L = 2W + 3
P = 48
P = 2(W + L)
48 = 2(w + 2W + 3)
48 = 2(3W + 3)
48 = 2 * 3(W + 1)
48 = 6(W + 1)
8 = W + 1
7 = W

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/204744: The product of two consecutive even integers is 224. Find the integers.
Ok so I think it's something like this.
x = a number
x+2 = another number
x(x+2) = 224
x^2+2x-224=0
And then you factor that? I have no clue.

Answer 154521 by lazi(15) About Me  on 2009-07-29 13:26:21 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x^2 + 2x - 224 = 0
224 = 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 7 = 16 * 14
(x + 16)(x - 14) = 0

Quadratic_Equations/204724: solve by using quadratic formula (((6x2+3x-18=0)))
my answer is x=-2 3/2

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
from where the truck start to the airport is 1 hour
when the truck drives half way the taxi start leaving from the airport at 50mph
ok the truck drives half way he has half an hour left to get to the airport. therefore the taxi driver only drives for 1/2 hour when the truck arrives at the airport.
50mph * 1/2 hour of driving = 25 mi away from the airport

expressions/204648: remove paraentheses and simplify the expression:

Answer 154442 by lazi(15) About Me  on 2009-07-28 19:54:20 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
sqrt 3 = (3)^(1/2)
(3)^(1/2) * (3)^(1/2) + 2(3)^(1/2)
x^(2) * x^(2) = x^(2+2) = x^(4)
(3)^(2/2) + 2(3)^(1/2)
3 + 2(3)^(1/2) = 3 + 2(sqrt3)

Age_Word_Problems/204654: ANN'SAGE IS 7/10TH OF BILL'S AGE. IN 4 YEARS ANN'S AGE WILL BE 8/11THS OF BILL'S AGE. HOW OLD IS BILL?
1 solutions

Answer 154440 by lazi(15) About Me  on 2009-07-28 19:48:20 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a=Ann's age
b= Bill's age
a= (7/10)b = (7b)/10
in four years means
a + 4 = (8/11)(b+4)
now we know what a is in terms of b, we just plug it into the formula above
(7b)/10 + 4 = (8b)/11 + 32/11
solve for b
(7b)/10 + 4 = (8b)/11 + 32/11
-(7b)/10 on both side
-32/11 on both side
_____________________________
12/11 = (3/110)b
times 110/3 on both side
_________________
40 = b
Bill's age is 40.

Graphs/204652: x² + 5x + 4

x² - 9

Multiply and express the product in simplest form.
1 solutions

Answer 154436 by lazi(15) About Me  on 2009-07-28 19:31:04 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x^2 + 5x + 4 = (x+1)(x+4)
x^2 - 9 = (x-3)(x+3)
{[(x+1)(x+4)]/(x+3)^2} divided by {(x+1)/[(x-3)(x+3)]}
1/4 divided by 1/8 = 1/4 multiply by 8/1
{[(x+1)(x+4)]/(x+3)^2} multiply by {[(x-3)(x+3)]/(x+1)}
[(x+1)(x+4)(x-3)(x+3)]/[(x+3)(x+3)(x+1)]
now it's just simply cross out the same one from top and bottom.
answer: [(x+4)(x-3)]/(x+3)

Triangles/204327: Given that the area of an equilateral triangle is 153 cm^2, find its perimeter
1 solutions

Answer 154270 by lazi(15) About Me  on 2009-07-26 23:07:06 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A = [(a^2)/4]sqrt(3)
153 = [(a^2)/4]sqrt(3)
153/sqrt(3) = (a^2)/4
4[153/sqrt(3)] = a^2
sqrt{4[153/sqrt(3)]}=a
Perimeter is just three sides adding together; and since all the sides are the same we can take one side times 3
3sqrt{4[153/sqrt(3)]} = P = 56.392 cm

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/204171: a2+2a-35 /12x devided by ax-3x/a2 + 4a -21

Answer 154130 by lazi(15) About Me  on 2009-07-25 11:20:26 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
i'm assuming that this is what you meant to type
(a^2 + 2a - 35)/(12x) divided by (ax - 3x)/(a^2 + 4a - 21)

a^2 + 2a - 35 = (a + 7)(a - 5)
ax - 3x = x(a - 3)
a^2 + 4a - 21 = (a + 7)(a - 3)
when you have a fraction and you try to divide it to another fraction you actually multiplying its reciprical (ie 1/2 divide by 1/4 = 1/2 multiply by 4/1)
disregard the dots.
[(a+7)(a-5)]....[(a+7)(a-3)]....(a+7)^2 (a-5)
------------ x ------------ = -------------
(12x).....................x(a-3)................12x^2

Permutations/204168: Sorry if this is the wrong place for this question.
If there are 2 apples and every year the percentage of apples increase by 2%. How many apples are there in 6000 years?
1 solutions

Answer 154128 by lazi(15) About Me  on 2009-07-25 10:15:35 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
starting out with 2 apples
every year the amount of apples increase by 2%
how many apples are there in 6000 years
2+1[2(.02)]=2.04
2+2[2(.02)]=2.08
and so on to 6000 years
2+6000[2(.02)]=242
the beginning 2 is your starting out amount.
6000 is your years, and 2(.02) is the amount increase per year.
another way of saying this is that in 6000 years the % increase is (2% * 6000) = 12000% = 12000/100
2+2*12000/100= 2+240=242

Square-cubic-other-roots/203898: 2 times the sq root of 90 + 3 times the sq root of 40 - 4 times the sq root of 10 = ??
1 solutions

Answer 153836 by lazi(15) About Me  on 2009-07-22 14:40:29 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x^(1/2) = square root of x
2(90)^(1/2) + 3(40)^(1/2) - 4(10)^(1/2) =
to add or subtract them we need to make sure they have the same square root; its like having the same terms. (i.e. 2(x) + 3(x) = 5(x)...)
like finding the common denominator we look for what number they have in common.
90 = 9 * 10
40 = 4 * 10
10 = 10
9 = 3^2
4 = 2^2
2(3^2 * 10)^(1/2) + 3(2^2 *10)^(1/2) - 4(10)^(1/2) =
[2 * 3 * (10)^(1/2)] + [3 * 2 * (10)^(1/2)] - [4 * (10)^(1/2)] =
6(10)^(1/2) + 6(10)^(1/2) - 4(10)^(1/2) =
now it's just simply adding and subtracting the number before (10)^(1/2)
6+6-4= 12-4=8
the answer is 8(10)^(1/2) ; 8 times the square root of 10

Percentage-and-ratio-word-problems/203894: This question is from textbook Mathematics for Elementary Teachers
A car cost $4485 after an 8% discount. What is the original price of the car?

1 solutions

Answer 153832 by lazi(15) About Me  on 2009-07-22 13:50:37 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
This is what we know:
$4485 = 92% of the original price (100% - 8%)
so find how much one percent is from what we know.
$4485/92 = $48.75
so now we know that 1% = $48.75
now to find the whole thing just take $48.75 * 100%= $4875
To check:
Before discount $4875
discount 8%
$4875*.08=$390
Total minus discount
$4875-$390=$4485
Formula let x be the total price before discount. 8%=.08
x - .08x = 4485
total$ - discount$ = remaining$
1x - .08x = 4485
combine like terms
.92x = 4485
solving for x we need to get it by itself. so divide by .92 on both side
.92x = 4485
x = 4485/.92
x = 4875
