You can put this solution on YOUR website!A picture frame has a length l = 13 inches and the height of h= 11 inches. If the frame width is x inches, write and expression for the display area of the frame.
L=13
h=11
..
x is the width on both sides
so you have to subtract x+x to get the length and breadth of the display area
..
display area length will be 13-2x
display area height = 11-2x
..
Area of display area = (13-2x)(11-2x)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!A plane flies 400 miles with the wind and 300 miles against the wind in the same length of time. If the speed of the wind is 22 mph, what is the speed of the plane in still air?
let speed in still air be xmph
..
speed with wind will be x+22 mph it goes 400 miles
speed against wind will be x-22 . it goes 300 miles.
time taken is the same
..
400/ x+22 = 300/ x-22
400*(x-22)=300(x+22)
400x-8800=300x-6600
100x=15000
x=150 mph the speed of plane in still air

Percentage-and-ratio-word-problems/322872: Gene purchased a condo for 90,000. He made a 15% down payment and assumed a 9% morgage for 20 years. Find the monthly payment and the finance charge 1 solutions
Answer 231161 by mananth(12270) on 2010-07-16 06:55:54 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Condo price $ 90,000
15% down payment = 13500
Balance to be paid = 90000-14500=75500
The formula for monthly payment
C=Po[r(1+r)^n / (1+r)^n-1]
Po=76500
r=9% ( 0.09/12)=0.0075
n=20 years = 240 months
..
(1+r)^n= (1+0.0075)^240=6.009
..
r(1+r)^n=0.0075*6.009=0.0450
..
(1+r)^n-1= 6.009-1= 5.009
..

Rate-of-work-word-problems/322915: A company's new printer can print checks three times faster than its old printer.
with both printers operating ,the checks can be printed in 6 minutes. how long would it take to print the checks with the new printer only ? 1 solutions
Answer 231160 by mananth(12270) on 2010-07-16 06:08:29 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!let the old printer's speed be x checks
1/x of the check it does it 1 minute
..
new printer will print at 3x checks
1/3x checks it prints in 1 minute
..
both print in 6 minutes
So 1/6 of the job they do in 1 minute
..
1/x + 1/3x = 1/6
3+1 /3x= 1/6
6*4=3x
3x=24
x= 8 checks by the old printer

He flies out directly into the wind and returns with the wind behind him. FInd his speed in still air. 1 solutions
Answer 231159 by mananth(12270) on 2010-07-16 05:15:22 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!The speed of a sparrow is x mph in still air.
When the wind is blowing at 1 mph,
speed will be x-1 mph against the wind
time taken 12 hours
..
Distance traveled both ways is the same
Distance = rate*time
12*(x-1) = 12
with wind
5*(x+1)=12
..
12(x-1)=5*(x+1)
12x-12=5x+5
12x-5x=12+5
7x=17
x= 17/7 mph in still air
the sparrow takes 5 hours to fly 12 miles to its nest and 12 hours to return again. He flies out directly into the wind and returns with the wind behind him. FInd his speed in still air.

Travel_Word_Problems/322911: A man is going 1 hr late to his home one day wen he goes in 80 km speed..
he daily goes in 100 km speed..
Find the distance 1 solutions
Answer 231154 by mananth(12270) on 2010-07-16 04:35:45 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!let the house distance be x km
time = distance /rate
daily time taken = x/100
on this day time taken = x/80
The difference in time = 1 hour
..
x/80-x/100=1
100x-80x / 8000 =1
20x/8000=1
multiply by 8000 on both sides
20x= 8000
x=400 km

You can put this solution on YOUR website!let the numbers be x , x+1 & x+2
Sum of the numbers = 144
x+(x+1)+(x+2)=144
3x+3=44
add -3
3x+3-3 = 44-3
3x=41
x is a variable, 3 is the co-efficient and the numbers are constant

You can put this solution on YOUR website!The sum of twice a first number and five times a second number is 111.
let one number be x: other number be y
2x+5y=111................ equation 1
..
the second number is subtracted from five times the first number the result is 21.
5x-y=21................... equation 2
multiply equation 2 by 5 and it to equation 1 to eliminate y
25x-5y=105
..
25x-5y+2x+5y=105+111
27x=216
x=8
..
plug the value of x in equation 2
40-y=21
-y=-19
y=19
..
The numbers are 8 & 19

Volume/322619: An aluminum can has a volume of 250 gallons. What is its volume in cubic feet?
I believe I correctly answered this as 250gallons *.1337ft cubed = 33.425
so the volume is 33.425 ftcubed.
Next I need to use that volume (33.425ft cubed) to express the height(h) in terms of the radius (x)
I believe the formula would be h=v/pix^2 so
h=33.425ft^3/3.14x^2 I am not sure how to solve this or what is meant by express h in terms of x
Thank you so much for your help
