8 liters of 50% solution.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
m=1/4 (-2,-3)
...
you have to write the equation in the form y= mx+b
First you have to find the value of b
..
plug value of m and the point(-2,-3)in the equation
..
-3=(1/4 *-2)+b
-3=-1/2 +b
add 1/2

A boat travels 20 miles upstream in 5hours. Going downstream, it can travel 50 miles in the same amount of time. Find the speed of the current and the speed of the boat in still water.
...
speed of boat = x mph
speed of current = y mph
..
speed against current = 4 mph
speed with current = x+y mph
...
time downstream = time upstream
..
t=d/r
..
5=50/(x+y)
5(x+y)=50
/5
x+y =10
x-y=4
add the equations
2x=14
/2
x=7
..
speed in still water = 7 mph
speed of current = 3 mph

Triangles/379565: If the longest side of a triangle is 10 centimeters, does the perimeter have to be bigger than 20 centimeters? I think the triangle perimeter has to be bigger than 20 centimeters because each side would be 10 centimeters and the perimeter would be 30. But my mom says it is possible for a triangle could be equal to 20 centimeters if two sides equal 5 centimeters and the longest side is 10 centimeters. Which is correct? Thank you!

If the longest side of the three sides is less than the sum of the other two sides, then a triangle could be formed.
..
you should have sum of other two side greater than 10 then a triangle can be drawn.
sum of the other two sides must be >10.
..
It is not necessary that the triangle perimeter be more than 30 cm

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let the number of motors he bought be x
he paid $224
so he paid 224/x for each motor.
..
(224/x) -4 is the reduced price.
he got (x+1) motors
((224/x)-4)(x+1)=224
((224-4x)/x)(x+1)= 224
(224-4x)(x+1)/x=224
multiply by x
(224-4x)(x+1)= 224x
224x+224-4x^2-4x=224x
re write
224x-224x+224 -4x^2-4x=0
4x^2+4x-224=0

x^2+x-56=0
x^2+8x-7x-56=0

first find the x intercepts.
plug y =0

Find the root of the equation using quadratic formula.
discriminant b^2-4ac= 28
x1=(2+sqrt(28))/-4
x1=-1.82

x2=(2-sqrt(28))/-4
x2=0.82

The x intercepts are (0,-1.8) & (0,0.82)

Using the equation y = -2x^2-2x+3
find the vertex of the parabola
a=-2, b=-2
h=(-b/2a)
h=(2/-4)
h=-1/2
plug the value of (-1/2) in the equation to get the y value of the vertex
y= -2*(1/4)-2*-1/2+3
y=-0.5+1+3
y=3.5
Vertex ( -1/2 , 3.5)

since x^2 is negative the parabola opens downwards

generate various value of y for different values of x
x=-1, y=3
x=1,y=-1
x=-2,y=3
x=2,y=-9
x=2,y=-9
