Expressions-with-variables/559955: 2x-y=16 and -x+2y=-8
1 solutions

Answer 363599 by mananth(12270) About Me  on 2012-01-20 08:33:18 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
2 x -1 y = 16 .............1
-1 x + 2 y = -8 .............2
Eliminate y
multiply (1)by 2
Multiply (2) by 1
4 x -2 y = 32
-1 x 2 y = -8
Add the two equations
3 x = 24
/ 3
x = 8
plug value of x in (1)
2 x + -1 y = 16
16 + -1 y = 16
-1 y = 16 -16
-1 y = 0
y = 0

Numbers_Word_Problems/559974: The Length of a rectangular room is 2 feet longer than twice the width. If the room's perimeter is 136 feet, what are the room's dimensions?
1 solutions

Answer 363597 by mananth(12270) About Me  on 2012-01-20 08:29:45 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Perimeter = 136
Length (2x+2)
Width =x ft

Perimeter = 2(2x+2)+x)
Perimeter = 2(2x+2 +x)
Perimeter =4x+4+2x
136=6x+4
136-=6x
136-4=6x
132=6x
x=22 ft Width
Length= 46

Pythagorean-theorem/559794: A forty foot ladder is set against the wall. the distance of the base of the ladder to the wall is equal to the height of the ladder. How high is the ladder on the wall?
If I was to use the theorem, my answer is 0. (40)^2-(40)^2=b^2 1600-1600=b^2
0=b^2.
On the drawing it shows a 90o angle between the ladder and the wall.

Answer 363523 by mananth(12270) About Me  on 2012-01-19 20:18:23 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let distance of foot of ladder be x
height will also be x
ladder length = 40
The ladder ,ground and the wall form a right triangle
ground distance = leg2
height at which ladder touches
Hypotenuse = ladder length
Pythagoras theorem states that

Hypotenuse ^2= leg1^2+leg2^2
40^2=x^2+x^2
1600=2x^2
1600/2= x^2
800=x^2
take the square root
x=28.285 feet

Linear-equations/559784: what equation is parallel to y=1/2x-5 that goes through the points (6,-8)
Please Help.

Answer 363518 by mananth(12270) About Me  on 2012-01-19 20:03:08 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
y = 0.5x-5

Compare this equation with y=mx+b
slope m = 1/ 2
The slope of a line parallel to the above line will be the same
The slope of the required line will be 1/ 2
m= 1/ 2 ,point (6,-8)
Find b by plugging the values of m & the point in
y=mx+b
-8 = 3 + b
b= -11
m= 1/2
Plug value of the slope and b in y = mx +b
The required equation isy = 1/2 x -11

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
you have 60% solution
you have to add 100% antifreeze to get 80% solution
so we find out how much antifreeze is required to raise ti 80%
This quantity is to be replaced
percent ---------------- quantity
Antifreeze 100 ----------------x quarts
solution 60 ----------------5-x quarts
Mixture 80.00% ---------------- 5

100x+60(5-x)=80*5

100x+300-60x=400
100x-60 x=400-300
40x= 100

distance riding = 15
and
distance walking = 6
time riding = 15/(x+6)
time walking = 6/x
both are same
6/x = 15/(x+6)
cross multiply
6(x+6)=15x
6x+36=15x
9x=36
/9
x=4
walking speed = 4km/h
riding speed = 6+4 = 10 km/h
