Substitute y in (1)

Plug the value of x in (1)
5x+3y=12
5*4.5+3y=12
22.5+3y =12
3y=-10.5
/3

Pythagorean-theorem/559794: A forty foot ladder is set against the wall. the distance of the base of the ladder to the wall is equal to the height of the ladder. How high is the ladder on the wall?
If I was to use the theorem, my answer is 0. (40)^2-(40)^2=b^2 1600-1600=b^2
0=b^2.
On the drawing it shows a 90o angle between the ladder and the wall.

ground distance = leg2
height at which ladder touches
Hypotenuse = ladder length
Pythagoras theorem states that
Hypotenuse ^2= leg1^2+leg2^2
40^2=x^2+x^2
1600=2x^2
1600/2= x^2
800=x^2
take the square root
x=28.285 feet

The slope of a line parallel to the above line will be the same
The slope of the required line will be 1/ 2
m= 1/ 2 ,point (6,-8)
Find b by plugging the values of m & the point in
y=mx+b
-8 = 3 + b
b= -11
m= 1/2
Plug value of the slope and b in y = mx +b
The required equation isy = 1/2 x -11
