Geometry_Word_Problems/548969: a picture frame measures 24cm by 15 cm.There is 220 cm squared of picture showing.The frame is of uniform thickness.Find the thickness.
1 solutions

Answer 357362 by mananth(12270) About Me  on 2011-12-19 09:31:45 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Area of picture frame =24*15 = 360 m^2
let the uniform width be x on length & width on each side
width of picture = 15-2x
length of picture = 24-2x
(15-2x)(24-2x)=220
360-30x-48x+4x^2=220
360-220-78x+4x^2=0
4x^2-78x+140=0
/2
2(2x^2-39x+70)=0
2(2x^2-35x-4x+70)=0
2(2x(x-17.5)-2(2x-35))=0
2((x-17.5)(x-2))=0
Neglect 17.5 since it is greater than width
so width = 2feet

Light travels at 300000 meters /s
that is written as 3*10^5 m/s
Distance between earth & Moon
assume 384000 km
3.84 * 10^5 km
The decimal point is put after one digit

Travel_Word_Problems/548800: Miguel walks 4 miles in 75 minutes. His rate for the first part of his walk is shown in the table below. The table below shows Time: 30 min Rate: 3 1/2 mph
1 solutions

Answer 357355 by mananth(12270) About Me  on 2011-12-19 09:13:56 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
time = 1/2 hour
rate = 3 1/2 = 7/2 mph
d=r*t
1/2 * 7/2 is the distance in the first part
=7/4 miles
4-7/4 is the balance walked in the second part
9/4 miles in the second half = 45 minutes = 3/4
rate = d/t
rate = (9/4) / (3/4)
=9/4 * 4/3
=3 mph in the second part

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Fund A 6.30% per annum ---x
Fund B 8.80% per annum ---y

x+y=191610 ------------------------1
6.30%x+ 8.80%y= =$16,681.66
Multiply by100
6.3x+8.8y=$1,668,166.00 --------2

Multiply (1) by -6.3
we get

-6.3x-6.3y=-1207143.00

Add this to (2)

0x+2.5y=$461,023.00

divide by2.5

y = $184,409.20 investment at 8.80%
Balance $7,200.80 investment at 6.30%
CHECK
$7,200.80 --------- 6.30% ------- $453.65
$184,409.20 ------- 8.80% ------- $16,228.01
Total -------------- $16,681.66

This is a problem where pythagoras theorem has to be applied
at any given time the cars are travelling at right angles to each other
north bound has traveled x miles
west bound car traveled 2x-38miles
leg1^2+leg2^2=hypotenuse ^2
x^2+(2x-38)^2=95^2
x^2+4x^2-152x+1444=9025
5x^2-152x-7581=0
Find the roots of the equation by quadratic formula

a= 5 , b= -152 , c= -7581

b^2-4ac= 23104 + 151620
b^2-4ac= 174724 %09sqrt%28%09174724%09%29=%09418%09

x1=%28-b%2Bsqrt%28b%5E2-4ac%29%29%2F%282a%29
x1=( 152 + 418 )/ 10
x1= 57.00
x2=( 152 -418 ) / 10
x2= -26.60
Ignore negative value

57 miles north bound car
west bound car = 2*57-38=76 miles

2x=y+28
y+23=3x-12
2x=y+28
2x-y=28................(1)
y+23=3x-12
y-3x=-35................(2)
2 x -1 y = 28 .............1
-3 x + 1 y = -35 .............2
Eliminate y
multiply (1)by 1
Multiply (2) by 1
2 x -1 y = 28
-3 x + 1 y = -35
Add the two equations
-1 x = -7.00
/ -1
x = 7
plug value of x in (1)
2 x + -1 y = 28
14 + -1 y = 28
-1 y = 28 -14
-1 y = 14
y = -14
7 & 14 are the numbers

120/0.15=x
800=x
$800 dinner was served by the waiter.
