$2000, part at 8% and part at 6%. He earned $144
from his investments. How much did he invest at 8% 1 solutions
Answer 326129 by mananth(12270) on 2011-07-28 20:36:10 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Investment I 8.00% per annum
Investment II 6.00% per annum
x+y=2000 ------------------------1
8.00% x + 6.00% y = $144.00
Multiply by 100
8x+6y= $14,400.00 --------2
Multiply (1) by -8
we get
-8x-8y= -16000.00
Add this to (2)
-2y=-$1,600.00
divide by -2
y=$800.00 investment at 6.00%
Balance $1,200.00 investment at 8.00%

Graphs/475339: Line/ goes through the point (5,2) and is perpendicular to the line through(-2,1) and (-4,-2). Find the equation (in slope form) for/. 1 solutions
Answer 325982 by mananth(12270) on 2011-07-28 09:03:28 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!slope of line passing through (-2,1) & (-4,-2)
x1 y1 x2 y2
-2 1 -4 -2
slope m = (y2-y1)/(x2-x1)
( -2 - 1 )/( -4 - -2 )
( -3 / -2 )
m= 1.50 OR 3/2
The line perpendicular to this line will have a slope of -2/3
Equation of line with slope -2/3 and passing through (5,2)
Find the intercept b
Plug value of the slope -2/3 and point (5,2) in
Y = m x + b
2.00 = -3.75 + b
b= 2 +3.75
b= 5.75
So the equation will be
Y = -0.75 x + 5.75

Travel_Word_Problems/475255: amadeus could travel 760 miles in twice the time it took his nemesis Saleri to travel 220 miles. If amadeus's rate exceeded that of Salieri by 40 miles per hour, find the rates and times of both men. 1 solutions
Answer 325958 by mananth(12270) on 2011-07-28 05:22:43 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Saleri x 220 miles
Amadeus x 40 760 miles
t=d/r
2*(220 / x) = 760 / ( x + 40 )
Cross multiply
440 ( x + 40 ) = 760 * x
440 x + 17600 = 760 x
760 x -440 x = 17600
320 x = 17600
/ 320
x = 55 Saleri mph
95 Amadeus mph

Travel_Word_Problems/475299: after running for a while at 8mph, Ludwig slowed to a walk at 4mph. If he traveled 68 miles in 12 hours, how far did he run and how far did he walk? 1 solutions
Answer 325907 by mananth(12270) on 2011-07-28 01:12:59 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!total distance = 68
running distance =x
running speed = 8 mph
walking distance = 68-x
walking speed = 4 mph
time running + time walking = 12
t=d/r
x/8 + (68-x)/4= 12
LCD = 8 multiply by 8
x+2(68-x)=8*12
x+136-2x=96
-x=96-136
-x=-40
x=40
distance run = 40 miles
Balance he walked

Travel_Word_Problems/475279: A certain river has a current of 3 miles per hour. A boat takes twice as long to travel upstream between two points as it does to travel downstream between the same two points. What is the speed of the boat in still water?
a. 3 miles per hour
b. 6 miles per hour
c. 9 miles per hour
d. 12 miles per hour
e. The speed can't be determined from the given information.
HELP ME PLS.......... :) & explain it pls.. :)
Thanks. 1 solutions
Answer 325902 by mananth(12270) on 2011-07-28 00:58:10 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!boat speed = x mph
current = 3 mph
against current speed = x-3
with current speed = x+3
let y be the distance .
downstream t= y/(x+3)............1
upstream 2t = y/(x-3)............2
multiply (1) by 2
2t=2y/(x+3)
Therefore y/(x-3)=2y/(x+3)
1/(x-3)=2/(x+3)
2(x-3)=x+3
2x-6=x+3
2x-x=6+3
x=9 mph speed of boat

Linear-systems/474992: Use the substitution method to solve the system of equations. Enter your answer as an ordered pair.
y = 5x - 17
y = x + 3 1 solutions
Answer 325727 by mananth(12270) on 2011-07-27 11:48:22 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!-5 x + y = -17 .............1
1 y = 3 + x ---------2
y = 3 + x
Substitute y in (1)
-5x+(3+x)=-17
-5x+3+x =-17
-5x+x=-17-3
-4x=-20
/-4
x= 5
Plug the value of x in (1)
-5 x + y = -17
-5 * 5 + y = -17
-25 + y = -17
y = 8
/ 1
y= 8
(5,8)

Linear-equations/474949: Hi, please help me with this:
When an airplane flies with a given wind, it can travel 3,000 kilometer in 5 hours. When the same airplane flies in the opposite directions against the wind, it takes 10 hours to fly the same distance. Find the speed of the plane in still air and the speed of the wind.
Hint: let x = be the speed of the wind still air y = the speed of the wind 1 solutions
Answer 325701 by mananth(12270) on 2011-07-27 09:29:33 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Distance = same= 3000
plane speed =x
wind speed =y
t=d/r
3000 / ( x - y )= 10.00
10 ( x - y ) = 3,000.00
10 x -10 y = 3000 ....................1
3000 / ( x + y )= 5.00
5.00 ( x + y ) = 3000
5.00 x + 5.00 y = 3000 ...............2
Multiply (1) by 1.00
Multiply (2) by 2.00
we get
10 x + -10 y = 3000
10 x + 10 y = 6000
20 x = 9000
/ 20
x = 450 mph plane speed
plug value of x in (1)
10 x -10 y = 3000
4500 -10 y = 3000
-10 y = 3000 -4500
-10 y = -1500
y = 150 mph wind speed
