You can put this solution on YOUR website!One angle = x
second angle = (5x+18)
third angle = 180 - (x+5x+18)
third angle = 180-(6x+18)
third angle = 180 -6x-18

The stray caught up in five minutes.How long ( in hours ) did the stray run to catch up?How fardid it run?
...
rate = 6 mph.
rate of stray elephant = 10 mph.
since they are moving in same direction subtract the rates
10-6 = 4mph. is the catch up speed.
..
distance = r*t
distance = 4 * 5/60
distance = 20/60
distance = 1/3 mile.
...
distance run by stray = 1/3 mile.
rate = 10 mph
time = (1/3) / 10
time = 1/3 * (1/10)
time = 1/30 hour
time the stray ran = 0.0333 hours

Linear-equations/380909: 3x-2y=9
-6x+4y=1
I need to solve special systems. (& if it is infinitely many, only one, or none.
I tried to do substitution. Canceling out one variable I think the answer I got was x=6 and y=18.
I am not sure it is right. I look at it and it just seems to long compared to the other problems.
3x-2y=9
-3 -3
x-2y=3
-x+x-2y=3+x
-2y=3+x
----------
+2 +2
y =6+x
3x+y=6
3x+(6+x)=6
4x+6 =6
4x+6-6=6-6
4x = 0
Now it does not come out the way I had on paper. I did something wrong. Please help.
Thank you. 1 solutions
Answer 270301 by mananth(12270) on 2010-12-05 02:15:16 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!3x-2y=9...............1
-6x+4y=1..............2
..
you will see that 6x is a multiple of 3x. 3x*2=6x
so you can eliminate x by multiplying (1) 2 and add it to (2)
3x*2-2*2y=2*9
6x-4y=18.
add this to (2)
-6x+6x-4y+4y=18+1
0= 19
..
The system has no solution. As you will see from the grah below. The lines are parallel.

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/380528: The perimeter of a swimming pool is 91m. The width is 5m more than half the length of the pool. Find the length and width of the pool. 1 solutions
Answer 270108 by mananth(12270) on 2010-12-04 04:12:52 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!let length be x m
width = x/2 +5 m
...
Perimeter = 2(l+w)
2*(x+x/2+5)= 91
2x+x+10=91
3x+10=91
-10
3x=91-10
3x=81
/3
x=27 m ... the length
...
width = x/2 +5
=27/2 + 5
=13.5 +5
=18.5 m the width
...
CHECK
2*(18.5+27)=91

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/380529: An aluminum plate is made according to the following dimensions. The outer radius is 8 inches and the inner radius is 4 inches. (See diagram below) Use π = 3.14 as an approximate value. (a) How many square inches in area is the aluminum plate (the shaded region)? (b) If the cost to construct the plate is $6.50 per square inch, what is the construction cost? (Area = ∏ r2 ). 1 solutions
Answer 270107 by mananth(12270) on 2010-12-04 04:08:28 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!The area of shaded portion = area of larger circle - area of smaller circle.
larger circle
radius = 8 "
Area = pi*8*8
area = 64 pi
...
Area of inner circle = pi*4*4
area = 16pi
..
difference = 64pi-16pi
=48pi
=48*3.14
=150.72 in^2 is the shaded area
..
1 in^2 = $6.50
150.72in^2= 150.72*6.50
=$ 979.68 is the cost

I am having trouble getting a LCD. I know that distance is 1100, but I dont know how to make it come out right 1 solutions
Answer 270094 by mananth(12270) on 2010-12-04 01:30:52 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!d/550 + (2900-d)/600 = 5
multiply by 50
50d/550 + (2900-d)*50/600 = 5*50
..
d/11 +(2990-d)/12= 250
...
LCD = 132
(12d+11(2900-d))/132=250
12d+31900-11d=132*250
d=132*250-31900
d= 1,100

You can put this solution on YOUR website!Tim and Mary paddled a canoe 6 miles upstream in 4 hours.The trip back took 3hours.Find the rate at which they paddled in still water??
...
distance = 6 miles
time upstream = 4 hours
..
speed upstream = 6/4 = 3/2 mph= 1.5 mph
...
speed downstream = 6/3 = 2 mph
...
(3/2+2)/2
(7/2) /2
7/2 *1/2
= 7/4
=1.75 mph speed in still water
0.25 mph = speed of current.

Rational-functions/380493: find the equation of the line satisfying the given conditions , giving it in slope intercept form if possible
Through(9,5) , Parallel to -7x + 6y = -57
Im confused , please help 1 solutions
Answer 270076 by mananth(12270) on 2010-12-04 00:08:23 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Through(9,5) ,
Parallel to -7x + 6y = -57
write the equation in slope intercept form
+7x
6y=7x-57
/6
y=(7/6)x-(57/6)
..
slope = 7/6
..
the slope of line parallel to this line will be the same.
so m= 7/6
Point(9,5)
Find b in y = mx+b
5=7/6 *9 +b
5=21/2+b
b=5-21/2
b=-11/2
...
the equation will be
y=(7/6)x-11/2
...
Check with graph

Human-and-algebraic-language/380382: * Sammy can complete a programming job in 8 hours if he works alone.
* Marilyn can complete the same programming job in 12 hours if she works alone.
If Sammy and Marilyn work together, how many hours and minutes will they complete the job? 1 solutions
Answer 270075 by mananth(12270) on 2010-12-03 23:58:47 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Sammy can complete a programming job in 8 hours if he works alone.
So he does 1/8 of the job in 1 hour
..
Marilyn can complete the same programming job in 12 hours if she works alone
Marilyn can do 1/12 of the job in 1 hour.
...
Together they can do 1/8 +1/2 of the job in 1 hour
=(3+2)/24
=5/24 of the job in 1 hour
..
so they will take 24/5 hours to do the job
=4.8 hours
=4hours +0.8*60minutes
=4hours +48 minutes

let quarters be x
dimes = x+2
