Linear-equations/550676: Write an equation of the line perpendicular to the line given by 2x +3y =7 and having the same y-intercept as the line given 5x+ 2y =10
1 solutions

Answer 359057 by mananth(12270) About Me  on 2011-12-28 20:31:20 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
2x +3y =7 and having the same

y-intercept of line
5x+ 2y =10
2y=-5x+10
y=(-5/2)x +5
plug x=0
y=5
y intercept (0,5)
2 x + 3 y = 7
Find the slope of this line

3 y = -2 x + 7
Divide by 3
y = -0.667 x + 2.33
Compare this equation with y=mx+b
slope m = -0.67

The slope of a line perpendicular to the above line will be the negative reciprocal 1.5
m1*m2=-1
The slope of the required line will be 3/2

m= 3/2 ,point ( 0 , 5 )
Find b by plugging the values of m & the point in
y=mx+b
5 = 0.00 + b
b= 5
m= 3/2
The required equation isy = 3/ 2x + 5

Linear-equations/550717: 10x + 5y = 52.5
30x – 7y = 80.5
1 solutions

Answer 359056 by mananth(12270) About Me  on 2011-12-28 20:24:46 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
10 x + 5 y = 52.5 .............1
30 x -7 y = 80.5 .............2
Eliminate y
multiply (1)by 7
Multiply (2) by 5
70 x 35 y = 367.5
150 x -35 y = 402.5
Add the two equations
220 x = 770
/ 220
x = 3.50
plug value of x in (1)
10 x + 5 y = 52.5
35 + 5 y = 52.5
5 y = 52.5 -35
5 y = 17.5
y = 3.50

Answer 359051 by mananth(12270) About Me  on 2011-12-28 20:04:12 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let cape cost x
spy glass , x+9
Hat = (2x+9-16)=2x-7
x+x+9+2x-7=20
4x+2=20
4x=18
x=4.5--------- cape
spy glass ---- 9+4.5 = 13.5
Hat = 2

Linear-equations/550755: 10x + 7y = -120.5

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let numbers be x & y x>y
x+y=44
x=3y-2
x-3y=-2
multiply first equation by 3
we get 3x+3y=132
add this to the second equation
4x=130
/4
x=32.5
y=11.5

1 solutions

Answer 359037 by mananth(12270) About Me  on 2011-12-28 19:29:12 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
4 x -3 y = 5
Find the slope of this line

-3 y = -4 x + 5
Divide by -3
y = 4/3 x -1.67
Compare this equation with y=mx+b
slope m = 4/3
m1*m2=-1
The slope of a line perpendicular to the above line will be the negative reciprocal -3/4

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let speed of current be x
speed of boat be y
y-x=14..........(1)
60/(y+x)= 36/(y-x)
60(y-x)=36(y+x)
/12
5(y-x)=3(y+x)
5y-5x=3y+3x
2y-8x=0
/2
y-4x=0..........(2)
multiply (1) by -4
-4y+4x=-56
add this equation to (2)
-3y=-56
y=18.66 mph
y-x=14
18.66-x=14
x=4.66 mph

Answer 358898 by mananth(12270) About Me  on 2011-12-28 07:25:20 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
speed = distance /time
distance =8.2 km= 8 2/10 = 8 1/5 = 41/5
time = 18 minutes = 18/60= 3/10 hours
speed = (41/5)/(3/10)
speed = 41/5 * 10/3
speed = 82/3
=27.33 km/h

Pythagoras theorem states that
The diagonal and the sides of the pool form a right triangle
Hypotenuse ^2= leg1^2+leg2^2

leg1 = 12.5 m
Leg2^2= 10.5 m

Diagonal ^2= 12.5 ^2 + 10.5 ^2
Diagonal ^2= 156.25 + 110.25
Diagonal ^2= 266.5
take the square root
Diagonal= 16.3 m
she swims 16.3 m

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Investment I 4.00% per annum
Investment II 7.00% per annum

x+y 6000 ------------------------1
4.00%x+7.00% y=$360.00
Multiply by 100
4x+7y=$36,000.00 --------2

Multiply (1) by -4
we get

-4x-4y= -24000.00

Add this to (2)

3y = $12,000.00

divide by 3

y = $4,000.00 investment at 7.00%
Balance $2,000.00 investment at 4.00%
CHECK
$2,000.00 $80.00
$4,000.00 $280.00
Total $360.00
