Mixture_Word_Problems/311236: how much pure alcohol must be added to 15 oz of a 60% solution of rubbing alcohol to change it to a 70% solution?
1 solutions

Answer 222580 by mananth(12270) About Me  on 2010-06-04 01:12:10 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let quantity of 100% alcohol required be x oz
rubbing alcohol = 60% 15 oz
Mixture 70% alcohol quantity = (x+15) oz
add the concentrations of individual and equate it to total concentration
.
1x+0.6*15 =0.7(x+15)
x+9=0.7x +10.5
x-0.7x = 10.5-9
0.3x = 1.5
x=5 oz of pure alcohol

A group of students go out for lunch. If two have hamburgers and five have hot dogs, the bill will be $8.00. If five have hamburgers and two have hot dogs, the bill will be $9.50. What is the price of a hamburger?
Let hamburgers cost $x each
Let hot dogs cost $y each
2x+5y==8.00
5x+2y=9.50
.
5(2x+5y)-2(5x+2y)= 5*8 - 2*9.50
10x+25y-10x -4y = 40-19
21y=21
y=1
.
plug value of y in any equation
2x+5*1 =8
2x=3
x=1.5
Hamburger cost is $ 1.5

Linear-systems/311078: Trains A & B are traveling in the same direction on parallel tracks. Tran A is traveling 80 miles per hour and Train B is traveling 90 miles per hour. Train A passes a station at 12:00am. If Train B passes the same station 12:40am, at what time will Train B catch up to Train A? When will Train B catch up with Train A? What is the time and if am or pm? Please help. Thank you.

Answer 222540 by mananth(12270) About Me  on 2010-06-03 20:45:38 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Train A speed = 80 mph
Train B 90 mph
Train A is ahead of train B at the station by 40 minutes.( 2/3 hours)
By the time train B reaches the station train A has traveled 80 * 2/3 miles
=160/3 miles to a point say P.
Let the distance from point P to the point where train B overtakes train A be x
.
Train B travels 160/3 + x miles in the same time the train A travels x miles
time taken by train A = x/80 hours
time taken by train B = x+160/3 / 90
.
x/80 = 3x+160 / 3 divided by 90
x/80 = 3x+160 /3 * 1/90
x/80= 3x+ 160 / 270
270x = 80(3x+160)
270x=240x +12800
30x= 12800
x=426.66 miles
time taken by train A t travel x miles = 426.66/80
=5.33 hours.
This is the same time taken by train B to cross train A

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/310946: Can you please help me with this problem? I'm confused. A square light switch plate is made which measures 4 inches on each side. A square hole measuring 1 inch on each side is left in the center. If the cost to construct the plate is 2.75 per square inch, what is the construction cost? (use A=s^2)
1 solutions

Answer 222391 by mananth(12270) About Me  on 2010-06-03 09:40:49 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The area of the switch plate = area of square plate - the area of the square hole.
Area of sq. plate = 4*4 = 16 sq. inches
..
Area of square hole = 1*1=1 sq. in
Area of plate = 16-1= 15 sq. in
1 sq. inch cost $2.75
15 sq. in costs 2.75 * 15 =41.25

.
one recipe covers 55 sq in
351.85 sqin will require 351.85/55
= 6.39
= 7 batches

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let her invest $ x in Mutual funds
& $y in GIC
x+y= 4800
.
Interest on mutual fund = 9%
Interest accrued = 0.09x
.
Interest on GIC is 10%
Interest accrued = 0.1y
.
0.09x=0.1y -43
0.09x -0.1y =-43 ( multiply by 100)
.
9x -10y=-4300
10x+10y+9x-10y = 48000-4300
19x=43700
x= $2300 the amount she invested in Mutual fund.
y=$2500 in GIC

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/310467: The speed of the current in the Yankaton River is 3 kilometers per hour. If a boat travels 18 kilometers downstream in this river and then returns to its starting point all in 4 1/2 hours, what is the rate of the boat in still water?
1 solutions

Answer 221973 by mananth(12270) About Me  on 2010-06-01 19:31:19 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the speed of the boat in still water be x km/hr.
Downstream
the speed will be x+3 km/hr.
Distance traveled is 18 km.
So time taken = 18/x+3
--
Upstream
the speed of the boat is x-3 mph.
Distance is 18km.
Time 18 / x-3
.
Add up the two .
18/x+3 + 18/x-3 = 9/2 hours
18(x-3)+18(x+3)= 9/2(x^2-9)
18x-54+1854 = 9x^2-81 / 2
2(36x)= 9x^2-81
72x=9x^2-81
9x^2-72x-81=0 ( divide by 9)
x^2-8x-9=0
x^2-9x+x-9=0
x(x-9)+1(x-9)=0
(x+1)(x-9)=0
x= -1 Or x=9
Speed cannot be negative
so boat speed in still water = 9 km/hr

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/310469: Two pumps operating together can fill a cistern in 4 hours. If one of the pumps working alone can fill the cistern in 6 hours, how long would it take the other pump working alone?
1 solutions

Answer 221967 by mananth(12270) About Me  on 2010-06-01 19:11:16 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let filling the cistern be = 1 job.
Both pumps can do the job in 4 hours.
So they can do 1/4 of the job in 1 hour.
.
one pump does the job in 6 hours .
So it does 1/6th. of the job in 1 hour.
.
Job done by both - job done by one of them = job done by the other in 1 hour.
.
1/4 - 1/6
=3-2 / 12
=1/12.
The other pump does 1/12th job in 1 hour.
.
So it takes 12 hours to do the complete job of filing the cistern alone.
