against the wind went 1500 miles in 5 hours and returned with the wind in 3 hours.Assume the wind rate didnt change,find the rate of the airplane and the wind. 1 solutions
Answer 452422 by mananth(12270) on 2013-04-26 23:14:18 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Plane speed =x mph
wind speed =y mph
against wind 5 hours
with wind 3 hours
Distance against 1500 miles distance with 1500 miles
t=d/r against wind -
1500 / ( x - y )= 5
5 ( x - y ) = 1500
5 x - 5 y = 1500 ....................1
1500 / ( x + y )= 3
3 ( x + y ) = 1500
3 x + 3 y = 1500 ...............2
Multiply (1) by 1
Multiply (2) by 1
we get
5 x + -5 y = 1500
3 x + 3 y = 1500
8 x = 3000
/ 8
x = 375.00 mph
plug value of x in (1) y
5 x -5 y = 1500
1875 -5 -1875 = 1500
-5 y = 1500
-5 y = -375 mph
y = 75.00
Plane speed 375.00 mph
wind speed 75.00 mph

Linear-systems/742350: For an event if you purchased 8 adult tickets and 6 children tickets for your party at a cost of 132 dollars.A friend purchased 10 adult tickets and 4 children tickets for 144 dollars.Find the price of the adult ticket and the price of the children ticket. 1 solutions
Answer 452420 by mananth(12270) on 2013-04-26 23:00:40 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!x= cost of adult ticket
y= cost of child ticket
8.00 x + 6.00 y = 132.00 .............1
Total value
10.00 x + 4.00 y = 144.00 .............2
Eliminate y
multiply (1)by -4.00
Multiply (2) by 6.00
-32.00 x -24.00 y = -528.00
60.00 x + 24.00 y = 864.00
Add the two equations
28.00 x = 336.00
/ 28.00
x = 12.00
plug value of x in (1)
8.00 x + 6.00 y = 132.00
96.00 + 6.00 y = 132.00
6.00 y = 132.00 -96.00
6.00 y = 36.00
y = 6.00
x= 12 cost of adult ticket $
y= 6 cost of child ticket $

Numbers_Word_Problems/742320: There are three consecutive integers. If the square of the last plus the product of the other two is 137, find the sum of the integers. If the numbers were three rational number, how would this affect the result? 1 solutions
Answer 452409 by mananth(12270) on 2013-04-26 20:31:38 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!let the integers be (a-1),a, a+1
a(a-1)+(a+1)^2=137
a^2-a+a^2+2a+1=137
2a^2+a-136=0
2a^2+17a-16a-136=0
2a(a+8.5)-16(a+8.5)=0
(2a-16)(a+8.5)=0
2a=16 a=8
7,8,9
24 is the sum
OR a=-8.5
not an integer so ignore

Answer 452301 by mananth(12270) on 2013-04-26 11:16:37 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!log(x+2)+log(x-1)=1
log((x+2)(x-1))=1
(x+2)(x-1)=10^1
x^2+x-2=10
x^2+x-12=0
(x+4)(x-3)=0
x=3 ignore negative
b) log(3x+2)+log(x-1) = 2

Rational-functions/742105: The speed of a boat in still water is 8 km/h. It travels 60 km upstream and 60 km downstream in a total time of 16 hours. What is the speed of the stream? 1 solutions
Answer 452280 by mananth(12270) on 2013-04-26 08:31:19 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!speed of stream =x
speed of boat in still water =8
time down stream = 60/(8+x)
time down stream = 60/(8-x)
time up + time down = 16 hours
Multiply equation by (8-x)(8+x)
x^2=4
x= +/- 2
ignore negative
x=2

Finance/742026: your summer job pays $8 per hour. you get $12 per hour for overtime(anything over 40 hours per week). How many hours must you work in one week to earn $404? 1 solutions
Answer 452247 by mananth(12270) on 2013-04-25 21:44:23 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!no of extra hours be x
earning from extra hours = 12x
40 hours /week
8*40 = 320 /week
normal wages + overtime wages = 404
404=320+12x
404-320=12x
84=12x
7 hours extra
so total hours = 40 +7

Linear-systems/741985: I need help writing the equations for this word problem. Two airplanes flying in opposite directions from the same airport. The second plane flies 50 mph faster than the first plane, but it starts one-half hour later. Two hours after the first plane started, the planes are 1825 miles apart. How fast is each plane flying?
Do I need to use d=rt?
is one of the equations x + y =1825?
Appreciate any help. 1 solutions

The second plane flies 50 mph faster than the first plane, but it starts one-half hour later. Two hours after the first plane started, the planes are 1825 miles apart. How fast is each plane flying?
first plane x mph
Plane II x+50 mph starts 1.5 hours later.
during this period the plane I has traveled 1.5x miles
Add up their speeds
=> x+x+50=>2x+50 mph. ( traveling in opposite direction)
distance = r*t
Total distance = distance plane I flying alone + distance both flying
1825=1.5x +0.5(2x+50)
1825=1.5x +x+25
1825-25=2.5x
1800=2.5x
x=720
plane I speed = 720 mph

(5x)/(3)-(y)/(2)= 4? 1 solutions
Answer 452108 by mananth(12270) on 2013-04-25 08:20:49 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
LCM of the denominator is 6
multiply equation by 6
4x-21y=-30.................................(1)

same way multiply eqation by 6
10x-3y=24...............................(2)
solve for x & y
Eliminate y
multiply (1)by 1.00
Multiply (2) by -7.00
4.00 x -21.00 y = -30.00
-70.00 x + 21.00 y = -168.00
Add the two equations
-66.00 x = -198.00
/ -66.00
x = 3.00
plug value of x in (1)
4.00 x -21.00 y = -30.00
12.00 -21.00 y = -30.00
-21.00 y = -30.00 -12.00
-21.00 y = -42.00
y = 2.00

multiply equation by x(x+5)
210(x+5)-210x=x(x+5)
210x+1050-210x=x^2+5x
x^2+5x-1050=0
x^2+35x-30x-1050=0
x(x+35)-30(x+35)=0
(x-30)(x+35)=0
x= 30 OR -35

You can put this solution on YOUR website!multiples of 3
3,6,9,.........
n=100
a=3
d=3
sn=n/2[2a+(n-1)d)]
=>100/2[6+99*3]
=>50*303
=> 15150
---
even integers
a=2
d=2
n=100
Sn=n/2[2a+(n-1)d]
=50[4+99*2]
=50(202)
=10100

Travel_Word_Problems/741222: A motorist travelled from town x to Town Y. After travelling for 1.5hour, he passed a cyclist travelling at an average spped of 45 km/h in the opposite direction. when the motorist reached town y two hours later, the cyclist was 30 km away from Town X.
a) Find the average speed of the motorist
b) Find the distance between town x and town y. 1 solutions

You can put this solution on YOUR website!from the meeting point motorist took 2 hours to reach Y.
In two hours cyclist would have gone 90 km
he was 30 km from X
So total distance of 90+30 =120 km the motorist took 1.5 hours
r=d/t
120/1.5 = 80 km/h motorist speed.
Total time by motorist = 3.5 hours
distance between X & Y = 80 *3.5 =280 km
