The question is
3x-2/5=4x+1/3 I don't want to know the answer I just want to know how to do it
**
The first step is to get rid of the fractions.
Find the LCD (lowest common denominator), in this case=15 (from the 5 and 3)
multiply each term by the LCD
3x-2/5=4x+1/3
45x-6=60x+5
45x-60x=5+6
-15x=11
x=-11/15

ind the equation of the line that is parallel to 5x+2y=-1 and contains the point (-4,-2)
**
5x+2y=-1
rewrite in standard form for a straight line
2y=-5x-1
y=-5x/2-1/2
slope=-5/2
..
Slope of line parallel to given line=-5/2
Equation: y=-5x/2+b
solving for b using given point (-4,-2)
-2=(-5*-4)/2+b
-2=10+b
b=-12
Equation of parallel line:
y=-5x/2-12

Use the coordinates (1997, 1.26) and (2006, 2.31) to find the slope, or rate of change, between the two points. Describe how you arrived at your answer.
**
Slope is defined as the change in y (dependent variable)/change in x (independent variable)
For given ordered pairs, the first number is x, and the second y.
slope=∆y/∆x=(2.31-1.26)/(2006-1997)=1.05/9

i have a question that says "Given the lengths of the three sides, tell whether each of these are right triangles or not"
a)8,15,17

**
Remember the Pythagorean Theorem?
The square root of the sum of the squares of the two legs(short sides)=hypotenuse(long side)
a) 8^2+15^2=289
√289=17
Therefore, these are dimensions of a right triangle
..
b) 9^2+10^2=181
√181≠15
Therefore, this is not a right triangle

and a 40% sugar solution. How much of the 70%
sugar solution must he use?
**
let x=gal of 70% solution Perry must use
10-x=gal of 40% solution Perry must use
..
70%x+40%(10-x)=58%(10)
.7x+.4-.4x=5.8
.3x=5.4
x=18
ans:
gallons of 70% solution Perry must use=18

What is the domain of y=x^3-4
If you do not see any denominators or square roots in the expression, there are no restrictions and the domain is: all real numbers or (-∞,∞)

**
3hrs and 35 min=215 min
6 1/2 hrs=390 min
let x=minutes pipe B can fill the pool alone
..
sum of individual work rates=work rate working together
1/390+1/x=1/215
1/x=1/215-1/390
1/x=(390-215)/215*390=
1/x=175/83850
x≈479 min

How do you find the smallest power of 0.917 that yields a value less than 0.10. The answer book says 27 (rounded up). How did they get that.
**
.917^x<0.10
Take log of both sides
xlog(.917) divide both sides by log(.917) and reverse inequality signs (note: both logs<0)
x>log(0.10)/log(.917)
Using calculator
x>26.574..
The smallest power of 0.917 that yields a value less than 0.10≈27

Percentage-and-ratio-word-problems/571116: The resistance (in ohms) of a circular conductor varies directly with the length of the conductor and inversely with the square of the radius of the conduction. let x=minutes required by Susan and Stan working together to deliver the newspapers
Susan's work rate=108/90
Stan's work rate=108/120
working together Susan and Stan can deliver 108 newspapers in x minutes
108x/90+108x/120=108
LCD: 90*120
120*108x+90*108x=90*120*108
120x+90x=90*120

Solve the system of equations
y^2-3x^2=6
y=2x-1
**
substitute (2x-1) for y in first equation
y^2-3x^2=6
(2x-1)^2-3x^2=6
4x^2-4x+1-3x^2=6
x^2-4x-5=0
(x-5)(x+1)=0
x=5
or
x=-1

A diameter is the segment from (-6,-4) to (3,5) ... Find the equation of the circle.
**
Standard form of equation for a circle: (x-h)^2+(y-k)^2=r^2, (h,k)=(x,y) coordinates of center, r=radius
Finding mid points of x and y coordinates of given line segment end points:
x=(3-6)/2=-3/2=-1.5
y=(5-4)/2=12=.5
center of circle: (-1.5,0.5)
..
Finding diameter of circle using distance formula:
d^2=(3+6)^2+(5+4)^2=9^2+9^2=81+81=162
d=√162
radius=d/2=√162/2≈6.36
radius^2=40.5
Equation of circle:
(x+1.5)^2+(y-0.5)^2=40.5
